FREE AGENT FRENZY PREDICTIONS!!!!

I’ve evaluated all of the possibilities for the top free agents, and here are my predictions of where they’ll end up this week (I know it’s a crapshoot, but what the heck?):
1. Marian Hossa, RW
Prediction:
Edmonton Oilers (6 yr, $52 mil)
Analysis: I know this is a surprise (and kind of a long-shot), but I really think Hossa will sign with a ‘smaller’ market team, rather than a New York or Boston, so he can be the go-to-guy. Kevin Lowe is desperate to make a franchise-changing move. Hossa would instantly make Edmonton the favorite in the Northwest if Garon plays well in net. They’re already the fastest team in the league, and Hoss would fit in well there.
2. Mats Sundin, C
Prediction: Montreal Canadiens (2 yr, $13 mil)
Analysis: I think Sundin and Gainey will come to an agreement eventually. He seems committed to play in Montreal this season. However, Montreal is no lock, as New York and Detroit are also in on signing the Swede.
3. Brian Campbell, D
Prediction: Chicago Blackhawks (5 yr, $37.5 mil)
Analysis: Campbell would basically be the last piece of the puzzle for the ‘Hawks. He wants to get closer to the east coast, and going to the Windy City would make sense. This seems like a great fit for both parties.
4. Jaromir Jagr, RW
Prediction:
Russia
Analysis: There were grumblings all year long that Jagr could end up overseas for this coming season. I believe those grumblings now. Jagr seems like the guy who would make such a move. He and Rangers GM Glen Sather aren’t getting along right now, so the timing wouldn’t be better for Jagr to go over to Russia or maybe Czech Republic.
5. Brian Rolston, RW
Prediction:
Tampa Bay Lightning (3 yr, $12 mil)
Analysis: With Rolston’s rights traded to the Bolts last night, it’s a fairly good sign that Rolston will end up in Tampa.
6. Pavol Demitra, RW
Prediction: Vancouver Canucks (3 yr, $12 mil)
Analysis: Ever since the lockout, Vancouver’s been desperate for offense. They finally get it in Demitra. He visited Vancouver immediately after Minnesota was eliminated in the playoffs. It seems like this is bound to happen.
7. Wade Redden, D
Prediction: Carolina Hurricanes (3 yr, $10.5 mil)
Analysis: The ‘Canes need help on the blueline… badly! Redden would provide solid play on both ends of the ice, although he is past his prime. But getting out of Ottawa may help this ex-All Star.
8. Cristobal Huet, G
Prediction: Washington Capitals (4 yr, $20 mil)
Analysis: Huet played great with the Caps in their late-season playoff push. Although he was shaky in the playoffs, Washington would love to have his services for a full year. I believe Huet likes DC, too.
9. Joe Sakic, C
Prediction: Colorado Avalanche (1 yr, $7 mil)
Analysis: I really think if he was going to retire, he would’ve announced by now. He still has some left in the tank to be a major factor for the Avs, and I think 08-09 could be his final campaign.
10. Kristian Huselius, LW
Prediction: Montreal Canadiens (4 yr, $14 mil)
Analysis: Wow… The Habs got Sundin, Tanguay and Huselius in the same off-season?? You bet. Huselius wants to play here, and Gainey wants him, too. This would be a great pickup for Montreal.
11. Markus Naslund, LW
Prediction: Pittsburgh Penguins (2 yr, $7 mil)
Analysis: I think Naslund would be a great fit in the Steel City. He'd be a good go-to-guy for either Malkin or Crosby.
12. Jose Theodore, G
Prediction: Ottawa Senators (3 yr, $13.5 mil)
Analysis: Sens fans will be dancing in the streets of Ottawa this week… why, you ask?? Because they finally got themselves a goaltender. It’s looking like Theodore will no longer be an Av tomorrow. It won’t take long for this to happen.
13. Brad Stuart, D
Prediction: Detroit Red Wings (2 yr, $6 mil)
Analysis: Re-signing Stuart would be big for the Wings. He was very solid in the playoffs, and loves the city. Stuart would solidify the best defense in the league.
14. Sean Avery, C
Prediction: Boston Bruins (2 yr, $7 mil)
Analysis: Avery is actually a sought after player in this league. Boston doesn’t really have anyone that has the ‘enforcer’ title. They could suddenly have that, and at the same time, get a guy who’ll score 15-20 goals. And oh yeah, he’ll be a pain in the backside of the Bruins’ opponents. The city of Boston would love him.
15. Radim Vrbata, RW
Prediction: Columbus Blue Jackets (4 yr, $14 mil)
Analysis: The Jackets need more scoring up front, and Vrbata would be nice in Columbus. If they could sign him, the Jackets would certainly be moving the right direction.
16. Michael Ryder, RW
Prediction: Vancouver Canucks (3 yr, $9 mil)
Analysis: He’s going to be happy that he’s out of Montreal. For the last two years, he felt unwanted there. The Canucks will still need offense after signing Demitra, and Ryder would fit well there.
17. Michal Rozsival, D
Prediction:
St. Louis Blues (3 yr, $7.5 mil)
Analysis: A power play with Erik Johnson and Rozsival on the blueline?? That would definitely be a formidable man advantage. Rozsival will be happy to get out of the bright lights of New York, and St. Louis needs more defense. A perfect fit if you ask me…
18. Brooks Orpik, D
Prediction:
Washington Capitals (4 yr, $12 mil)
Analysis: Orpik will be one of the more interesting players to track over the next few days. I think in the end, he’ll go to Washington. It makes a lot of sense, considering they’ve gotten rid of Eminger, and could lose Green. Orpik would be a great piece to the Capitals’ puzzle.
19. Mark Streit, D
Prediction: New York Rangers (4 yr, $12 mil)
Analysis: Since the Rangers missed out on Campbell and Redden, the Blueshirts go to the 2nd tier to find their much-needed d-man. I think Streit would be a solid addition to New York’s blueline, but still not quite what they were looking for.
20. Darcy Tucker, LW
Prediction: Calgary Flames (2 yr, $6 mil)
Analysis: Tucker is the type of player the Flames need. If Owen Nolan leaves/retires, this move only makes more sense. He’d make a nice line with Lombardi and Nystrom.

