1. Jarome Iginla, CGY (Age: 32)
’08-‘09 Stats: 82 GP, 35 G, 54 A, 89 PTS, -2, 37 PIM
3-Year Average: 78 GP, 41 G, 52 A, 93 PTS, +12, 53 PIM
Note: The heart and soul of the Flames should put up dynamite stats once again with Olli Jokinen centering his line. He has recorded at least 89 points in each of the past three seasons.
2. Martin St. Louis, TBL (Age: 34)
’08-‘09 Stats: 82 GP, 30 G, 50 A, 80 PTS, +4, 14 PIM
3-Year Average: 82 GP, 33 G, 56 A, 89 PTS, -4, 23 PIM
Note: St. Louis is perennially one of the safest fantasy picks. He has only missed two games over the past 6 seasons and has average 82 points per season in that span.
3. Patrick Kane, CHI (Age: 20)
’08-‘09 Stats: 80 GP, 25 G, 45 A, 70 PTS, -2, 42 PIM
3-Year Average: 81 GP, 23 G, 48 A, 71 PTS, -4, 47 PIM**
Note: Kane avoided a sophomore slump in ’08-’09, but now faces a major distraction this offseason. He has 80-90 point potential but the ramifications from his cab incident are yet to be determined.
4. Martin Havlat, MIN (Age: 28)
’08-‘09 Stats: 81 GP, 29 G, 48 A, 77 PTS, +29, 30 PIM
3-Year Average: 57 GP, 21 G, 32 A, 53 PTS, +16, 27 PIM
Note: The injury-prone Havlat set career highs in assists and points in ’08-’09 as he was finally able to put a full season together with the Blackhawks. Expect more of the same in Minnesota if he can stay healthy.
5. Corey Perry, ANA (Age: 24)
’08-‘09 Stats: 78 GP, 32 G, 40 A, 72 PTS, +10, 109 PIM
3-Year Average: 77 GP, 26 G, 31 A, 57 PTS, +11, 91 PIM
Note: Perry topped 30 goals and 40 assists for the first time in his career, in addition to piling up 100 PIM for the 2nd straight season.
6. Marian Gaborik, NYR (Age: 27)
’08-‘09 Stats: 17 GP, 13 G, 10 A, 23 PTS, +3, 2 PIM
3-Year Average: 47 GP, 28 G, 26 A, 54 PTS, +11, 35 PIM
Note: Gaborik is one of the most skilled offensive players in the world, but he is always hurt. He was on pace to break the century mark in points in ’08-’09 before a groin injury ended his season.
7. Bobby Ryan, ANA (Age: 22)
’08-‘09 Stats: 64 GP, 31 G, 26 A, 57 PTS, +13, 33 PIM
3-Year Average: 44 GP, 18 G, 16 A, 34 PTS, +6, 20 PIM**
Note: The 2nd overall pick in 2005 led all rookies with 31 goals in ’08-’09. Ryan started the season in the AHL but it did not take him long to make an impact in Anaheim (34 GP, 34 PTS from November 15th to January 31st).
8. Brad Boyes, STL (Age: 27)
’08-‘09 Stats: 82 GP, 33 G, 39 A, 72 PTS, -20, 26 PIM
3-Year Average: 61 GP, 27 G, 23 A, 50 PTS, -6, 17 PIM
Note: Boyes was a force for the Blues once again as he tallied 35 points on the man advantage and scored 11 GWG in ’08-’09. His -20 plus-minus rating, dead last on the Blues, is somewhat alarming.
9. Daniel Alfredsson, OTT (Age: 36)
’08-‘09 Stats: 79 GP, 24 G, 50 A, 74 PTS, +7, 24 PIM
3-Year Average: 61 GP, 27 G, 23 A, 50 PTS, -6, 17 PIM
Note: Alfredsson saw a big drop off in goals a year ago after finding the back of the net 40 times in ’07-’08. He still had 21 multi-point games in ’08-’09, though.
10. Shane Doan, PHX (Age: 32)
’08-‘09 Stats: 82 GP, 31 G, 42 A, 73 PTS, +5, 72 PIM
3-Year Average: 78 GP, 29 G, 40 A, 69 PTS, -2, 68 PIM
Note: Doan has been the one constant on a bad Phoenix team over the years. He has scored at least 27 goals in each of the past five seasons and recorded his 2nd straight 70 point season in ’08-’09.
