Flames @ Coyotes
Sunday-
Flyers @ Rangers (NBC)
Red Wings @ Sabres

Team with most on the line:
Philadelphia Flyers
The Broad Street Bullies will visit their long-time rivals in New York this weekend, Isles on Saturday, Rangers on Sunday. Philly’s responded well from their disastrous 10-game losing streak with two wins, and the addition of Vaclav Prospal didn’t hurt. But the Flyers need to be wary of these two games this weekend. Both the Rangers and Islanders are in the same dogfight for the playoffs as the Flyers are in, and if they end up dropping both, they’ll go into their key home stretch with the City of Brotherly Love jumping down their throats again.

Trade Deadline Reaction

Here were today’s winners & losers…

WINNERS-

Colorado Avalanche:
A team sitting just four points back of Nashville for 8th in the West, Colorado was definitely winners at this year’s deadline. To what extent remains to be seen. You don’t know what kind of production you’ll get out of Peter Forsberg or Adam Foote. With that said, the organization and fan base has to be re-energized for the stretch run, and they basically gave up nothing for both of ‘em. Those two trades will probably be enough for the Avs to leapfrog the Preds, into the playoffs.
Dallas Stars:
The acquisition of Brad Richards is HUGE for the Stars. Richards’ numbers the past two years have suffered because he was playing with virtually no wingers in Tampa. Now, he’ll probably be on a line with Jere Lehtinen and Mike Modano. Richards also has a Conn Smythe under his belt. Giving up goalie Mike Smith and winger Jussi Jokinen was a bit of a risk, but Richards is signed for two more years, and they needed to make a deal solidify their Cup contention.
Pittsburgh Penguins:
Pens GM Ray Shero pulled the jaw-dropper today. All morning long Marian Hossa was supposed to go to either Montreal or Ottawa. Nothing happened, and there were the Penguins, offering Erik Christensen, Colby Armstrong, prospect Angelo Esposito and a first round pick in 2008. A steep price… yes. The wrong move… no! This will keep the Malone/Malkin/Sykora line together when Sid comes back. Crosby and Hossa potentially on the same line?? Watch out Eastern Conference.
San Jose Sharks:
It was clear that the Sharks needed to acquire a puck-moving defenseman today. And they got the best one available. Brian Campbell is just what the doctor ordered for the Sharks. He’s had great playoff experience the last two years, and is one of the most coveted defensemen in the league. Look for this to boost San Jose down the stretch.
Washington Capitals:
Boy, did they come out firing this morning? Cristobal Huet, Sergei Fedorov and Matt Cooke. These trades very well may shoot the Caps past Carolina for the Southeast Division. Fedorov can now be Ovechkin’s center for the rest of the year, along with Alexander Semin. What a line that could be. Yes, Fedorov is well past his time. But he’s being paired with fellow Russians, so that should be helpful. The Huet trade was a shocker, and they only had to give a 2nd rounder? Wow… what were the Habs thinking? Also, Cooke will help with grit on the 3rd line. Great moves by Washington.

LOSERS-
Montreal Canadiens:
Today was kind of odd from the Canadiens’ front. The only trade they made was trading away co-starting goalie Cristobal Huet. That now leaves 20-year old rookie Carey Price all by myself to carry Montreal through the playoffs. Also, the Habs were in line to make a big splash… only to not to be. Hossa was in their grasps, but GM Bob Gainey laid an egg and watched their competitors (Pittsburgh) trade for him. They also could’ve traded for Olli Jokinen. A mysterious day that will surely get Montreal fans buzzing for the wrong reason. I guess some good news is that the Sens were silent, too.
Ottawa Senators:
Man oh man, do they have problems? Ray Emery is a cancer in the locker room, and has been all year long. Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman aren’t fitting in well. The defense is wearing down. GM Bryan Murray will get a lot grief from fans and the media for not completing a big trade today. Martin Lapointe may help in the locker room a little bit, but enough to solve their problems.
Boston Bruins:
Alright, here’s a team who has little pure talent, to be honest. So, you’d expect Boston to at least go out and get an experienced forward to help them through the stretch run. The Bruins never pulled the trigger, and could be watching the Sabres and the Flyers in the playoffs from the comforts of their own homes.
Columbus Blue Jackets:
The Jackets are sitting just five points out of the playoffs, the closest they’ve ever been to making it. They came off big wins over Montreal and Ottawa last week. And they’re sellers? Wow! They failed in the Brad Richards sweepstakes, and traded away key veterans Adam Foote and Sergei Fedorov. Will they ever get it?
Los Angeles Kings:
Believe it or not, yes the Kings are losers. This was their opportunity to trade away veterans pieces to load up on draft picks. They only traded Brad Stuart, which got minimal return from Detroit. Ladislav Nagy, Rob Blake, Tom Preissing, Brian Willsie, and Scott Thornton could’ve all been dealt away for prospects or draft picks. Another franchise that’ll never get it until they clean house.