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM!

Today's Rumors & Tidbits...
- The Thrashers bought out Alexei Zhitnik, and the Blue Jackets did the same to Duvie Westcott.
- RFA Rostislav Olesz re-signed with the Panthers to a 6 year, $18.75 million contract.
- HockeyBuzz.com is reporting that Sundin will go to tomorrow as an UFA... Eklund is also reporting that Detroit is suddenly a good candidate to sign the Swede.
- Defenseman Brian Campbell will be in Ottawa tomorrow, and the Sens are near the top of his list. Take that for what it's worth!
- The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that GM Doug Wilson will likely hold on to Marleau.
- Also, there's news that the Devils are going to be in the Hossa sweepstakes... isn't every team going to be in on him??
- Preds' Marek Zidlicky's no-trade clause expires at midnight. I believe there will be a Zid/Cheechoo swap this week...
- (UPDATE 5:50 CST) Prospal and the Bolts have come to terms on a multi-year deal, TSN reports.
- (UPDATE 8:45 CST) Corey Perry is close to re-signing with the Ducks, for APPROXIMATELY $5.325 million, says TSN. Think that number goes under the category of 'approximately'??
- Andreas Lilja re-signed in Detroit to a 2-year deal.

5 TEAMS TO WATCH!!

(Yes, I realize they’re all from the west… it just happened that way!)

Edmonton Oilers
GM Kevin Lowe has stated that he wants to make a splash in free agency this summer. Hossa?... Campbell? Who knows… but I’m pretty confident he’ll pull something off. He doesn’t have too much cap room to spend, however. They’ve already acquired Visnovsky from LA, so I’d expect Lowe to reel in a top 6 forward. The Oilers are a legit playoff contender for next year, but if they sign Hossa or trade for a big-time player, they would likely become division favorites. The Oilers will definitely be a team I keep a close eye on tomorrow and throughout the frenzy.
Chicago Blackhawks
Well, let’s see here. They already have Kane and Toews in the fold, and have a bevy of young guns on the horizon. So their future is set. They’ll be a major play this week, that’s for sure. I think at the top of their list is Brian Campbell. He’s the one player that would put over the top, and give Detroit a run for their money. They’d be that good! If they strikeout on him, I think they’ll settle for some veterans who can still score (Brunette, Bertuzzi). I certainly think GM Dave Tallon will improve this team in a big way this summer.
Columbus Blue Jackets
I think they’re the wild card in all of this. They have $32+ million to spend. That could be enough to bring in Campbell. They still have a lot of work to do to be considered a threat to make the postseason, but they’re only about 3-4 players away. This next calendar year is for sure a statement year for the Jackets’ organization. Will they become the Arizona Cardinals of the NHL?? Rick Nash is a free agent after next season, so his days in Columbus could be numbered if they don’t improve this season. They’ve already brought in Umberger (although not signed yet (RFA)), but they’re headed in the right direction… I think.
San Jose Sharks
Another team I will keep my eye on this summer. GM Doug Wilson will also be under the gun next spring if they don’t live up to expectations. Will they trade Marleau?? Will they trade Cheechoo?? Will they trade Thornton?? Those questions will be answered fairly soon, but the Sharks need to make changes to succeed in the playoffs. I know rumors state that San Jose will be in on the Hossa sweepstakes… but I just don’t buy it. I think they need to bring a game-changing defenseman, either through the trade route or free agency. But the current defensive core will never do well in the playoffs.
Phoenix Coyotes
I know they’re a long shot to sign a marquee free agent this week (not many of them), but they’re suddenly attractive. The Jokinen trade helped, but they already have an amazing core of young talent. Phoenix isn’t your traditional hockey market, but it’s a great place to live. And the ‘Yotes will be in the playoffs in the next 3 years, no doubt! So I think Gretzky and company will be able to reel in some key free agents this year
.

