Who's Got 'Hart'???

(listed in predicted order of finish):

Jarome Iginla, CGY
Iginla has made his case for the Hart Trophy this month in a big way. He’s tallied 17 points (11 G, 6 A) and has come up with big goals all season. His nine game-winning goals are second in the league. Also, while Miikka Kiprusoff was struggling in net earlier in the year, Iginla carried the Flames, and kept a playoff spot in the mean time. He’s the ‘hart’ and soul of Calgary, and is the new ‘Captain Canada’. With all the pressure on him to produce and put up crooked numbers, Iginla is the front-runner for the Hart.
Alexander Ovechkin, WSH
AO is as close a second as there could be in this race. Ovechkin certainly has been the best and most clutch player in the league. He’ll assuredly win the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy, and currently leads Evgeni Malkin by four points with 107. But if Washington can’t find a way into the playoffs, he shouldn’t win it because all of the other candidates would have made the postseason. That fact alone would damage his chances.
Evgeni Malkin, PIT
The whole city of Pittsburgh wondered if the playoffs would still be in the equation when Crosby went down with his ankle injury. That thought was eliminated quickly when Evgeni Malkin took off. Malkin’s been the dominant player in the NHL this season and has single-handedly put the Pens on top of the east. The thing that could prevent Malkin from claiming the Hart is his clutchness (or lack thereof). Sure, he’s picked up huge goals. But he has only three game-winners this season; Ovechkin has 10, Iginla 9.
Joe Thornton, SJ
If San Jose would’ve been in this same position if Nabokov isn’t performing the way he is, Big Joe would be the front-runner… period. When you look up and down the Sharks roster, there hasn’t been a consistent scorer all year to put alongside Thornton. Cheechoo has been off and on, and Michalek and Marleau haven’t lived up to expectations. On the offensive front, Thornton has literally carried the Sharks this year. But the fact you could give the award to Nabokov, too, will make it hard for Thornton to come away with the Hart.

Weekend Primer

Games to Watch:

Friday-
Flyers @ Devils
Predators @ Blue Jackets
Canadiens @ Sabres
Canucks @ Wild
Oilers @ Avalanche
Sharks @ Ducks
Saturday-
Senators @ Bruins
Stars @ Kings
Canadiens @ Maple Leafs
Capitals @ Panthers
Oilers @ Flames
Sunday-
Rangers @ Penguins
Predators @ Red Wings
Avalanche @ Wild
Bruins @ Sabres
Stars @ Ducks
Flames @ Canucks

Team with most on the line:
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are team with the most on the line this weekend because their playoff hopes are on the line. Settling for just two points shouldn’t be an option. The Avalanche, Canucks, and Predators all play two games, too, and if Edmonton loses ground to all three this weekend, it may be too big a hole for the Oilers to dig out of next week.

The Curse of the European Captain

Here’s an interesting stat… no team has ever won a Stanley Cup with a European as their captain. So that means every Cup-winning team has had a North American as their captain.
If this stat holds up, that’ll be bad news for Detroit, Ottawa, and Montreal, all of whom have strong aspirations for winning hockey’s ‘holy grail’.

Here’s a look at the playoff contenders’ captains, with what country they’re from

Pittsburgh Penguins-
Sidney Crosby
(Canada)
Montreal Canadiens-
Saku Koivu
(Finland)
Carolina Hurricanes-
Rod Brind’Amour*
(United States)
Ottawa Senators-
Daniel Alfredsson
(Sweden)
New Jersey Devils-
Jamie Langenbrunner
(Canada)
New York Rangers-
Jaromir Jagr
(Czech Republic)
Philadelphia Flyers-
Jason Smith
(Canada)
Boston Bruins-
Zdeno Chara (Slovakia)
Washington Capitals-
Chris Clark*
(United States)
Buffalo Sabres-
Jason Pominville
(Canada)