WOW!! Forsberg has found destination

Colorado certainly just received the jolt they needed for the playoffs...
PETER FORSBERG is back in maroon & navy.
Wow.. just, wow.. The Avalanche in the last 4 days have activated Stastny, Smyth, and Sakic off IR, and just signed the Foppa. I think Nashville, Phoenix, Vancouver, and Calgary need to counter with a move or moves of their own.

Also, three players have declared they don't want to be traded...
Mats Sundin, Bryan McCabe of Toronto & Alex Tanguay from Calgary.
That has really boosted the trade value of Olli Jokinen, Marian Hossa, and Brad Richards, among others.

The next 24 hours shall be VERY interesting!!

POWER RANKINGS (2/25 - 3/2)

In this week’s Power Rankings, I’ll state whether each team is a buyer, seller, or will stand pat before Tuesday’s Trade Deadline.

1. Stars

Last Week: 2-1-0
Dallas will probably stay with what they have. They’ve been by far the best team in the league in the month of February, and don’t necessarily NEED anything. But if the Ducks make a splash, look for the Stars to counter.
2. Ducks

Last Week: 3-0-0
Anaheim may not need to make a move, because they’ve been red-hot since Teemu’s return. But you can’t think of a Trade Deadline that Ducks GM Brian Burke hasn’t decided to make a move. The defending champs will look to make a move to leap the Stars.
3. Devils

Last Week: 4-0-0
Ditto Dallas for the Devils. New Jersey has been on fire of late, and don’t have any desire to acquire anyone by Tuesday. Lamoriello has never really been a big player at the Deadline.
4. Penguins

Last Week: 2-0-2
If the Pens know Sidney Crosby will comeback at full strength, they probably won’t be active in the next couple of days. But if they have doubts about Crosby’s health for the rest of the season, GM Ray Shero may feel the need to pick up someone.
5. Canadiens

Last Week: 1-2-0
Bob Gainey has a lot of pressure on him to make a splash on Tuesday. The Habs need to shake things up to get to the next level. Acquiring a player like Marian Hossa or Olli Jokinen is not out of the question.
6. Senators

Last Week: 2-0-1
I think Ottawa did what they wanted to do by trading for Stillman and Commodore. They may pick up a 3rd or 4th liner, but other than that, look for the Sens to stand pat with what they currently have.
7. Rangers

Last Week: 2-0-1
Rumors are swirling that the Blueshirts may be up to something. Could Jaromir Jagr be heading to Edmonton? Who knows, but one thing’s for sure… the Rangers will raise some eyebrows with the move(s) they make today or tomorrow.
8. Red Wings

Last Week: 1-2-0
Detroit’s been reeling in February, so look for GM Ken Holland to pick up a player or two. Brad Stuart from LA has been rumored to go to Detroit; so has Vaclav Prospal from Tampa. They’ll definitely make a move by 2 PM Tuesday.
9. Flames

Last Week: 4-0-0
This recent surge by Calgary has me believing they’ll be quiet come Tuesday. They’re hot and have a lot of chemistry, so don’t expect much from Mike Keenan & company.
10. Sharks

Last Week: 2-2-0
GM Doug Wilson needs to do something big for the Sharks. San Jose is the team that has most pressure to win in the playoffs this year. Trading away Captain Patrick Marleau has been constantly rumored since last summer, and they could trade him bring back productive pieces for a postseason run.
11. Canucks

Last Week: 3-0-0
Roberto Luongo and company had a great week, beating Minnesota, Nashville, and Detroit. But look for Vancouver to pick up a couple pieces to make a deep playoff run.
12. Wild