Malone signs... Updated

Sportsnet.ca is reporting that the Tampa Bay Lightning have reached agreement to a long-term deal with Ryan Malone. They have also reached terms with Gary Roberts. I give the Tampa front office an A+ for this. First, they only give up a 4th-rounder for both of their rights. Second, they sign them the next day. Malone's contract is as follows: 7 years, $31.5 million. Overpriced, no doubt... but still a great signing by Feaster and company. I think you'll see the Bolts make some more good moves this week... Lightning fans should be really excited about their team right now!
Other tidbits:
- Ex-Isles goalie Wade Dubielewicz, who is an UFA, will sign with a team (AK Kazan) over in Russia.
- Calgary is reportedly going to go after Darcy Tucker.
- There are many conflicting reports with Sundin and his status. Some say he is going to Montreal, some say he isn't. Here's my 2 cents... he's going to sign with Montreal. It's just a matter of when it'll happen. I think Gainey and Koivu have persuaded Sundin to go to the Habs.
- Philly has signed RFA d-man Steve Eminger to a 1-year deal.
- (UPDATE 9:50 CST) John-Michael Liles and Adam Foote re-signed in Colorado. Good moves by the Avs.
- Trade: Oilers acquire Lubomir Visnovsky from Los Angeles in exchange for Jarrett Stoll and Matt Greene. Great trade by Edmonton... I can definitely see Visnovsky excelling in Northern Alberta. On the Kings front... that remains to be seen. Greene has 'potential' but all he is right now is a decent defenseman. And Stoll, well, he's as bipolar a hockey player than any other in the league. He can look like 2 different players in the same game. You know what this also means?? Pitkanen is a goner in Edmonton...
- (UPDATE 10:50 CST) Rolston's negotiating rights have just been traded to the Bolts for a conditional future draft pick. Are you serious?? Jay Feaster and the new ownership are poning the NHL right now. If they only had a goalie...

Saturday's Tidbits

  • TSN is reporting that the Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired the negotiating rights to Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts for a 4th round pick... I actually had Malone going to Tampa in my UFA predictions (which will be released on Monday) before this went down. It makes too much sense.
  • Todd Bertuzzi and Andrew Raycroft both cleared waivers
  • The New York Post is reporting that the Rangers and Jagr aren't getting along right now. GM Glen Sather is only willing to give him a one-year deal, while Jagr wants a mult-year deal.

In the shoes of... Minnesota's Doug Risebrough

1. What’s the team’s status with Rolston??
Well, it’s been on-and-off talks with him and his agent. There’s really nothing new to report. We’ve put our best offer on the table. It’s up to him whether he wants to return to our organization. I’d say it’s about 50-50 that he returns.
2. Are you shopping Gaborik??
No… not at all; we’re listening to offers. He’s due to become a free agent after next season, so we’d like to get something for him if he heads elsewhere next summer. But he’s such a big part of our team that we’d need to be blown away by an offer from another team. He’s also the fan favorite here… so we can’t let down our fans if the trade doesn’t benefit our team.
3. Is Lemaire on the hot seat??
Yes and no. He’s in trouble if we don’t reach the playoffs next spring. He’s a great coach, but there always comes a time where you have to move on. Players have told me that they’d like to hear a new voice, so we’re taking that into consideration. But for now, his job is safe. Ask this question again next April and I’ll have a better answer for you.

Friday Tidbits

  • Todd Bertuzzi has been waived by the Ducks.. a bit of surprise here, but he never fit in there. Good move by Burke to free up some space to sign some players next week.
  • Forward Shawn Bates has been waived by the Islanders
  • Jaromir Jagr was given an offer to play for Omsk of the Russian Super League. The offer is reportedly $35 million for 3 years. Will he stay or go?? We'll see...
  • Andrew Raycroft was placed on unconditional waivers, which means the Leafs will buyout the final year of his contract.
  • Four Flames re-signed today: Daymond Langkow, Craig Conroy, Eric Nystrom, Curtis McElhinney. Not one bit surprised that they re-signed Langkow and Conroy. Yesterday's moves likely made room for this.
  • Dallas has re-signed Loui Eriksson to a 2-year deal. He was set to become an RFA on Tuesday. I really think he's gonna breakout this year...
  • (UPDATE 3:20 CST) ESPN.com is reporting that Brian Campbell has told GM Doug Wilson that he will not return to San Jose, and will head back towards the Atlantic.
  • Hockeybuzz.com is reporting that Jagr and the Rangers are close to a deal... no surprise there.
  • Jeff Carter has finally re-signed with the Flyers... for $15 mil over 3 years. Wow.. a streaky forward who only tallied 53 points last season is getting $5 mil per season?? If you ask me, that's a bit too much!

In the shoes of... Penguins' Ray Shero

1. Any optimism with the main UFA’s??
Well, we’re playing a wait-and-see approach. It appears the big three will be testing the market on July 1. We felt we put our best offer on the table to Marian. He feels content on fielding other offers, and we respect that decision. I hope he’ll still consider us next Tuesday. As for Brooks and Ryan… I really don’t know. You can’t really have too much optimism at this point. We’ve been talking with Brooks and his agent over the last couple days, and things seem to be progressing. Ryan looks like he won’t be returning. He’ll be receiving a payday we just can’t afford. But hopefully, if we can’t sign those three guys, we’ll find a way to bring a couple other players to complement Sid and Geno.
2. How close were you to trading Malkin last week??
Uh… not close at all. I never considered it. I received phone calls from Edmonton and Los Angeles prior to the draft, and we’re just not interested in trading away one of the special talents in this league. We’re very optimistic that we’ll be able to agree to an extension by September. I think those rumors you saw on the internet were just made up by some guy named Eklund. Geno will be Penguin for a long time.
3. Are there any riffs between Therien and the players??
We’re aware that he’s not the most likeable guy in the league. That’s probably why Roberts and Malone won’t be coming back. But I think we’ll find enough guys that enjoy playing for him, and we’ll move on. Michel will be our coach next year… no doubt!

