Twas the night before...

The Free Agent Frenzy!!
Thanks to Chris from The Program!!

Twas the night before free agent frenzy,
And all through the house....
Not a creature was stirring...
Except for maybe a mouse.

You could hear GM's thinking.
Of what players will be there.
In the first day they will be seeking....
A solution beyond compare.

There was Gainey and Sather having fun
Jumping the damn gun again
Trading players seven times one,
With Sather stealing the golden hen.

As the night wears on.....
The GM's will all be asleep.
Thinking hey mon....
Who can we ditch, who to sign and who to keep.

Now word out of Calgary,
Says Jay-Bo will stay.
At 5 years and 33 million, they marry.
But will this really pay?

So what really will come next?
Seems all the thunder is being stolen.
This leaves me all perplexed.
Like Bob Gainey or even Owen Nolan.

So much money to spend.
Yet these owners cried poor.
They needed a bunch to mend.
Their financial portfolio and well their core.

So who will stay and who will go?
Tomorrow we will find out.
Will us pundits all eat some crow?
Or will we be right and be able to shout.

Twas the night before the frenzy.
And this blogger cannot wait.
To see what teams do.
And for which teams it may be too late.

To every hockey fan out there...I wish you and your team happy hunting on the Frenzy....may you get the players you need or clear the cap space you desire.

Jay-Bo officially signs with Calgary

Photobucket

The deal: 5 years, $33 million
Once GM Darryl Sutter traded for Bouwmeester’s rights on Saturday, it was just a matter of time before they came to terms. Tonight it’s official, and this signing currently makes the Flames the team to beat in the division. I assume Sutter will try his hardest to keep Jay-Bo and Phaneuf together. This means fellow d-men Robyn Regehr and Cory Sarich could be traded soon.

Jay-Bo has been hidden down in Miami his whole career, and some fans are probably wondering why everyone is making such a fuss about this guy. Well, there is a reason why he was on Team Canada in the ’06 Olympics, and has gone to the All-Star Game multiple times. It’s because he’s THAT good. The 6’4” defenseman is very good with the puck on his stick, has a solid shot from the point, and can put up better offensive numbers with a better team. He's considered one of the best all-around defenseman in the league. Bouwmeester truly has the potential to shine in Calgary!

Rangers trade Gomez to Habs

Photobucket
I’m laughing at Bob Gainey and the Canadiens right now… why?? Plan B for not getting Vincent Lecavalier was… Scott Gomez!? You read that correctly. New York has unloaded Gomez and his $7.35 cap hit to the Canadiens in exchange for RFA Christopher Higgins. There were some prospects sprinkled in. Here’s the official deal:

Canadiens get:
Scott Gomez
Prospects Tom Pyatt & Mike Busto
Rangers get:
Christopher Higgins

Doug Janik
Prospects Ryan McDonagh & Pavel Valentenko

Let’s look at this from the Rangers’ prospective. They got rid of Gomez’s hideous contract and picked up a solid package in return. Glen Sather did something smart!! Assuming the Rangers sign RFA Christopher Higgins, the Blueshirts did fabulous in this deal. Higgins shouldn't get more than $2.5 mil on his new contract. Ryan McDonagh, Montreal’s 1st round pick in 2007, was rated the 37th best prospect in the NHL by The Hockey News in their ‘Future Watch’ magazine this spring. Valentenko isn’t too shabby of a prospect, either.

This move obviously sets up another one coming in the next day or so. The Rangers suddenly become big players in the chases for the Sedins and Dany Heatley… or any other top free agent for that matter! If they trade for ‘Heater’, it would likely come later tonight. Higgins could be turned around and put in a package for Heatley… who knows. All I know is that Sather is up to something, and he’s not done yet.

As for the Canadiens… wha, wha, what happened??? Just because you have $33 million to spend doesn’t mean you just trade for a big salary like Gomez’s. Gomez has averaged a shade over 64 points in his 9 seasons in the league, and is coming off his worst season since the lockout. Along with the overpaid Alaskan came a couple prospects, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto, who both are a long way from reaching the NHL. Gainey's brain freeze is going to cause a stir for the wrong reasons in Montreal...

I don’t like this deal for the Habs… love it for the Rangers. Bravo to Mr. Sather for clearing room for a different big contract that’s worthy of its billing.

Tuesday News & Notes

We are less than 20 hours from the frenzy!!!