Detroit Red Wings-
Nicklas Lidstrom
(Sweden)
San Jose Sharks-
Patrick Marleau
(Canada)
Minnesota Wild-
Marian Gaborik
(Slovakia)
Anaheim Ducks-
Chris Pronger (Canada)
Calgary Flames-
Jarome Iginla
(Canada)
Dallas Stars-
Brenden Morrow
(Canada)
Colorado Avalanche-
Joe Sakic
(Canada)
Vancouver Canucks-
Markus Naslund
(Sweden)
Nashville Predators-
Jason Arnott
(Canada)

*on injured reserve

Looking at this list, the only captains I can see standing next to Gary Bettman in mid-June are Sidney Crosby, Patrick Marleau, Chris Pronger, and Jarome Iginla.

NHL Draft Rewind: 2003

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to look back at some draft classes from the last 10-15 years.

Today’s draft class:
2003

Top 10 picks:
1. Marc-Andre Fleury, G, PIT
2. Eric Staal, C, CAR
3. Nathan Horton, RW, FLA
4. Nikolai Zherdev, RW, CLB
5. Thomas Vanek, LW, BUF
6. Milan Michalek, RW, SJ
7. Ryan Suter, D, NSH
8. Braydon Coburn, D, ATL (now w/ PHI)
9. Dion Phaneuf, D, CGY
10. Andrei Kostitsyn, LW, MON

Other notable 1st-rounders:
11. Jeff Carter, C, PHI
13. Dustin Brown, RW, LA
14. Brent Seabrook, D, CHI
17. Zach Parise, C, NJ
19. Ryan Getzlaf, C, ANA
24. Mike Richards, C, PHI
28. Corey Perry, RW, ANA

1st round busts (so far):
12. Hugh Jessiman, RW, NYR
26. Brian Boyle, C, LA
30. Shawn Belle, D, STL

Late round steals:
Round 5 – Nigel Dawes, LW, NYR
Round 7 – Joe Pavelski, C, SJ
Round 8 – Tobias Enstrom, D, ATL
Round 8 – Dustin Byfuglien, D, CHI
Round 9 – Jaroslav Halak, G, MON

Final thoughts:
This draft class has produced many of today’s young stars of the game. With players like Fleury, Staal, Horton, Vanek, Michalek, and Phaneuf selected in the top ten, you can look back at this class helped save hockey after lockout.

- The (Mighty) Ducks were able to draft two of their core players in the first round (Getzlaf and Perry).
- Philly drafted 2 of its young studs in the top 25 (Richards and Carter).
- Parise turns out to be a steal at 17 for New Jersey, along with the Ducks’ duo, as he’s ready to become a perennial all-star in the league.
- The Rangers have to be a loser in the draft, as Hugh Jessiman has bounced around in the minors since the draft. Between the ECHL and AHL, Jessiman hasn’t been able to produce NHL-ready numbers.

Power Rankings (3/24 - 3/30)