Last Week: 0-2-1
Minny’s mini-plunge may lead people to believe they’ll be heavy buyers on Tuesday. Wrong! The front office in St. Paul has always been conservative, and nothing will change this time around.
13. Sabres

Last Week: 2-1-0
Buffalo has been chugging along since the All-Star Break. They still need to make a trade, though, to solidify their playoff contention. Olli Jokinen may be the man.
14. Avalanche

Last Week: 1-2-1
The Avs’ struggles this week may make people think Colorado needs to make a big move. But with Smyth, Sakic, and Stastny all coming back recently, the Avalanche may stand pat.
15. Bruins

Last Week: 3-0-0
Boston GM Peter Chiarelli has to be a big buyer on Tuesday for Boston to make the playoffs. With the current roster they have, I can’t see the Bruins playing in mid-April. Is Hossa on his way to ‘Beantown’??
16. Hurricanes

Last Week: 2-0-1
With the Canes temporarily separating themselves from the rest of the pack in the Southeast, don’t look for Carolina to do much at the deadline. A veteran forward or d-man would be it.
17. Predators

Last Week: 1-1-1
GM David Poile is now under the gun to pick up a couple pieces. Injuries to forwards Martin Gelinas and Jed Ortmeyer may make Poile go out and get a couple forwards. Fedotenko and Prospal have been rumored.
18. Islanders

Last Week: 3-1-0
What a couple weeks the men from Long Island have put together. And now, GM Garth Snow will be a buyer Tuesday. But he could also be seller, looking to dump Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko.
19. Coyotes

Last Week: 2-1-1
If Phoenix wants to make a playoff push, GM Don Maloney will need to make a nice acquisition that will go under the radar. If they stand pat, the Yotes could crumble down the stretch.
20. Blue Jackets

Last Week: 2-1-0
The Jackets are as close as ever to making the playoffs, and absolutely will be buyers come Tuesday. They’ll look for a top six forward, or a good defenseman.
21. Blues

Last Week: 1-2-1
GM John Davidson will look to cut a deal that could put St. Louis over the top. The Blues are currently sitting six points out, and need to get things rolling pretty quickly.
22. Capitals

Last Week: 0-2-1
Ovechkin has gone into a dry spell and Washington has suffered. Acquiring a goalie should be the Caps’ number one priority (Emery, Roloson?)
23. Blackhawks

Last Week: 2-2-0
Chicago’s inching their way back into the hunt, and need to make a deal to continue their push.
24. Flyers

Last Week: 0-2-1
Wow, have the Flyers fallen off the map recently? GM Paul Holmgren may have to acquire a big name to turn things around in Philly.
25. Maple Leafs

Last Week: 2-1-0
Mats Sundin is staying, for now, but the Leafs can turn their sights to dumping the bigger salaries of McCabe, Kaberle, and Tucker. They’ll be big-time sellers.
26. Panthers

Last Week: 1-2-1
Florida’s looking like sellers, with Olli Jokinen on the trading block. They’ll need to find a suitor that’ll give a young d-man and goalie.
27. Thrashers

Last Week: 0-2-0
Atlanta’s kind of falling apart now, and will look to deal Hossa. Let the rebuilding for next year begin!
28. Oilers

Last Week: 1-2-0
Edmonton could dump some of their older players with a price tag, but it’s not likely. Kevin Lowe is gearing up for a huge season next year.
29. Kings

Last Week: 1-1-1
It’s a guarantee that LA will be sellers. Cammalleri and Blake are on the block.
30. Lightning

Last Week: 0-2-1
Tampa will be sellers, no doubt. Prospal, Boyle, Richards, and Gratton are all candidates to be dealt.