- Here are some notable RFA’s that did not receive qualifying offers yesterday:
Erik Christensen, ANA
Eric Perrin, ATL
Chris Thorburn, ATL
Cody McCormick, COL
Jiri Novotny, CBJ
Ole-Kristian Tollefson, CBJ
Steve Eminger, FLA
Anthony Stewart, FLA
Dan Fritsche, MIN
Fredrik Sjostrom, NYR
Brendan Bell, OTT
Marcel Goc, SJ
Lukas Kaspar, SJ
*These players will become UFA’s tomorrow at noon.

- New Jersey needed to re-sign Johnny Oduya, and they did so earlier today. He’s arguably been the Devils’ best defenseman the last 2 years with a combined +48 rating over that time. The deal is reportedly a 3-year deal worth $9 million. If GM Lou Lamoriello wouldn’t have signed him before tomorrow, he would have fielded many offers from other teams.

- Another defenseman that re-signed today was Rob Blake. The Sharks’ veteran blue-liner was a good pickup last year with his big shot on the power play. He racked up 45 points and a +15 rating. Blake made $5 million last year, but will be signed for $3.5 mil this season. He is well worth it…

- A pair of important RFA’s signed yesterday… both were key playoff performers. Chicago’s Dave Bolland received a long-term deal worth over $3 mil a season. He was a big part to the Hawks’ playoff run, tallying 12 points in 17 games. In Carolina, GM Jim Rutherford locked up Jussi Jokinen for 2 years at $1.7 mil a year. ‘The Finnisher’ seemed to be lost after being traded by Dallas, but was huge for the ‘Canes in the postseason. He scored 7 goals, including 3 game-winners and the game-tying goal in Game 7 at New Jersey. Good moves by both the Hurricanes & Blackhawks!

- The Penguins were busy yesterday, re-signing veterans Bill Guerin and Craig Adams. Guerin, a deadline pickup, was huge for that team in the playoffs… mostly in the locker room. Some Pens said he made a couple inspirational speeches in the finals that kept the confidence high. He’ll fit in nicely for a full season, especially for $2 million. Adams is a Dan Bylsma-type player, as his grit on the PK was valuable in the playoffs. He signed for $1.1 mil over 2 years.

- Rick Nash and his agent will meet (or have met) with Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson today, starting negotiations on an extension; Nash is entering the final year of his deal. Aside from Nash, players like Roberto Luongo, Patrick Kane, and Jonathan Toews are reportedly on the verge of signing long-term extensions with their respective clubs.

- The Red Wings will not be active in the free agent frenzy, says GM Ken Holland. The Wings have about $5.5 million to spend, 2nd least in the league. They have offered Marian Hossa a long-term deal averaging around $4 mil a season, but will he take it when he knows he can get at least $6 mil on the open market?? I doubt it…

- It’s looking like Minnesota G Josh Harding will be dealt this summer. The RFA netminder is looking for more playing time, and he won’t get it with Niklas Backstrom in front of him. Possible destinations for Harding would be Edmonton, St. Louis, Tampa Bay among others.

'Off-Season Central': PREDICTIONS!

Coverage in U.S.:
Wednesday, 2:00 - 6:00 ET on NHL Network

It’s June 30… AKA Christmas Eve. We are exactly 24 hours from the free agents hitting the open market. Here are my predictions of where all the top guys will sign. Last summer, I went 9/38 on my predictions… let’s hope this will be better!

1. Marian Hossa
Favorites: LA & VAN
Dark horse: NYR
Final Prediction: Vancouver (6 years, $39 million)

Note… I have a feeling Mike Gillis will be busy tomorrow given the Sedins are likely walking away. He’ll start with Hossa…

2. The Sedins
Favorites: MTL & TOR
Dark horse: LA
Final Prediction: Toronto (8 years, $48 million/each)

Note… If the Sedins leave VanCity, I’m convinced Brian Burke will table the highest offer.

3. Jay Bouwmeester
Favorite: CGY
Dark horse: VAN
Final Prediction: Calgary (5 years, $32.5 million)

Note… The Flames acquired Jay-Bo’s rights on Saturday; I’m confident a deal will get done by Noon ET tomorrow.

4. Marian Gaborik
Favorites: LA, NYR & VAN
Dark horse: MIN
Final Prediction: NY Rangers (5 years, $31.5 million)

Note… I have a hunch Rangers’ GM Glen Sather will be in on the big guns again. And he will land another star with another stupid lucrative offer.

5. Martin Havlat
Favorites: CHI, LA & WSH
Dark horse: ANA
Final Prediction: Chicago (5 years, $28 million)

Note… Havlat wants to re-sign, and the ‘Hawks want him back. It may take a couple days, but I still expect to see him in the Windy City this fall.