1. San Jose Sharks
Last Week: 3-0-0
San Jose’s been the hottest team in the NHL for the last month, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The previous two years, they’ve gotten red-hot in March to clinch a playoff spot. This year, though, their hot streak will likely give them a division title and the two seed in the west. Ron Wilson finally has a Shark team that could bring home Lord Stanley.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
Last Week: 2-1-0
The Penguins have become unstoppable at home. They’ve scored seven goals in three of the four games, all against formidable opponents (Buffalo, Philadelphia, New Jersey). This team is for real, and I could definitely see Sidney Crosby shaking Gary Bettman’s hand next to the Cup in June.
3. Anaheim Ducks
Last Week: 2-1-0
Anaheim put together a solid road trip this week. On the road trip, though, the Ducks only averaged 15 shots per game. If that continues, they surely won’t defend their title. Jonas Hiller came up huge on back-to-back nights after Giguere’s injury in warm-ups in San Jose. He survived the Shark attack, but couldn’t get enough offensive support. Then, Saturday night in Phoenix, he stood on his head for most of the game in their 2-1 win.
4. Montreal Canadiens
Last Week: 2-0-1
The city of Montreal has got to be on Cloud Nine right now with their Habs. Saku Koivu’s shootout winner Saturday night was one of the better moments this season, as it propelled the Canadiens to a season sweep of Boston. They’ll be battling it out with the Pens for the top spot in the east. They currently hold a five point lead over Ottawa in the Northeast Division. They play in Montreal this Tuesday, and if the Habs win, it should put the last nail in the coffin for the division title.
5. Detroit Red Wings
Last Week: 2-0-0
It seems to me that Detroit will again win the Presidents’ Trophy, their second in the last three years. They have the easiest schedule remaining, and they’ve been on a roll in March. It looks like Dominik Hasek will beat out Osgood to be the goalie in the playoffs.
6. New York Rangers
Last Week: 2-0-1
If you minus they’re two mysterious losses in Florida, the Rangers have picked up a point in each game since February 9. They pulled out two big wins over Pittsburgh and New Jersey to keep their division title hopes alive. We’ll see what this team is really about when they play Pittsburgh back-to-back this weekend.
7. New Jersey Devils
Last Week: 0-2-1
The Devils have hit a bump in the road by losing all three games this week. They lost at home to their NY Metro rivals, and then traveled to Pittsburgh to get their butts whopped 7-1 by Malkin and company. Tuesday’s home game against the Penguins will be huge.
8. Calgary Flames
Last Week: 2-1-0
The Flames won two crucial games this week over Colorado and Minnesota. Every game played in the Northwest Division the rest of the way is vital. The Flames still have to play the Canucks three times. In those three games, you’ll find out who’ll be battling Minnesota at the end for the division.
9. Carolina Hurricanes
Last Week: 2-0-0
Carolina has all but locked up the division, barring a collapse in their final six games. They get to play Tampa Bay twice and Atlanta at home. If they can beat Washington on Tuesday, that’ll give the ‘Canes a seven point cushion atop the division. You’ve got to wonder, though, if Cam Ward is getting overplayed. He’s started 14 straight games, including two back-to-back swings. That should be a concern in Carolina.
10. Ottawa Senators
Last Week: 1-1-0
This is the wrong time of year for Ottawa to be having goaltending issues. Once you think Martin Gerber is turning it around, he’ll have a terrible game. The Sens’ inconsistency will result in an early exit come playoff time.
11. Vancouver Canucks
Last Week: 2-1-0
Roberto Luongo had a solid week for Vancouver, and has the Canucks sitting in seventh place in the west. They have three big road games this week against Calgary, Colorado, and Minnesota. Their playoff hopes are looking good as they have a game in hand on Colorado and Nashville.
12. Philadelphia Flyers
Last Week: 3-0-0
Philly seems to be getting things turn around, as they sit in seventh place in the east with 86 points. The do or die stretch awaits the Flyers, as they have road dates with their Atlantic foes until the final weekend of the season. This will decide their fate, and maybe John Stevens’ fate, too.
13. Minnesota Wild
Last Week: 2-1-1
I like Minnesota’s chances to win the division, as four of their last six games will be played at home. The Wild will need that home-ice advantage to make a playoff run. Niklas Backstrom is coming into his own, giving up just five goals in his last four starts.
14. Washington Capitals
Last Week: 2-1-0
Huet and Kolzig are making a good combo in net as the Caps are pursuing a playoff berth. Alexander Ovechkin reached the 60 goal plateau with ease, and Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin are looking like his partners in crime for the future. Friday’s dramatic win in Atlanta is the game that will carry the Caps to the postseason.
15. Buffalo Sabres
Last Week: 1-1-0
This is the hardest team to figure out in the league. They blast the Lightning 7-4 earlier this week, then look like a totally different team against Toronto, losing 4-1. If they were just more consistent, the Sabres could be looking at their third consecutive playoff berth. Now, if they drop a home-and-home to Ottawa this week, they’ll be scrambling for their playoff lives.
16. Florida Panthers
Last Week: 1-0-1
Florida has closed within three points of eighth place by winning eight of nine in March. Tomas Vokoun is getting into the zone he was in during Nashville’s first playoff season. The Panthers can’t afford a two-game losing streak in their playoff pursuit. If they can somehow sneak into the playoffs, I believe Jacques Martin will save his job.
17. Dallas Stars
Last Week: 0-2-0
Dallas took a hit in this week’s rankings. Since Brad Richards’ unforgettable debut with the team, the Stars are 1-7-0. Marty Turco’s kind of fallen apart without a reliable backup, and the offense has been non-existent. Their playoff chances are looking pretty bleak at the moment.
18. Colorado Avalanche
Last Week: 0-3-0
The Avs have lost four in a row since their hot stretch in early March. The offense hasn’t been there when they need it. The perfect way to stop their cold spell is to pick up victories over Calgary and Vancouver at home this week. If they can’t win either of those, they may fall out of the playoff picture.
19. Edmonton Oilers
Last Week: 2-1-0
It would be a true miracle if the Oilers were able to make the playoffs, and here’s why:
1. Horcoff, Souray, Torres, and Moreau (captain) are on Injured Reserve and likely won’t return this season.
2. Rookies (Gagner and Cogliano) have the Oilers through this final stretch of the season.
Props to Craig MacTavish and company for making the best of all the injuries they’ve suffered. If Edmonton creeps into postseason play, MacTavish should be considered for the Jack Adams Trophy.