Thursday Tidbits

  • The salary cap roof will be at $56.7 million this season... the floor will be at $40.7
  • Ducks d-man Scott Niedermayer has told GM Brian Burke that he will return for the final year of his contract.
  • Calgary has waived Rhett Warrener, Anders Eriksson, and Marcus Nilson. I assume this was a move to clear some space to re-sign Langkow and maybe Conroy.
  • UFA forward Martin Straka has reportedly signed with a team in Czech Republic. His agent says the story is not true. I expected him to leave the league if he didn't return to New York.
  • It is looking more and more like Mats Sundin will be signing after July 1, leaving Toronto with no compensation. Montreal and New York seem to be the only teams in this hunt. Earlier in the day, the Toronto Sun reported that GM Cliff Fletcher had given Sundin a weekend deadline to make his decision. Things could end nasty for Sundin in Toronto, espescially if he lands in Montreal.
  • TSN is reporting that goalie Jose Theodore will test the market on Tuesday. I guess the Sens, Kings, and Blackhawks are licking their chops!!

In the shoes of... Mike Gillis

Over the next week or so, I'm going to pretend that I'm in the shoes of some GM's who are under pressure this off-season... Today is Canucks GM Mike Gillis.

1. Markus Naslund’s status
We haven’t decided yet what we'll do. We would certainly like him back, but we haven’t had too many conversations with his agent. As an organization, we’re expecting him to test the market on Tuesday. You know, with Linden retiring, we need Naslund not only on the ice, but in the locker room. He’s been our captain for a long time. He’s been a big part of our hockey club. But if today was July 1, I’m not too optimistic he’d be coming back to Vancouver.
2. What’s the deal with the Sedins??
There is no deal… they’re staying. They both have one year left on their contracts, so we’re going to try to work out deals to keep them here for the long haul.
3. Do you see yourself making a major move once July 1 hits??
We need to make a splash, that’s for sure. Our depth up front is pretty thin, so we need to bring in some guys who know how to score. We’re going to go after Demitra for sure, maybe Hossa. But we may be better off signing 2 or 3 guys with $8 million rather than spend all of that on Marian. Another player we could go after is Ryder from Montreal. I think he’ll fit in well here. No matter who we sign, they’ll need to help us get back to the postseason.

Tuesday Tidbits

  • Kyle Wellwood and Andrew Raycroft were placed on waivers today by the Leafs. This one kind of caught me off guard. I expected Raycroft to be moved in some sort this summer. He just doesn't fit in in Toronto. Wellwood was surprising, though. He still has an upside. A shock that the Leafs gave up on him so quickly. Maybe these moves signal a bigger move coming in the near future?
  • Yesterday, Andrew Ladd re-signed with the Blackhawks. I think he'll be key for the 'Hawks making the playoffs. A solid 3rd-liner who's good on the PK.
  • Tuomo Ruutu, who was traded for Ladd, re-signed in Carolina. I think this is the beginning of the end of Erik Cole in Carolina.
  • Marc Denis was placed on waivers by the Lightning today. No Surprise... he's been a total sieve since he came up with the Jackets.
  • Tampa Bay officially introduced ESPN analyst Barry Melrose as their new head coach today. Rick Tocchet will be his main assistant.
  • Joe Sakic will delay his decision to return until after July 1st. This kind of hand-cuffs the Avs. They don't what to plan for, financially, for the free agent frenzy. I think it would be the ultimate slap in the face if he retires in late July... we'll see.
  • Gary Roberts said today he will return to the NHL, but not with Pittsburgh. Not a surprise. You could see this coming when he was benched at the beginning of the finals.
  • UPDATE (7:05 CST) Darcy Tucker has been bought out by the Leafs.... wow! I guess their quest for John Tavares has begun with today's actions....

More to come when it becomes available...

In the shoes of... Bryan Murray

Over the next week or so, I'm going to pretend that I'm in the shoes of some GM's who are under pressure this off-season... Today is Senators GM Bryan Murray.