Saturday Thoughts

Here are some of my thoughts on what went down Saturday...
Atlantic Division
The Rangers & Devils picked up BIG wins... while the Pens & Flyers suffered frustrating losses.
Pittsburgh blew a 3-0 lead at home to Ottawa, then lost in OT.. It'll be interesting to see how they rebound tomorrow at home vs. the Sharks.
The Flyers had a shutout firmly in their grasps, but Florida scored with 3 seconds to go, and they ended up the victor in OT.
The Islanders' 6-game winning streak was snapped by Jersey.
Northeast Division
This division had a couple exciting games today.
Ottawa orchestrated a comeback in Pittsburgh, resulting in a 4-3 win in OT.
The Sabres made too many mistakes in an intense 4-3 loss vs. the Rangers. It was Chris Drury's first game back at HSBC.
The Canadiens were dominated by Pascal Leclaire at home in a 3-0 loss to the Jackets. They've now lost 2 straight home games since their miracle comeback vs. NYR.
Toronto & Boston each picked up key wins on Saturday, too.
Southeast Division
Carolina extended itself in a 6-3 win over Washington in the afternoon.
Florida came back in dramatic fashion to beat Philly, 2-1 in OT.
Atlanta & Tampa both lost close games... It now looks like the Lightning can start making vacation plans for mid-April.
Central Division
The Red Wings' fall continued in a 4-1 loss in Vancouver.. as long as Lidstrom & Hasek are out, Detroit will keep playing inconsistently.
The Blackhawks & Blue Jackets both notched key road wins on the day.
Nashville laid an egg at home to the Stars in a 6-3 loss. Key 6-game road trip for the Preds coming up...
Northwest Division
The Canucks won their 4th straight game with their win vs. the Wings... they've been looking like a formidable playoff team as of late. Vancouver's now one point behind Minnesota for the division lead.
The Oilers, Avs, Flames, and Wild were all idle.
Pacific Division
Dallas looked like the Cup favorite in their 6-3 win in the Music City. Defense has been dominant without Zubov & Boucher... imagine what it'll be when those two return.
The Kings made a ferocious comeback to earn a point in an OT loss to Chicago.
The Ducks, Sharks, and Coyotes were idle.

Team with most on the line:
Washington Capitals
The Capitals come into the weekend with a 2-2-2 record in their last six games. If winning the division is Washington’s only road to the playoffs, they better win Saturday in Carolina, who is four points ahead of the Caps. If they can’t pull out a win down south, a win may be mandatory on Sunday at home against New Jersey. If the Caps go winless in their two games over the weekend, they'd dig themselves a hole that'll be hard to climb out of...

Trade Deadline Glance...

Trade Deadline preview:
This is arguably the best time of the regular season. Teams are vying for playoff position, and deciding what they’ll do come Deadline Day. General Managers pulling the trigger on risky deals that may or may not help their team has always been a great part of the NHL Trade Deadline.
Tuesday will be no different! As many as 26 teams could be looking for the right deal to get them into the playoffs. With that said, this year may bring a different approach for some GMs. Teams could give up a key part of their current team to fill a need. Example: Pittsburgh may trade a player like Ryan Malone or Jordan Staal to acquire a defenseman, which they need if they have any hope of raising Lord Stanley. The Habs could look to trade goalie Cristobal Huet, although unlikely, to get another d-man or forward to solidify a playoff run.

Definite Sellers:

Kings, Maple Leafs, Oilers, Lightning

CRAZY night...

Montreal was down 5-0 at home to New York in the 2nd, come back to win 6-5 in a shootout. An unbelievable SO goal by Koivu to win! The Bell Centre must've a zoo tonight. Ryder & Kovalev each added a pair of goals.

Here in Nashville... the Dumont/Radulov/Arnott line does it again. Dumont scored with just under 2 minutes to go to seal points #70 & 71 for the Preds. The 2nd period was crazy also, with a combined 5 goals from the 2 teams. Nichol & Dumont each had a goal and 2 assists. Watch out for the Oil in coming years... good, young team.

In Pittsburgh... WOW. Another comeback. Pittsburgh was down 2-0 after 2 to Florida, but scored with 22 seconds to go to win. Ryan Malone definitely got lucky on the GWG, but hey, they'll take it. Malkin added 3 more assists... MVP??

Vancouver also had a comeback of their own. Down 2-1 in the 3rd, Naslund tied the game with over 4 minutes left to tie Minny at 2. Daniel Sedin scored in OT to finish the comeback.

Two other wild games:
Senators beat Philly 3-2 in a SO... 8 straight losses for the Flyers.
Bruins beat Carolina 3-2 in a SO

Wow, a crazy night in the NHL that will never be forgotten!!