20. Boston Bruins
Last Week: 0-1-1
Boston has really hit a wall in the month of March. They are 3-5-4, and are holding onto a playoff spot by a thread. Luckily for the Bruins, the NHL hands out a point for OT losses. They have 10 such losses, which is the difference in them being in playoff contention.
21. Nashville Predators
Last Week: 1-2-0
It’s fair to say that the Preds saved their season with Saturday’s shootout win. Had they lost that game, Nashville would’ve gone into their final six games with a seven game losing streak at home. Dan Ellis came up big, and now the Preds have their confidence back after a sluggish week. Their remaining schedule is in their favor compared to Colorado and Edmonton.
22. Toronto Maple Leafs
Last Week: 3-0-0
Toronto’s doing almost all they can in an effort to make the playoffs. But, here’s the devil’s advocate: What if they miss the playoffs?? Leafs fans will be crying foul that they didn’t keep losing to be in the Steve Stamkos sweepstakes. Sweeping Boston this week may be the Leafs’ only way of sneaking in.
23. Chicago Blackhawks
Last Week: 2-0-1
I’ve been doubting these guys constantly, and they keep responding with wins. This team is very pesky and talented. Playoffs are not out of the question, but they’ll likely need to win out to have any hope. But whether they make the playoffs or not, they’ll challenge Detroit for the division next year.
24. Columbus Blue Jackets
Last Week: 1-2-0
Although the Oilers are virtually out of the playoff picture, they’re looking like a team that could compete next year. Rookies Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano led Edmonton to two overtime wins this week.
25. Phoenix Coyotes
Last Week: 0-3-1
You gotta give credit where credit is due, and Wayne Gretzky deserves some. His Coyotes weren’t expected to get out of the cellar this season. But the acquisitions of Ilya Bryzgalov and Radim Vrbata helped Phoenix make a valiant push for the postseason in February. Reality is catching up to them, but ‘Yotes Nation is thrilled about all the young talent that the desert possesses. They’ll be a contender next year, no doubt.
26. Los Angeles Kings
Last Week: 2-1-0
I think next year’s goaltending situation should go a little like this: Jonathan Bernier!! Let the kid play. The future of this franchise relies on him and Kopitar. You see what Carey Price is doing in Montreal as a rookie. Let Bernier play and get experience under his belt. With how tough the west is, and how the bright the future is in that conference, and can’t see LA making the playoffs in the next five to ten years unless something drastic happens.
27. New York Islanders
Last Week: 1-2-0
New York’s other team is making scoring look like a tough task. They snapped a six-game losing streak by winning in New Jersey for the third time this season. At least their giving future stud Kyle Okposo a taste of the big leagues before next year.
28. Tampa Bay Lightning
Last Week: 0-3-0
This week was all about third period lapses for the Bolts. They gave up 10 goals in the final period in their three games this week. That’s just not going to cut it in this league. Karri Ramo and Mike Smith will make a nice 1-2 combo next year between the pipes. I believe this year was a fluke on the Bay, and the Lightning will return to the playoffs soon.
29. St. Louis Blues
Last Week: 1-1-1
The only thing that I have to say about the Blues is that the NHL gave them the shaft by scheduling nine straight road games in March. That should never happen again in this league. I feel for ya Blues fans…
30. Atlanta Thrashers
Last Week: 0-3-0
GM Don Waddell needs to go out and rebuild the defensive unit. Alexei Zhitnik, Niclas Havelid, Ken Klee, and Steve McCarthy are all below average veterans who should never sniff the top defensive line. And you’ve got to wonder if Kari Lehtonen will ever live up to the hype. He’s been nothing but a sieve this year, with some of that lying on the defense… but still!