11. Alexei Kovalev, OTT (Age: 36)
’08-’09 Stats: 78 GP, 26 G, 39 A, 65 PTS, -5, 74 PIM
3-Year Average: 78 GP, 23 G, 39 A, 62 PTS, -2, 74 PIM
Note: Kovalev will be motivated after leaving Montreal for Canadian-rival Ottawa. He has accumulated 28 PPG and 51 PPA over the past two seasons.
12. David Backes, STL (Age: 25)
’08-’09 Stats: 82 GP, 31 G, 23 A, 54 PTS, -3, 165 PIM
3-Year Average: 68 GP, 18 G, 18 A, 36 PTS, -3, 100 PIM
Note: Backes had a major breakout year in ’08-’09, as he had never before recorded 20 goals or assists in a single season. He really got hot down the stretch (19 GP, 20 PTS).
13. Ales Hemsky, EDM (Age: 26)
’08-’09 Stats: 72 GP, 23 G, 43 A, 66 PTS, +1, 32 PIM
3-Year Average: 70 GP, 19 G, 45 A, 64 PTS, -5, 35 PIM
Note: Hemsky is consistent, recording a point in 45 of his 72 GP in ’08-’09. He doesn’t put the puck in the net much on the power play (4 PPG in ’08-’09), but he has 104 PPA over the past four seasons (291 GP).
14. Devin Setoguchi, SJS (Age: 22)
’08-’09 Stats: 81 GP, 31 G, 34 A, 65 PTS, +16, 25 PIM
3-Year Average: 63 GP, 21 G, 20 A, 41 PTS, +11, 17 PIM**
Note: Setoguchi showed why he was a former top ten pick, tallying 30 goals and 30 assists in ’08-’09. He should put up similar numbers to a year ago in ’09-’10 playing on the top line that could feature Marleau and Thornton again.
15. Johan Franzen, DET (Age: 29)
’08-’09 Stats: 71 GP, 34 G, 25 A, 59 PTS, +21, 44 PIM
3-Year Average: 71 GP, 24 G, 19 A, 43 PTS, +18, 44 PIM
Note: ‘The Mule’ had a breakout year in ’08-’09, scoring 30 goals and topping 40 points for the first time in his career. With the changing landscape in Mo-Town (loss of Hudler, decline of Holmstrom), Franzen will be forced to pick up the slack even more.
16. Brian Gionta, MTL (Age: 30)
’08-’09 Stats: 81 GP, 20 G, 40 A, 60 PTS, +12, 32 PIM
3-Year Average: 75 GP, 22 G, 30 A, 52 PTS, +3, 38 PIM
Note: In the past three seasons, Gionta hasn’t come close to putting up the stats he did the year after the lockout (82 GP, 89 PTS in ’05-’06). He scored 24 PPG that year, compared to only 3 last season. Look for that number to increase threefold as he should be a main component on the PP for the Habs.
17. Joffrey Lupul, ANA (Age: 26)
’08-’09 Stats: 79 GP, 25 G, 25 A, 50 PTS, +1, 58 PIM
3-Year Average: 72 GP, 20 G, 21 A, 41 PTS, -9, 46 PIM
Note: Lupul makes his return to the team that drafted him 7th overall in 2005. He had the best season of his career with Anaheim in ’05-’06 (81 GP, 28 G, 53 PTS) and seems to be a good fit there.
18. Marian Hossa, CHI (Age: 30)
’08-’09 Stats: 74 GP, 40 G, 31 A, 71 PTS, +27, 63 PIM
3-Year Average: 82 GP, 33 G, 56 A, 89 PTS, -4, 23 PIM
Note: Hossa will miss the first few months of the ’09-’10 season due to shoulder surgery. When he returns, he should be on a lethal PP unit with Toews, Kane, Seabrook, and Campbell. He can still post 50-60 points (or more) in ’09-10.
19. Jamie Langenbrunner, NJD (Age: 33)
’08-’09 Stats: 81 GP, 29 G, 40 A, 69 PTS, +25, 56 PIM
3-Year Average: 76 GP, 22 G, 35 A, 57 PTS, +5, 50 PIM
Note: Langenbrunner set career highs in goals, assists, points, and +/- in ’08-’09. He should post great numbers once again as he will have to step up with the departure of Gionta.
20. Jason Pominville, BUF (Age: 26)
’08-’09 Stats: 82 GP, 20 G, 46 A, 66 PTS, -4, 18 PIM
3-Year Average: 82 GP, 27 G, 44 A, 71 PTS, +12, 23 PIM
Note: Pominville’s goal total has decreased by 7 in each of the past two seasons (34 G in ’06-’07). If Derek Roy can stay healthy, Pominville should benefit.