1. Goaltending situation??
Yeah, this is a tough one to swallow for us. Emery didn’t handle losing the starting job too well, and became a big distraction. And now with Ellis signed down in Nashville, and Theodore and Huet looking to re-sign with their respective clubs, I think we’re in kind of a dicey situation. I think you’ll see us go out and sign a veteran to backup Gerber, and ride Gerber as long as he can take us. He’ll certainly have to play better than he did after Christmas last year. So, I think we’ll be heading in that direction… nothing too drastic.
2. What personnel changes are ahead??
Well, for one, the big three are going to stay intact… that’s for sure. We fielded calls for Spezza over the weekend, and we didn’t receive an offer that would’ve made our club better. We recently locked up Kelly, so he’ll continue to be main part of our team. Changes wise, Vermette may have played his last game with us. Inconsistency is his biggest problem. One game, he’s a force out there; the next game, you’re wondering if he even showed to the rink that night. So, that’s one move to look at. Then there’s Andrej on the blueline. We definitely need to upgrade back there, and may use him as bait to bring in some better talent. I don’t think you’ll see us do anything major in the next couple weeks, but we’re sure going to do the best we can to improve this hockey team.
3. How do the Sens rebound from last year’s 2nd half collapse??
I think we’ll be fine. Injuries really hurt us. Alfie and Dany were kind of in and out of the lineup during that stretch. I think we resolved the chemistry issues (Emery). We just have to put last year behind us and take the positives from it and move on. We’re in such a tough division. Boston and Montreal keep getting better, and Buffalo and Toronto always put up a good fight. So we’ll have our hands full this fall, but I expect this club to be in the thick of things next spring.

In the shoes of... Doug Wilson

Over the next week or so, I'm going to pretend that I'm in the shoes of some GM's who are under pressure this off-season... Today is Sharks GM Doug Wilson.

1. Brian Campbell
The top priority for me is Campbell. I’m aware that I can’t let him test the market on July 1, because there’s going to be a team out there who offers him something he can’t turn down. He made an impact in our late season run to claim the Pacific Division. If we can’t get him to come back to San Jose, we’ll have some work to do on the blueline. Rivet and Vlasic are solid back there, but we need a top tier defenseman to lead the pack. Wade Redden could be a possibility… but he’ll be asking for more money than he’s worth. I think a more reasonable player for us to sign is Michal Rozsival. He’s a rising defenseman who’s made an impact with the Blueshirts since the lockout. Another possibility would be Mark Streit from Montreal. I know he’s kind of a ‘system guy’, but he would definitely give us a boost on the power play. Plus he’ll be fairly cheap!
2. What to do with Marleau, Cheechoo, and Thornton??
If we can’t bring back Campbell, we’ll keep Marleau and Thornton, and try to build around them. If Brian decides to stay, you may see Pat or Joe in a different sweater this fall. I don’t know what kind of a future Cheech has with us. He had a great season after the lockout, but his production has gone downhill since then. We’re listening to offers. There are a few teams that would like to acquire him. Nashville has expressed interest, same with Pittsburgh. But right now, we’re trying to re-sign Brian, and we’ll go from there.
3. McLellan > Wilson??
We feel very comfortable with Todd behind the bench. You know, Ronny needed a change of scenery. We could never live up to expectations in the postseason with him calling the shots. It seemed like the only team we could beat in the playoffs was Nashville. We felt the boys needed a new voice in the locker room. For his sake, the organization wishes him the best of luck in Toronto. He was a great coach here, and got us a few steps closer to our ultimate goal. Hopefully Todd can finish off that goal. He has some championship experience as an assistant with Detroit, and we’re thrilled to have him as our coach.

Canadiens
GM Bob Gainey will be traveling to Sweden this week to talk to Mats Sundin firsthand. I honestly don't understand this whole fiasco. I think Gainey is better off looking at signing Hossa or Campbell. And I think Toronto is crazy for letting their nemesis talk to Sundin before July 1.
Rangers
The Sharks have given the Rangers' brass the OK to start talking to Brian Campbell. This is huge... if New York could re-sign Jagr and get Campbell, the Cup could be in the bright lights of New York this time next summer.
Penguins
Marian Hossa, as you know by now, will be testig free agent waters on July 1. Hossa reportedly rejected a 7 yr, $49 mil deal from Shero and company in Pittsburgh.
Panthers
With the trade of Jokinen, Florida's offense looks pretty bleak. So look for the Panthers to try to sign a couple goal scorers as free agency begins.
Wild
Minnesota was very close to acquiring Jokinen on Friday night. They reportedly offered their 1st round pick along with Pierre-Marc Bouchard... but it wasn't quite enough.
Canucks
Gills is listening to offers from other teams for the Sedins... that's definietly something to keep an eye on. Also, Vancouver was in on the Mike Cammalleri sweepstakes, but couldn't end up acquiring him. GM Mike Gillis offered the #10 pick, and also wanted a prospect along with Cammalleri in return. LA didn't like that idea, and traded him to Calgary.
Devils
Sergei Brylin and GM Lou Lamoriello aren't progressing on contract talks. If nothing is resolved by July 1, Brylin will become a UFA.
Senators
Wade Redden has put his house up for sale... he's obviously ready to say goodbye to Ottawa.

Draft Roundup

The future of the NHL couldn't be brighter right now. I can literally see most of the 1st round picks being future all-stars. The depth of this draft was ridiculous.

Stamkos is obviously going to be a star alongside Lecavalier and St. Louis, possibly as soon as this season. Los Angeles shored up the blueline for years to come by drafting Doughty and Teubert in the first 13 picks. They'll go along with Jack Johnson and Thomas Hickey in SoCal. Bogosian and Pietrangelo will fit in well and make impacts in Atlanta and St. Louis, respectively. I think the Jackets did very well last night. They traded for RJ Umberger (although costly), and picked the prospect that many scouts think have the highest ceiling in this draft. Filatov will be excellent in Columbus. Nashville also did well... Colin Wilson and Chet Pickard are best friends, and both will make an impact in the Music City within the next couple of years. I mean, the list can go on and on...