Where should the '09 Winter Classic be held?

There's been various reports that next year's Winter Classic will be Rangers/Islanders at Yankee Stadium. Personally, I don't think that'd be a good game to have. The Islanders' only marketable player is Rick DiPietro, and they probably won't be any good next year, though it is a long time away from now. I know the NHL & Yankee Stadium think it'd be cool to close out the stadium with a highly publicized event.. but it just wouldn't seem right. There would a lot of bad seats for fans in a baseball stadium.

Anyways, I've thought of some places & matchups that could suit the 2009 Winter Classic...

Breaking down the Calder Trophy race

Photobucket

Carey Price, MON
The ‘Price is right’ in my book. Carey Price outplayed Cristobal Huet for the starting job in Montreal, resulting in the Habs trading Huet to Washington at the trade deadline. Now, look at Montreal. They’ve cruised since the trade, and Price has been the X-factor. Since he was recalled from the AHL in early February, Price is 9-5-0 with a 2.50 GAA. That’s pretty doggone good for a rookie in this league. If the Canadiens end up winning the division and claiming the top spot in the east, Price has got to be the favorite for the Calder.
Patrick Kane, CHI
The number one pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft has done nothing but drop jaws in the Windy City this season. He’s been truly magnificent. Two things that could keep Kane from winning the Calder are his dry spells and the fact that Chicago won’t be playing playoff hockey. Granted, that shouldn’t be a big factor at all, but considering Carey Price is the starting goaltender for the class of the east, it may have to be. Kane leads the ‘Hawks with 63 points, and has been almost automatic in the shootout. Although Kane’s had a marvelous rookie season, it may not be enough to top Price.
Nicklas Backstrom, WSH
Backstrom has made a late charge for the Calder Trophy after a sluggish start to his season. He’s been blazing since Christmas as he and Ovechkin will try to lead the Caps to a playoff berth. The slick center from Sweden has 64 points and a plus/minus rating of +10. Four of his 14 goals are game-winners, including Friday’s dramatic win in Atlanta. Any other year, he may be a favorite… but this year, he’ll fall a bit short.
Jonathan Toews, CHI
Kane’s partner in crime has dazzled in Chicago also, and probably has as many goals on Sportcenter’s Top 10 plays as Crosby and Ovechkin. The third overall pick in the ’06 draft led off his rookie season with a point in ten consecutive games. Injuries, though, have slowed his production. Like Backstrom, he’d be a favorite in any other year

Peter Mueller, PHX
Mueller likely won’t win this award, but he sure put up a good fight. From January 5 to February 10, he posted gaudy numbers: 11 goals and 10 assists in 17 games. He cooled off thereafter, and so have the Coyotes. He’s really been the unsung hero for Phoenix. There is a hidden gem in the Valley of the Sun, and Peter Mueller is it.