POWER RANKINGS (2/18 - 2/24)

1. Stars
Last Week: 3-1-0
Minus a 5-2 hiccup in the desert, Dallas remains the team to beat in the NHL. They’re 9-1-0 in they’re last 10, and Turco has been playing out of his mind. Wins over Anaheim and Detroit solidified they’re standing as number one on these power rankings.
2. Ducks

Last Week: 2-1-0
Anaheim is now 6-1 since the return of the Finnish Flash. Of their 20 remaining games, 13 are at home. That could be enough to give the Ducks a second straight division title, but it’ll be tough to knock off the Stars from that reign.
3. Canadiens

Last Week: 3-1-0
Rookie goaltender Carey Price carried the Habs through the week, winning all three of his starts. Now in a tie with Ottawa, Montreal looks to take over the East lead this week. They have three home games to do so (NYR, PIT, CLB).
4. Penguins

Last Week: 1-2-0
Despite their solid win in Buffalo on Sunday, the Pens looked like an average team during the week, losing to both Boston and Carolina. Of course, this is all without Crosby, who could be back sooner than thought.
5. Devils

Last Week: 2-0-1
A shootout loss to Atlanta sandwiched in between two wins over the Sens is New Jersey’s only lowlight of the week. Their only flaw may be their power play, as they’re 5/30 in the month of February. This looks like a dangerous team come playoff time.
6. Wild

Last Week: 2-1-0
Minnesota is extending their lead a bit from the rest of the pack in the Northwest. A six-point lead has Jacques Lemaire’s bunch in a comfort level. Their steady season should keep rolling this week.
7. Red Wings

Last Week: 0-3-0
What’s happened to the Winged Wheel?? All of a sudden, Dan Cleary looks pretty darn valuable. Inconsistent goaltending has also played a factor in their six-game losing streak. Look out Detroit, here come the Stars.
8. Senators

Last Week: 0-2-1
What, what happened? They were back… now they look lost. The trade for Stillman and Commodore may not be enough to give Ottawa their first Cup. Gerber and Emery have to turn things around in net.
9. Rangers

Last Week: 2-0-0
New York had all week to think about their big weekend at the Garden. And oh, did they deliver! Lundqvist was a stalwart in net to stop the Sabres and Sharks. He stopped 58 out of 60 shots that came his way. They’re definitely sneaking up on the East.
10. Sharks

Last Week: 0-2-1
Has ‘Nabby’ been overworked? He’s started all but one game, and looks to be wearing down a bit. The front office needs to acquire a reliable backup for him so Nabokov can be ready for the second season.
11. Avalanche

Last Week: 0-3-0
Colorado’s luck seems to be running out. They scored just one goal in each game this week after their six goal outburst in Vancouver. Trading for some scoring help is essential for the Avs to be in the playoffs.
12. Sabres

Last Week: 2-2-0
Ryan Miller looked unbeatable in the first part of the week, and then was anything but over the weekend. Bad losses to the Rangers and Pens have this team looking for offense at the Trade Deadline.
13. Predators

Last Week: 2-1-1
Music City was rockin’ after the Preds’ 4-2 beating of archrival Detroit. Then, they laid an egg to Chicago at home. They bounced back nicely, though, snatching three points in two overtime games over the weekend. Nashville owns the best record in the NHL since the 1st of the year.
14. Coyotes

Last Week: 2-1-0
The Coyotes rebounded well from a disastrous seven game stretch by picking up home wins over Dallas and Los Angeles. Ilya Bryzgalov will have to continue carrying this team for any hope of playing beyond April 6th.
15. Hurricanes

Last Week: 3-0-0
Carolina’s wild comeback to beat Florida on Saturday capped off a great week. Why wasn’t it perfect? The loss of captain Rod Brind’Amour. His presence will be missed, especially on the PK. Let’s see what they can do this week against a tough slate.
16. Capitals

Last Week: 1-1-1
Ovechkin!?!? You there!?!? Alexander the GR8 is pointless in the last two games, but I’m sure it’s just a little bump in the road. Could Dwayne Roloson bring the Caps a playoff berth? Let’s see if they acquire the veteran netminder in the next week.
17. Flames

Last Week: 1-2-0
Have they burned out? This month hasn’t been too kind to Calgary, as they’re 3-6-0. Cujo’s just made one appearance since the Flames signed him to give Kipper some rest. Keenan needs to look at giving Joseph more time between the pipes.
18. Canucks

