Many hockey fans, including myself, would like to see a change in the current points system. As a Preds supporter, I hate when a Western Conference game goes to overtime, because of that oh-so-valuable extra point. And that’s the same with any other fan. Example: a Thrashers fan would hate it if the Senators and Lightning went to OT.
The most popular solution that has been tossed around is to dish out three points per game. A regulation win would be worth three points apiece, whereas an overtime/shootout victory will get you just two. The loser in extra time would still get a point. The tiebreaker at the end of the year would be total wins, followed by regulation wins. I’m a fan of this proposed system, and did some ‘research’ as to what the standings would look like if this was indeed how we handed out the points.
(Here are the current standings if you wanted to compare)
Key: Pts… (Reg. W – OTW – OTL)
EASTERN CONFERENCE
1. New Jersey Devils, 62… (17-5-1)
2. Washington Capitals, 61… (15-5-6)
3. Buffalo Sabres, 59… (17-3-2)
4. Pittsburgh Penguins, 60… (15-7-1)
5. Atlanta Thrashers, 50… (13-4-3)
6. Boston Bruins, 48… (10-6-6)
7. Ottawa Senators, 47… (11-5-4)
8. Philadelphia Flyers, 43… (12-3-1)
9. New York Rangers, 43… (12-2-3)
10. Toronto Maple Leafs, 42… (11-1-7)
11. Montreal Canadiens, 40… (7-8-3)

13. Tampa Bay Lightning, 39… (8-3-9)
14. New York Islanders, 38… (7-5-7)
15. Carolina Hurricanes, 24… (4-3-6)

1. Colorado Avalanche, 62… (16-3-6)
2. San Jose Sharks, 61… (16-3-7)
3. Chicago Blackhawks, 56… (13-7-3)
4. Los Angeles Kings, 59… (14-7-3)
5. Calgary Flames, 57… (15-4-4)
6. Vancouver Canucks, 55… (17-2-0)
7. Phoenix Coyotes, 54… (14-5-2)
8. Nashville Predators, 54… (13-6-3)
9. Detroit Red Wings, 51… (12-5-5)
10. Dallas Stars, 48… (10-4-10)
11. Edmonton Oilers, 45… (11-4-4)
12. Columbus Blue Jackets, 45… (11-3-6)
13. Minnesota Wild, 41… (8-7-3)
14. St. Louis Blues, 40… (9-4-5)
15. Anaheim Ducks, 39… (8-4-7)
I know the record books would be shattered if the NHL went to this system, but it’s for the better in my opinion. This eliminates all of the extra point crap, and rewards teams for getting the job done in 60 minutes. It would also create more excitement for the final two minutes of regulation in a tied game… what do you think?

There's no need to institute a 3 point system.
2 points for a win in regulation or overtime. 1 point for a shootout win. NO POINTS FOR LOSING.
It's ridiculous teams are getting what are essentially half-wins from losses.
you got it right there greg! quit rewarding teams for making to overtime! all this system would do is reward teams for making to a shootout instead which would make overtime completely stale!! GET RID OF POINTS FOR LOSES!!!
Got one better...go back to the way it was.
I think that'd be the wrong move. There's no urgency or excitement when teams are playing for a tie.