Saturday Observations

Northwest Shootouts:
The two games played in the Northwest Division today were abnormally high-scoring. Usually you'll see 2-1 or 3-2 type games in this division, especially with the playoff implications in these games. Edmonton defeated Colorado 7-5, and Calgary topped Minnesota 5-4. Edmonton needed a win against Avs today, or else their playoff hopes would have taken a blow. Seven goals were scored in the third, including four in less than three minutes. The Wild could’ve extended their division lead to a comfortable five points, but it was trimmed to one behind Jarome Iginla’s hat trick.
What, what happened???
Two teams that are gradually slipping in the standings blew leads at home today. First, the Stars a 2-1 lead late in the third to the lowly Kings, and ended up losing 4-2. Michal Handzus tied the game with just over two minutes left, and Lubomir Visnovsky gave LA the lead less than a minute later. Meanwhile, in Ottawa, the Sens lost again to the Leafs. In less than 2:30, Ottawa vaulted to a 4-2 lead late in the second period. But Toronto closed the game with three unanswered goals, and continued the woes of the Senators’ net-minders.
7-1!?!? WOW!
Pittsburgh hammered their rival New Jersey 7-1 tonight, and chased Martin Brodeur early on in the third. Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Malone each scored a pair of goals to give the Pens the outright lead to the Atlantic Division. I guess I shouldn't be too suprised by the outcome, considering that in three out of their four games they’ve put seven goals on the board.
Panthers on the prowl:
Florida won its ninth game in their last ten to close within three points of the eighth and final playoff spot. Their 4-2 over Tampa Bay continued their improbable playoff push. But seriously… can you really see these ‘Cardiac Cats’ in the playoffs over Boston, Philly, or Buffalo?
Nashville finally shakes off home struggles:
I observed this one from the not-so-friendly confines (lately) of the Sommet Center. Dan Ellis essentially saved the Preds’ season in a 2-1 shootout win over Chicago. It definitely felt like a playoff game in the building, and they needed to win this one to avoid a seven-game losing streak at home.

Habs sweep Original Six rival:
The Canadiens swept the season-series against their archrivals from Boston in exciting fashion. Saku Koivu’s shootout winner gave the Habs their 11th straight victory over the ‘Bru Cru’. If the Canadiens and Bruins split those eight games, the Northeast Division race is a whole different story.

Can you say March Madness???

Photobucket
As America gets wrapped up in the NCAA Tournament over the next couple weeks, the NHL will be displaying their own version of ‘March Madness’ during the same time period. All 30 teams have less eight games or less remaining on their schedule and the patience is running short for teams that are in the race for a playoff berth. Players start taking a peek at the ‘Out-of-town Scoreboard’ during timeouts, and giving it their all for the full 60 minutes.

In the Northwest Division, four teams have a realistic chance at taking the division; the Atlantic Division in the east has three teams within two points for the division crown; lastly, Northeast rivals Ottawa and Montreal will go toe-to-toe during the final two weeks to see who’ll claim the division title. San Jose, with their 2-1 win over Anaheim tonight, has won 14 out of 15 to essentially clinch the Pacific. Carolina and Detroit respectively sit comfortably atop their own divisions.

Looking at the big picture now, six teams are fighting for the final two spots in the east, and five teams in the west are trying to catch Colorado for the eighth seed.

Alexander Ovechkin is proving my opinion about him vs. Malkin wrong as he’s been white-hot in the month of March, posting eight multi-point games. He's working on getting to his first career 2nd season. The ‘City of Brotherly Love’ is growing weary of their Flyers as they’ve struggled since the beginning of February. The Bruins are attempting to lock up their first postseason berth since the Lockout, and the Sabres are desperately trying to clinch their third straight playoff berth. Toronto and Florida are crossing their fingers that a miracle could happen so they could sneak into the postseason.

Out west, the Predators need to snap out of their recent funk if they want to go to the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Edmonton, Chicago, Columbus, and Phoenix are also trying to put together late-season runs to catch the Avalanche, who currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot.

It’s now or never for these teams. Players and coaches are trying to keep their jobs for next season, too. This is truly the time to get into playoff mode, if you haven’t already, as the playoffs are less than three weeks away.

If the playoffs started today...