Last Week: 1-0-1
Vancouver’s moved up one spot this week, and the Canucks are sitting in seventh place in the West. Who would’ve predicted their brawl with the Oilers on Saturday night? Six fights took place in the 40 seconds. Maybe their finally showing the edge they need to succed in the postseason.
19. Bruins

Last Week: 1-1-1
The Bru Cru hasn’t scored more than three goals in a game since the start of the month. They’re playoff hopes are hanging in the balance. An acquisition of a top six forward is necessary to stay alive.
20. Blackhawks

Last Week: 3-0-0
What a difference a week makes. The Hawks looked dead in the water since the All-Star Break, but they broke out to score 13 goals in two nights over Columbus and Nashville. Toews’ return looks to be a major difference.
21. Flyers

Last Week: 0-4-0
Not much brotherly love going around in Philly right now for their Flyers, eh? They look like a team that wants to hit the golf course early this year. They’re in the midst of an atrocious seven game losing streak, and it doesn’t look to be getting easier anytime soon. In their next five games, they have to play Ottawa twice, Buffalo, and San Jose.
22. Panthers

Last Week: 1-1-1
Are they ever gonna go away?? Although their on a decline, they’ve always been a second half team. If they can survive through their March 4th game in Boston, the playoffs aren’t out the question. Nine of their 13 games are at home.
23. Thrashers

Last Week: 2-1-0
Dramatic shootout victories over Washington and New Jersey have Atlanta sitting just two points back of Carolina. But the big question in Blueland: Is Marian Hossa staying or going?
24. Blue Jackets

Last Week: 1-2-0
Columbus’ week was filled with blowouts. They lose at home 7-2, and their fans want to get rid of Rick Nash. Then they trounce the Wings at the Joe 5-1. The Jackets turn around, and lose 5-1 in St. Louis. Which team will show up down the stretch?
25. Islanders

Last Week: 3-0-0
The Islanders have suddenly played their way back into the mix. They scored 13 goals in the three games this week. A tough week lies ahead as the Isles look to stay in the hunt.
26. Blues

Last Week: 3-0-1
Manny Legace sure showed up this week. Legace boasted a 0.95 save percentage in the four-game stretch. A 2-1 overtime loss in Nashville was the Blues’ only loss of the week. The Blues are now just three points back of a playoff spot in the West.
27. Lightning

Last Week: 2-1-0
Although the Bolts picked up surprising wins over Montreal and Philadelphia, they still sit in last in the conference. The light at the end of tunnel is getting closer and closer.
28. Oilers

Last Week: 2-1-0
All I have to say is mark March 20th on your calendar! That’s the next time the Oilers and Canucks will go at it. Over 190 penalty minutes were logged in Saturday’s game. Now back to their playoff hopes… Kevin Lowe will have to come up with another great Trade Deadline for Edmonton to make the playoffs, if they’re buyers.
29. Maple Leafs

Last Week: 1-2-0
An overtime win over Boston salvaged the Leafs’ week. Things need to be turned around quickly if Toronto wants to keep their captain by the 26th. It’ll take a perfect week to do so.
30. Kings

Last Week: 1-2-0
The Queens are back where they belong… rock bottom. You can start counting down the days until Marc Crawford gets the boot.

Penguins @ Sabres

Team with most on the line:
New York Rangers
The Rangers will have a lot to play for this weekend, with two big home games against the Sabres and Sharks. They currently sit in ninth in the East, and need some wins to jump over Boston. These two games are big because if they don’t win these two, they’ll have two less home games to make it to the playoffs, and the Garden fans will become restless.

Night of the Unexpected!

Many unexpected things happened in the league tonight:
1. The Islanders actually beat the Flyers.. and scored more than 3 goals!
2. Tampa beats Montreal 3-2.. Prospal made his case to playoff teams by scoring 2 goals.. Montreal fans suddenly have Guy Carbonneau on the hot seat.. haha.. just kidding!
3. Buffalo trounced Ottawa in Scotiabank.. Vanek netted a hat trick in the debut for Stillman & Commodore.
4. Preds crunched the Wings 4-2.. a fast start propelled the Preds to a rare win over Detroit.. a HUGE win for Nashville.