Who was the steal of the draft in my mind?? Luca Sbisa.. d-man selected by Philly at #19. He's going to be a big-time shut down defenseman with the Flyers. Gary Bettman and the NHL should be proud of what they'll have in a few years. This league was already loaded with young superstars, and it picked up alot more in this weekend's entry draft!

Friday Night Trade Tracker

6:01 CST
Flames: Mike Cammalleri (from LA)
Kings: #12 overall (from ANA)
Ducks: #17 overall (from CGY) and #28 overall (from LA)
RLD opinion: Great trade by Flames. Cammalleri will fit in well in Calgary. The Kings will be able to get another solid player at #12 in addition to #2. Anaheim just keeps filling the cupboard...
-----
6:08 CST
Canadiens: Alex Tanguay, '08 5th rounder
Flames: #25 overall, '09 2nd rounder
RLD opinion: Calgary is obviously the winner so far in tonight's draft. Yes, they slip back 8 spots in the 1st round. But they get rid of Tanguay's large cap number and now have room to re-sign Langkow and maybe Conroy. I have a feeling Montreal made a bad choice here. I really can't him doing too well there... but we'll see.
-----
6:18 CST
Coyotes: Olli Jokinen
Panthers: Nick Boynton, Keith Ballard, and #49 overall
RLD opinion: Wow.. great trade by the Coyotes' brass. I'm surprised Florida only received 2 defenseman and a 2nd rounder. The west just keeps getting better and better.
-----
6:55 CST
Maple Leafs: #5 overall
Islanders: #7 overall and conditional draft picks
RLD opinion: I think the Leafs paid a high price to draft d-man Luke Schenn, so we'll see how that pans out in the next few years.
-----
7:08 CST
Blue Jackets: R.J. Umberger, '08 4th rounder
Flyers: #19 overall, '08 3rd rounder
RLD opinion: Umberger is a nice piece to Columbus' puzzle to make a push for the playoffs next year. He had a great playoff run with the Flyers this spring. Philly opened up some room to re-sign RFA Jeff Carter. Good trade on both sides...
-----
7:19 CST
Predators: #7 overall
Islanders: #9 overall, '08 2nd rounder
RLD opinion: Great trade by the Preds... Colin Wilson will fit in well in Nashville. On the Isles' front, they're stocking up more picks.
-----
7:55 CST
Sabres: #12 overall
Kings: #13 overall, '09 3rd rounder
RLD opinion: Not much of a price for the Sabres to jump up and select defenseman Tyler Myers from Kelowna of the WHL. Buffalo really needs defensemen in their organization. Kings GM Dean Lombardi is doing a good job loading up on picks for their future.
-----
8:11 CST
Senators: #15 overall
Predators: #18 overall, '09 3rd rounder
-----
8:52 CST
Capitals: #21 overall
Devils: #23 overall, '08 2nd rounder
-----
9:07 CST
Wild: #23 overall
Devils: #24 overall, '09 3rd rounder
-----
9:35 CST
Capitals: #27 overall
Flyers: Steve Eminger, '08 3rd rounder
RLD opinion: Philly picks up a solid, gritty defenseman in Eminger who still has some upside. Washington was able to get back into the 1st round and take bruising d-man John Carlson from the U.S.
-----
9:40 CST
Coyotes: #28 overall
Ducks: 2 '08 2nd rounders (35 & 39)

Final pre-draft rumors

- Nashville's 104.5 The Zone, the radio home of the Predators, is reporting that the Preds are working on a deal to acquire either Marleau or Cheechoo from the Sharks. The #15 pick and some of the Preds' young d-men would be involved.
- Mats Sundin's negotiating rights are reportedly being shopped to Montreal for the #25 pick. This would be huge... it would be like Derek Jeter being traded to the Red Sox. We'll see where that goes in the next hour or so.
- Sens GM Bryan Murray said today that he will NOT trade Spezza, and intends on building around him, Heatley, and Alfredsson for the coming years.
- Ray Emery and Dan Cloutier were waived by the Senators and Kings, respectively, today. Not surprising one bit. You knew Emery was out the door in Ottawa, and Cloutier obviously didn't work out in LA. They'll re-surface somewhere else as quality backups...

Preds make moves

1. Chris Mason has been traded to the St. Louis Blues for a 4th Rd. pick in this weekend's draft.
2. David Poile has reach an agreement to re-sign Dan Ellis. No word yet on how much for how long.
This is kind of bittersweet for Pred Nation. Mason was a fan favorite, even though he struggled last year. Great in the community and in the locker room. I had the privilege of meeting him a few times, and he is just the classiest and nicest guy you could imagine.
The good news, though, is that re-signing Ellis sures up the goaltending situation. I think getting Ellis back to Nashville was a pretty big priority for the Preds, considering how well he played in the playoffs and throughout the season.
Pekka Rinne will finally get his chance to play with this team. He's spot-started a couple times in the past, but has always been a mainstay in AHL Milwaukee. He has a bright future, and is ready to take on the NHL.