Then, on Saturday, they’ll travel to Calgary. These back-to-back games are very critical if the Wild want to take the division. Minnesota will have just six games remaining after this weekend.

Separating the Contenders from the Pretenders...

Taking the current playoff teams, I separate the contenders and prentenders...

EASTERN CONFERENCE
New Jersey Devils
CONTENDERS
New Jersey is definitely contenders, and probably the favorites out of the East. Martin Brodeur and Patrik Elias have all the playoff experience in the world. Brian Gionta and Zach Parise have a flare for the dramatic, and Jamie Langenbrunner just knows how to score big goals in the playoffs.
Montreal Canadiens
CONTENDERS
Before the Trade Deadline, I probably would have said the Habs were pretenders. But with Carey Price now manning the net, this team seems to have more comraderie (spelling?) and have won the big games this year. They come at you with so many weapons offensively, that it's hard to stop all three scoring lines on one night. They also know how to win on the road, which is important in the 2nd season.
Carolina Hurricanes
PRETENDERS
The 'Canes are big-time pretenders. They play in a weak division, and won't be able to last a round or two against a much better Eastern Conference compared to their 06 Cup run. The loss of Brind'Amour will haunt them come April.
Pittsburgh Penguins
CONTENDERS
If Ty Conklin can play half-decent, the Pens should make a deep run. Malkin has turned into a dominant player, and a potential Crosby/Hossa pairing will be hard to be stopped by any defensive unit in the East.
Ottawa Senators
PRETENDERS
This team doesn't have the 'it' factor they had a year ago. The only line that's scoring consistently is the Spezza/Heatley/Alfredsson line, and they've had questions in net all year. They'll likely have to take on either Pittsburgh or New Jersey in the first round, which is a recipe for failure for the Sens.
New York Rangers
CONTENDERS
By far the most dangerous team in the playoffs. Jaromir Jagr is the key. If he turns it on in the playoffs, the Blueshirts could find themselves in the EC Finals or even the Cup Finals. They're that good. Henrik Lundqvist is in his zone, and they were scorching before they're bump in the road in Florida and Tampa Bay.
Boston Bruins
PRETENDERS
This team is not made for the playoffs. Tim Thomas has no playoff experience, and lack a go-to guy offensively. They've had a nice regular season run, but their playoff stay will be short-lived... if they hang on to a spot.
Philadelphia Flyers
PRETENDERS
Biron and Niittymaki are way too inconsistent in net for the Flyers to be contenders. They can never have all their offensive weapons clickling on all cylinders, and that'll cost 'em against the Pens, Habs, or Devils.

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Detroit Red Wings
PRETENDERS
I'm sorry to say this, but the Wings are pretenders. They benefit from playing the Blues, Jackets, and 'Hawks. They'll cruise into the playoffs with the Presidents Trophy, and lose their intensity. They'll play an 8 seed who had to fight tooth and nail to the final day of the season, and will have the competitive advantage. I don't like the Wings' chances in the playoffs.
San Jose Sharks
CONTENDERS
Team Teal finally has a team that can win in the playoffs. This team SHOULD win the West. This team SHOULD win the Cup. Big Joe and Nabby are sick of losing in the playoffs, and the acquisition of Brian Campbell was the perfect move. The Stanley Cup could be staying put in Cali.
Minnesota Wild
PRETENDERS
The Wild have had trouble finding the right leader this season. They've faded a bit in the last month, and seemingly can't score when they need to. Minny's 2nd season will last only 5-6 games.
Anaheim Ducks
CONTENDERS
The defending champs are primed and ready for a deep run once again. Giguere is absolutely on fire, and the return of Selanne and the other Niedermayer has benefitted greatly. The only problem is that they may have to face the Stars in the first round, and the Ducks can't find a way to beat them.
Dallas Stars
CONTENDERS
This may be a bit of a surprise, but the Stars are definitely contenders. Mike Ribeiro has been a pleasant surprise, and Captain Brendan Morrow has the heart of a champion. If they don't claim home-ice they better wish for the sixth seed. When it's all said and done, the Dallas Stars are definitely contenders for the playoffs.
Calgary Flames
CONTENDERS
Jarome Iginla has the capability to literally carry the Flames on his shoulders. Kiprusoff will have to become more consistent, though, along with the secondary scoring lines. But with Iginla as your captain, you'll always have the potential to win the Cup.
Vancouver Canucks
PRETENDERS
Last year they got lucky by drawing a down Stars team in the 1st round. This team has no consistent scoring, and Luongo has become inconsistent in net at GM Place. The Canucks could give Detroit a run for their money if they pair up with them, but they'd be toast against any other West foe.
Colorado Avalanche
PRETENDERS
You don't know which Jose Theodore the Avs will get in the playoffs. They also don't know if Forsberg will stay healthy... and Ryan Smyth doesn't look to be coming back soon. Colorado has made a nice run to get into contention, but any trip to the playoffs will be short-lived.