One other thing to note:
The NHL must enforce a visor rule.. MUST! Ethan Moreau for the Oilers was clipped by Gaborik's skate on the eyelid.. although he came back & played later in the game, he's very lucky to have a right eye.
He's now the 2nd player in 3 days to be injured by a skate blade in the head area. Yes, Zednik's horrific injury occured in the neck, but close enough to enfore the rule.
The league needs to look into this, or else a tragedy will occur in the greatest game on earth.

Sens make wise trade

Today's trade:
Ottawa trades Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves

to Carolina for Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore

A very under the radar trade for Ottawa. Both Stillman and Commodore won the Cup with the Canes 2 years ago. Stillman also won the Cup with the Lightning before the lockout, and Commodore played for the Flames in those same Finals.
Stillman brings veteran leadership to a relatively young team, and he knows how to win. He will be an UFA this summer.
Commodore brings a tough edge to the Sens' blueline, something they haven't had since Zdeno Chara. He too is an UFA this summer.

Corvo is much-needed on the Hurricanes' blueline. His offensive presence should improve the power play. Patrick Eaves is a nice fit with Carolina, though he's struggled this season with Ottawa, battling injuries.

Ottawa won this trade fair and square. It'll make them a tougher out come April & May.

POWER RANKINGS (2/11 - 2/17)

1. Stars
Last Week: 3-0-0
A great week for Dallas, reeling off three straight wins against Western opponents. The Stars have won six in a row, giving up just nine goals in the process. That’s a recipe for success.
2. Penguins

Last Week: 3-0-1
Crosby who?? Evgeni Malkin has turned into a superstar, and put the Pens on his shoulders this week. ‘Geno’ tallied 12 points this week en route to three key Pittsburgh wins. Pittsburgh now looks down on the packed Atlantic Division.
3. Red Wings

Last Week: 1-2-1
After a nice comeback win in overtime over Minnesota, the Wings lost three straight to end the week. They lost to the lowly Kings and Leafs in non-Detroit fashion. Then fell to Anaheim at home controversially.
4. Ducks

Last Week: 4-0-0
The Selanne addition was sure welcomed by Randy Carlisle and company. Since he came back, the Ducks swept the metro New York trip and won in Detroit. Giguere seems to back on track after Anaheim’s 0-5-1 stretch heading into the week.
5. Senators

Last Week: 2-1-0
They’re baack! The Spezza-Heatley-Alfredsson line combined for all six of Ottawa’s goals in they’re beating of rival Montreal. Spezza had three goals and three assists, and Alfredsson added five points of his own. Look out Eastern Conference.
6. Wild

Last Week: 2-1-1
Minny had a bit of a shaky week, going to overtime thrice. But, they still look like the class of the Northwest, and a solid contender for the playoffs.
7. Sharks

Last Week: 2-1-0
San Jose bounced back nicely from a loss to Colorado with back-to-back home wins over Columbus and Nashville. Jonathan Cheechoo looks to be getting back to form by netting a hat trick against the Predators.
8. Canadiens

Last Week: 1-2-0
‘Hab Nation’ must be concerned. Montreal lost to two of their bitter rivals, Toronto and Ottawa, in ugly fashion. Cristobal Huet was chased in the first five minutes in Ottawa, and the offense can’t seem to do anything under pressure.
9. Avalanche

Last Week: 2-0-1
Unknown rookie T.J. Hensick scored three goals and added an assist on the week. Colorado has fared fairly well since the injuries to Smyth, Sakic, and Stastny. Look out for the Avs once all three are healthy once again.
10. Devils

Last Week: 2-1-1
The Devils pulled off a wild comeback on the Pens, but then dropped the next two before a 6-1 thumping of Carolina. Martin Brodeur has been stellar since the New Year, and could pick another Vezina Trophy.
11. Rangers

Last Week: 1-2-1
The roller coaster season of New York Ranger hockey continues. After a great week after the All-Star Break, the Rangers dropped two games at home to LA and Anaheim. Steve Valiquette manned the net over the weekend, and pulled off his second shutout in as many tries in Philly, but then blew a lead at Washington.
12. Flyers

Last Week: 1-3-0
For a two-week stretch, the Flyers looked like the team to beat in the East. Now they don’t. GM Paul Holmgren needs to add a winger to go with the struggling tandem of Daniel Briere and Simon Gagne.
13. Sabres