Trade winds are blowing...

Over the last couple days, the trade winds have increased rapidly, like a category 4-5 hurricane in the Atlantic. There's so many names tossed around, with many realistic possibilities. It almost feels like tomorrow (or today) is the Trade Deadline with the NHL Draft as a special treat.

This happens every year... names get mentioned in countless rumors by analysts and sources in the days leading up to the draft. Last year, Patrick Marleau and Olli Jokinen were the 2 premier names being mentioned. This year is the same song, but different dance, as you can add Malkin and Spezza, among others, to the list. With the skimpy free agent market next month, I think more teams than usual will take chances on trades to try to fill their needs.

Now I'll look at the players who could potentially get traded tomorrow or next week:
Olli Jokinen, Panthers
I think the time has finally come for Olli to depart South Florida. The fact that Jacques Martin is still in the organization makes this possibility even greater. He'd likely bring in some quality talent to the Panthers for the future. You're looking at a 1st round pick, top 6 forward, and a solid defenseman. I think the Flames may take a chance on him, and the Canadiens will definitely take a gander. Montreal might be able to offer Higgins, Komisarek and a 1st rounder; Calgary could offer Regehr, Tanguay, a 1st rounder, and some additional picks later on in the draft. Minnesota and St. Louis are also teams to watch in this race.
Patrick Marleau, Sharks
GM Doug Wilson will be meeting with Brian Campbell's agent tomorrow morning to discuss a deal for Campbell to go back to the Bay Area. If something happens quickly with Campbell and the Sharks, you could see Wilson unload Marleau in the afternoon. But I wouldn't expect Marleau to be traded tomorrow. Probably around July 1st is a better bet as they get a better feel of what Campbell plans on doing. They obviously can't fit Campbell under the cap with Marleau's hefty $6.3 million salary and some RFA's to sign. I think the Sharks would like to ship Marleau out East. If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised to see Montreal, Toronto, and both New Yorks to get into the mix.
Evgeni Malkin, Penguins
I would be truly stunned if Ray Shero traded Geno. I know there's been rampant rumors about him going to LA, but seriously... can you really see the Pens unloading Malkin as he's heading into the prime of his career?? Malkin has said that he intends to stay in Pittsburgh for the long haul. He's due to become a RFA at the end of next season.
Jason Spezza, Senators
The more I hear the Spezza rumors, the more I believe them. If he's traded, I think it'll be tomorrow because Bryan Murray is desperately trying to jump into the Top 10 of tomorrow's (tonight's) draft, and could use Spezza as bait. Murray's looking to make a splash and send a message this off-season. Potential Spezza deal?? To LA for Cammalleri, #2 pick and a future high draft pick. Cammalleri is no Spezza, but he's as solid a hockey player as they come. They'd also be able to get a bonafide defenseman (Doughty, Bogosian), which the organization is in dire need of. That would also open the door and some cap space to possibly grab Jokinen. Ottawa is certainly the team to watch tomorrow, trades wise.
Bryan McCabe, Maple Leafs
McCabe has definitely outlasted his stay in the hockey hotbed of the world. Numerous reports state that McCabe has said that he'd be willing to waive his no-trade clause. The team rumored to be looking to acquire him are the Islanders. New York's other team really needs to boost that blueline. If they could get McCabe and one of the 4 d-men with their #5 overall pick, they could build a foundation in front of DiPietro. Other teams on McCabe's radar could be the Rangers and the Lightning.

Here are some other players who very well could get traded tomorrow (today): Glen Murray, Joni Pitkanen, Erik Cole, Jonathan Cheechoo, and Andrej Meszaros.

Thoughts on the Jamal Mayers trade:
I think Mayers will fit in nicely in Toronto. It's his home town, and potentially could play well on a line with Darcy Tucker. As a Preds fan, I'm glad Mayers is out of the Central Division. He's one of those pesky players that finds a way to beat you. Good acquisition by Toronto...

Enjoy the Draft!!

Blue Jackets
Patrick Marleau has become Columbus' #1 target to be the man to play alongside Rick Nash. Trade talks haven't become serious between the Jackets and Sharks, but it is believed that Nikolai Zherdev and draft picks would be going the other way.
Penguins
This of course was made public yesterday, but Ryan Malone intends to test the free agent waters on July 1 instead of getting his rights traded to another team (i.e. Columbus).
Ducks
Anaheim management has given Scott Niedermayer more time to make a decision on whether to return or not.
'Canes/Preds
Nashville traded Darcy Hordichuk's signing rights to Carolina for a 5th round pick in 2009. If he doesn't sign with the 'Canes, Carolina will receive Nashville's 5th-rounder in '10.
Maple Leafs
Pavel Kubina's no-trade clause expires tomorrow, so expect him to be traded tomorrow at some point. Possible suitors?? Sharks, Lightning, and Hurricanes to name a few...
Capitals
Cristobal Huet and the Caps are progressing on contract talks... it looks like Washington will be able to keep Huet.