There you go.. those are your contenders and pretenders for the 2008 NHL Playoffs.

If the Sabres would like to return to the playoffs, it may be a good idea to win both games they play this weekend. They’ll host the Hurricanes on Friday, which should be a victory, and travel to Toronto on Saturday, which is always a tough battle. Buffalo’s four points behind Philly for the eighth and final spot in the East, and are 2-5-3 in their last ten. If they can’t pull out a point this weekend, it’ll probably be a hole too deep to dig out of for the Sabres.

Who will take the Vezina this season???

Photobucket
Breakdown of the candidates for the Vezina…

Martin Brodeur, NJ
Arguably the best goaltender to ever live is on track to win his fourth Vezina Trophy. Martin Brodeur, the 2007 winner of the Vezina, has carried the Devils to the top of the Eastern Conference once again. He’s started all but five games for New Jersey, and is posting numbers that are at par with last year. Brodeur has a 2.14 GAA with 38 wins. He may only have four shutouts compared to last year’s 12, but the defense in front of him isn’t as consistent.
Evgeni Nabokov, SJ
‘Nabby’ has as good an argument to win the Vezina as any other goalie in the league. He’s started 67 of 69 games for San Jose, and currently leads the NHL in wins for goaltenders (40). With the Sharks scoring less than last season, the Sharks have had to rely on Nabokov even more to step up. He’s putting up career numbers, and has San Jose in position to potentially win the Pacific Division.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere, ANA
Giguere is probably the ‘sleeper’ in this year’s Vezina Trophy race, if you can imagine that. No one has really talked about with Nabby and Marty stealing the attention. He struggled when he returned from injury in October, but has turned it on tremendously since Thanksgiving. He posted an 8-1-1 record in February, with a 1.28 GAA. ‘Jiggy’ has seemed impossible to beat in the last two months. That’s why the Ducks are the favorite to repeat as Stanley Cup champs.
Roberto Luongo, VAN
The thing that might keep Luongo from claiming the Vezina is his inconsistency in net. At the times, he’s been the best net-minder in the NHL, but at some times he hasn’t been himself. He had an 11-game stretch in January and February where didn’t give up less than two goals, in which Vancouver went 3-5-3. Luongo will always be a great goalie, but his numbers aren’t quite Vezina-esque this season.
Marty Turco, DAL
Turco has been in kind of an odd spot this year. At times, it seemed like Mike Smith was in the process of stealing the number one job from Turco. During the Stars’ dominant stretch in February, he was on fire. But he hasn’t been able to put together a string of games where he’s dominant like Brodeur and Giguere. That could the main reason why Turco’s not a favorite.
Henrik Lundqvist, NYR
‘Henrik the Great’ has been by far the MVP for the Rangers this year. The thing that’ll probably cost Lundqvist the chance at the Vezina is because of his numbers. There’s been some games where he was lights out, but some other games he’s been clueless in net. The only realistic shot he has at winning this trophy is if they can win the division, which is entirely possible.

Well, that’s your Vezina Trophy breakdown. Vote on who you think will win the Vezina on the right side of this page.