21. Nik Antropov, ATL (Age: 29)
’08-’09 Stats: 81 GP, 28 G, 31 A, 59 PTS, -14, 30 PIM
3-Year Average: 69 GP, 24 G, 25 A, 49 PTS, +1, 55 PIM
Note: Antropov tallied 20 goals and 50 points for the 2nd straight season in ’08-’09. He should do so once again playing with Kovalchuk and Little on Atlanta’s top line.
22. Phil Kessel, BOS (RFA) (Age: 21)
’08-’09 Stats: 70 GP, 36 G, 24 A, 60 PTS, +23, 16 PIM
3-Year Average: 74 GP, 22 G, 20 A, 42 PTS, +2, 19 PIM
Note: It is yet to be determined where Kessel will play this season, but my gut tells me that he will be somewhat of a fantasy bust in ’09-’10. He is a streaky player, as he followed up his 18-game point scoring streak in ’08-’09 with only 7 points in his next 20 games.
23. Teemu Selanne, ANA (Age: 39)
’08-’09 Stats: 65 GP, 27 G, 27 A, 54 PTS, -3, 36 PIM
3-Year Average: 58 GP, 29 G, 28 A, 57 PTS, +9, 42 PIM
Note: Selanne is a point-per-game guy when healthy, as he has recorded 171 points in 173 games over the past three seasons.
24. Mike Knuble, WSH (Age: 37)
’08-’09 Stats: 82 GP, 27 G, 20 A, 47 PTS, +5, 62 PIM
3-Year Average: 76 GP, 27 G, 25 A, 52 PTS, +1, 63 PIM
Note: Knuble scored 20 goals for the 6th straight season in ’08-’09. He should make it seven in his first season with the high-flying Capitals.
25. Steve Sullivan, NSH (Age: 35)
‘08-‘09 Stats: 41 GP, 11 G, 21 A, 32 PTS, +2, 30 PIM
3-Year Average: 33 GP, 17 G, 30 A, 47 PTS, +9, 25 PIM
Note: If I have to warn you about the risks of drafting Sullivan, then you have been living under a rock for the past two years. Expect 70-80 points from ‘Sully’ if he can stay healthy, though.
26. J.P. Dumont, NSH (Age: 31)
’08-’09 Stats: 82 GP, 16 G, 49 A, 65 PTS, +1, 20 PIM
3-Year Average: 81 GP, 22 G, 46 A, 68 PTS, +7, 27 PIM
Note: Dumont has tallied at least 60 points in each of his three seasons in Nashville. He should make it 4 for 4 in ’09-’10.
27. Michael Ryder, BOS (Age: 29)
’08-’09 Stats: 74 GP, 27 G, 26 A, 53 PTS, +28, 26 PIM
3-Year Average: 75 GP, 24 G, 24 A, 48 PTS, +0, 39 PIM
Note: Ryder rebounded nicely in ’08-’09 after the worst season of his career (70 GP, 14 G, 31 PTS in ’07-’08). He should post 50-60 points again this year.
28. Kris Versteeg, CHI (Age: 23)
‘08-‘09 Stats: 78 GP, 22 G, 31 A, 53 PTS, +15, 55 PIM
3-Year Average: 46 GP, 12 G, 17 A, 29 PTS, +7, 31 PIM**
Note: Versteeg was a pleasant surprise for the ‘Hawks in ’08-’09. His numbers may improve in ’09-’10 but his ceiling isn’t much higher than 55-60 points.
29. Blake Wheeler, BOS (Age: 23)
’08-’09 Stats: 81 GP, 21 G, 24 A, 45 PTS, +36, 46 PIM
3-Year Average: 81 GP, 21 G, 24 A, 45 PTS, +36, 46 PIM*
Note: Wheeler was very impressive in his rookie season, ranking 2nd in the NHL in plus-minus. He should crack the 50-point mark in his sophomore season.
30. Milan Hejduk, COL (Age: 33)
’08-’09 Stats: 82 GP, 27 G, 32 A, 59 PTS, -19, 16 PIM
3-Year Average: 80 GP, 30 G, 31 A, 61 PTS, +0, 32 PIM
Note: Hejduk had a dreadful -19 rating in ’08-’09, the only season of his career that he finished in the red in plus-minus. He did score 20 goals for the 9th straight season, though.