Last Week: 3-0-1
One week they’re on fire, one week they’re the complete opposite. This week was the former as Lindy Ruff’s squad sits just one point away from eighth. A big weeks lies in front of the Sabres as they’ll play Ottawa, Toronto, New York R., and Pittsburgh.
14. Capitals

Last Week: 3-1-0
Ovechkin Fever has officially taken over D.C. AO’s propelled the Caps from worst to first, with the help of Mike Green and Olaf Kolzig. Washington has been one of the best teams in the league since Christmas.
15. Flames

Last Week: 2-2-0
Calgary goes into their 5-game, Pacific Division road trip sitting in seventh in the West. Dion Phaneuf has made the front office they signed him to a long extension, scoring three goals since the signing.
16. Predators

Last Week: 2-1-1
The top line of Dumont-Arnott-Radulov has been on fire as of late. Jason Arnott had a 10-game point streak; J.P. Dumont had a 16-game point streak, and Alexander Radulov had a 6-game goal streak. Those streaks and consistent goaltending have the Predators thinking of a 4th straight playoff berth.
17. Bruins

Last Week: 1-2-0
It’s almost like you’re waiting for Boston to fall apart, isn’t it? They’re defense is starting to falter, and Tim Thomas had a brutal week. The Bruins need a good week to hold onto their eighth and final spot in the East.
18. Coyotes

Last Week: 1-2-1
The week started off on a good note for the Coyotes, winning a 4-3 OT stunner in Denver. But since then, they’ve blown a 3-0 lead in Calgary and lost twice at home to Columbus and Nashville. Peter Mueller’s shocking success is keeping their heads above water.
19. Canucks

Last Week: 2-1-1
Vancouver hasn’t really been the same since Christmas. Out of they’re seven wins since then, four have come in the shootout. Although they’re sitting in ninth, Roberto Luongo may not be enough to put the Canucks in the playoffs.
20. Blue Jackets

Last Week: 1-0-3
Ditto Boston. The Jackets are hanging for their lives as the offense is going dry. Thankfully for them, three OT/SO losses have kept Columbus within three points of the final playoff spot in the West.
21. Panthers

Last Week: 2-2-0
Florida continues to be one of the tougher teams to figure out. They’ve been hanging in all year, but are a bad stretch away from falling out of the playoff race.
22. Maple Leafs

Last Week: 2-1-0
The Leafs certainly rebounded well from an 8-0 loss at home to the Panthers. They went into Montreal and won, and beat Detroit in overtime on Saturday. The next two weeks will determine Mats Sundin’s fate as a Maple Leaf.
23. Thrashers

Last Week: 1-2-0
Kari Lehtonen saved this week from being a disaster, as the offense was virtually nonexistent. Ilya Kovalchuk has been off since the break, only tallying two goals since then.
24. Hurricanes

Last Week: 1-2-0
The ‘Canes scored just two goals in three games this week, and have coughed up their division lead. GM Jim Rutherford needs to make a splash at the trade deadline to save Carolina’s season.
25. Lightning

Last Week: 2-0-1
The Lightning had a good week, but a critical week awaits Tampa Bay, as they face Montreal, Philadelphia, and Washington. Four points are necessary to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
26. Kings

Last Week: 3-1-0
Who knew? LA is finally looking like a formidable team, as they beat the Rangers, Red Wings, and Jackets on the road.
27. Oilers

Last Week: 2-1-0
The Oilers are hanging on by their finger nails since the news on Horcoff. Without him for the rest season, it’ll take a big deadline deal for Edmonton to make it to the playoffs again.
28. Blues

Last Week: 0-2-1
St. Louis is fading fast, losing 11 of their last 13 games. The next two weeks are big if they want to be playing in mid-April.
29. Blackhawks

Last Week: 1-1-2
They’ve now lost six of seven after a nice four-game winning streak. There are a lot of problems in Chicago right now, and I don’t think Kane and Toews will be enough to cure them any time soon.
30. Islanders

Last Week: 0-2-1
The men of Long Island have fallen off the map since the New Year. They’re 4-9-5 since January 1. It’s looking more and more like they’ll be selling by February
26.

Thoughts & Prayers to Zednik

I'd have to say.. tonight's incident with Richard Zednik of the Panthers was the most frightening thing I've seen in a hockey game.. ever...
Everyone's thoughts & prayers should be with Zednik and his family, and wish him a speedy recovery!
