An interesting 3-way deal has gone down between the Oilers, Kings, and ‘Canes. The main players to the deal are Patrick O’Sullivan (to EDM), Erik Cole (to CAR), and Justin Williams (to LA).
For Carolina:
The Hurricanes made a good move here by re-acquiring Erik Cole from the Edmonton Oilers. To be honest, I thought Cole was going to be better off in Edmonton. But things didn’t work out there, and the ‘Canes were also effected as Eric Staal’s production has taken a hit. I think Carolina did well here…
For Edmonton:
Well, the Oilers made a move and it’s not the one that Oiler fans wanted (Jay-Bo). But Patrick O’Sullivan is an interesting player. He’s streaky, but has an upside and can fit in their system. He’s a potential linemate to Ales Hemsky. They also acquired unknown draft picks from Carolina. I’ll take a wait-and-see approach here.
For Los Angeles:
Justin Williams is going to LA, but he won’t play anytime soon as he is on the shelf with a broken hand. So it’s fair to assume that they’re thinking about Williams for next year. I think he could turn out as a good pickup for the Kings.
Who wins this trade??
Right now, Carolina… they get someone who’s proven they can play well in Raleigh. I know he was a well-liked guy there, and was a good go-to guy for Staal (when healthy). Nonetheless, there’s potential for all 3 teams to benefit from this deal, one of the more interesting ones on this deadline day.
Trade Impact Level: 7/10