Bruins
UFA Blake Wheeler has come to an agreement to sign with Boston
Blue Jackets
The Jackets are apparently on the verge of acquiring the negotiating rights to Ryan Malone from the Penguins. Don't be surprised if the Pens throw Orpik in the deal also...
Flames
The Calgary Sun is reporting that Daymond Langkow has told Flames GM Darryl Sutter that he will stay and will try to work out a contract soon. Langkow is set to become an UFA July 1.
Thrashers
Atlanta re-signed backup goaltender Johan Hedberg to a 2-year extension yesterday.
Avalanche
Joe Sakic is still in limbo of whether to return this year or not. The decision will likely come after July 1, as he and his family will be on vacation in Croatia til then. The Avs would like to know Sakic's plans ASAP, but won't rush him...
Senators
Andrej Meszaros could very well be trade bait to land Glen Murray from Boston. Meszaros will be a RFA this summer. Also, the Sens are trying everything they can to deal disgruntled goalie Ray Emery. In the coming days, he'll either be traded, or bought out by GM Bryan Murray.
Canucks
New GM Mike Gillis is saying that the last player he will trade is Roberto Luongo, and he's willing to trade the Canuck's 1st round pick (#10) for NHL-ready talent.

The Goal Horn: A lost art form...

Every die-hard hockey has a quirky love for the game, and I’m revealing mine: The goal horn. It can put the cherry on top when you’re team scores, or can make you feel worse when the opposing scores a big goal. It’s truly a lost art form in the league.

Penguins
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that Evgeni Malkin is close to an extension with the Pens. The extension will happen after July 1, and Malkin is wanting a 5-6 year deal.
Panthers
Olli Jokinen's name has surfaced in many trade rumors, especially to St. Louis or Minnesota. Florida is supposedly looking for a 1st round pick in return. The Panthers do not have a 1st-rounder in next week's draft.
Coyotes
Radim Vrbata will test the free agent market after spending just one season with Phoenix. He will likely be getting a big pay raise.
Lightning
Vincent Lecavalier has stated publicly that he wishes to remain in Tampa long-term... "I like Tampa and I want to be in Tampa for a long time."
Senators
Wade Redden is most likely going to test free agent waters on July 1. A possibile destination?? Florida. He and Panthers GM Jacques Martin have a good friendship.
Wild
Brian Rolston has his house up for sale in Minneapolis. Is that a sign of things to come?? Rolston has said that he hopes to stay with the Wild, but is willing to see what other teams are interested.
Thrashers
Bobby Holik is not returning to Atlanta... no surprise. And the following are candidates to fill the Thrashers' coaching position: Brad McCrimmon, John Anderson, Paul Maurice, John Tortorella, and Joel Quenneville. A decision is likely to come soon...
Avalanche
Jose Theodore will most likely stay in Colorado as a deal is imminent.
Rangers
The Rangers are looking at rookie free agent Blake Wheeler. Wheeler, former 1st round pick of the Coyotes in 2004, opted for free agency instead of signing with PHX.

Afternoon Rumors

Since the free agency pool is thinner than usual this summer, teams will be looking more at trades to improve/fill their needs...
Jason Spezza
This is a name I see talked about all over the internet. Reports out of Ottawa say he is a growing distraction as a lot doubt his desire to play with the Sens. Ottawa could potentially get a lot in return for Spezza. Edmonton, Columbus, and Nashville are teams I can see making a run at him in the days before the draft. The Sens will be looking to acquire some stud defenseman or maybe even a goaltender in return for Spezza.
Evgeni Malkin
I do not want to believe the rumors out on a possible Malkin trade. But you can't ignore them. He will be a RFA after next season, and is expected to ask for an outrageous contract ($10 mil/yr). Pittsburgh may not be able to pay him that much, as they also need to lock up Fleury and Staal. He would bring many future pieces to Pittsburgh if Pens GM Ray Shero decides to put him on the block. I just don't see it, though. I believe he'll sign a long-term contract in Pittsburgh, especially if they let Hossa go into free agency. Still something to keep an eye on...
Predators D-men
GM David Poile has some decisions to make in the next week or 2 regarding his RFA d-men. Suter and Weber are the main ones he'd like to lock up, while Ville Koistinen and Kevin Klein could be attractive to other GMs. Supposedly either Suter or Weber is going to go, and it'll be before July 1. I think Suter will be the odd man out, and could be used to maybe acquire a Spezza or Cammalleri. Poile is certainly looking to boost the offense this summer.
Roberto Luongo
I know it seems impossible that Vancouver would give up Luongo, but it's something to think about. During an intermission of a game on HNIC this spring, the Hot Stove reported that Luongo doesn't get along with Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault, and maybe welcome a trade. Luongo kind of fell apart down the stretch, making the thoughts of him disgruntled with Vigneault much more interesting. I doubt the Canucks will move him, but they could get some much-needed offense in return, maybe for Spezza + a draft pick?? Hmmm...

Other rumors include Vincent Lecavalier possibly wanting out of Tampa to go to Montreal, and Olli Jokinen finally getting traded by the Panthers in the near future.

Todd McLellan will be behind the bench for San Jose this October. He was an assistant for Detroit before this hire.

So... McLellan is a better coach than Ron Wilson?? I think the Sharkies would've been better off with Tortorella.. but that's just me.