6. Mike Cammalleri
Favorite: ANA, MIN & NSH
Dark horse: NYI
Final Prediction: Minnesota (6 years, $31.5 million)

Note… 'Cammer' will have a wide variety of suitors come tomorrow, and the Wild could want him the most. They need a goal-scoring forward to go with Mikko Koivu.

7. Nikolai Khabibulin
Favorites: COL & EDM
Dark horse: Russia
Final Prediction: Edmonton (2 years, $11.5 million)

Note… This seems like a match for both sides. ‘Bulin still wants big money and the Oilers have to get a #1 goalie to truly compete for the division title.

8. Mike Komisarek
Favorites: MTL, NJ & NYI
Dark horse: WSH
Final Prediction: NY Islanders (4 years, $20 million)

Note… It’s entirely possible he goes somewhere not on the radar; but if he does, I’ll say the Isles land the big defenseman.

9. Brian Gionta
Favorites: BUF & VAN
Dark horse: TOR
Final Prediction: Buffalo (4 years, $16 million)

Note… This was my prediction on 6/21, and it hasn’t changed since. Gionta seems like a fit in Buffalo, and they need more punch up front.

10. Mattias Ohlund
Favorites: MTL & TOR
Dark horse: BUF
Final Prediction: Montreal (4 years, $18 million)

Note… Like I said a week ago, if the Habs can’t bring Komisarek back, Gainey will go after Ohlund in a heartbeat.

11. Alexei Kovalev
Favorites: EDM & MTL
Dark horse: WSH
Final Prediction: Montreal (3 years, $14.25 million)

Note… I have no idea where he’s going, so re-signing with Montreal is the pick. Kovalev could make us a wait a while before he signs.

12. Steve Sullivan
Favorites: NSH & NJ
Dark horse: WSH
Final Prediction: Nashville (2 years, $6 million)

Note… Nothing appears close between Sully & the Preds, so he could leave town tomorrow. But as of now, I can’t see him leaving.

13. Alex Tanguay
Favorites: LA, MTL & NYR
Dark horse: COL
Final Prediction: Los Angeles (4 years, $19 million)

Note… The Kings are supposed to make a ‘splash’ in the next couple days. Tanguay could be an under-the-radar ‘splash’.

14. Scott Niedermayer
Favorite: ANA
Dark horse: None
Final Prediction: Anaheim (1 year, $6 million)

Note… Niedermayer has committed to the NHL next year, but hasn’t officially signed a deal yet. It's most likely with the Ducks.

15. Nik Antropov
Favorite: None
Dark horses: ATL & MIN
Final Prediction: Atlanta (4 years, $16 million)

Note… Antropov’s asking price will have to come down if he signs anywhere; Sather said it’s ‘ridiculous’. The Thrashers could overpay to get him…

16. Martin Biron
Favorites: COL, EDM & NYI
Dark horse: BUF
Final Prediction: Colorado (3 years, $11.25 million)

Note… I think he’ll go to Colorado as they will make him their #1 man in net.

17. Francois Beauchemin
Favorites: ANA, MTL & TOR
Dark horse: NJ
Final Prediction: Toronto (4 years, $15 million)

Note… He’s been a really solid player in Anaheim since the lockout, and could follow Brian Burke to Toronto.

18. Saku Koivu
Favorites: ANA & MIN
Dark horse: SJ
Final Prediction: Anaheim (3 years, $13.2 million)

Note… Koivu is likely leaving Montreal. Anaheim is a legit possibility as he could unite with good friend Teemu Selanne.

19. Chad LaRose
Favorites: BUF, CAR & OTT
Dark horse: PIT
Final Prediction: Carolina (3 years, $6 million)

Note… I think the ‘Canes are smart enough not to let him get away.

20. Mike Knuble
Favorites: ANA, DET & WSH
Dark horse: CBJ
Final Prediction: Washington (2 years, $5.6 million)

Note… Knuble, 36, is still a very valuable forward that can score 20-30 goals a year. A trip to Washington could really help the Caps out.

21. Erik Cole
Favorites: CAR, DAL & NYI
Dark horse: NSH
Final Prediction: Dallas (3 years, $10.5 million)

Note… Carolina could be looking to go in another direction. If so, Cole’s best fit could be in Big D.

22. Johnny Oduya
Favorites: ATL, NJ & SJ
Dark horse: MIN
Final Prediction: New Jersey (4 years, $12 million)

Note… Oduya should be a hot commodity starting tomorrow, but I think the Devils should be able to lock him up.

23. Dwayne Roloson
Favorites: COL, EDM & NYI
Dark horse: TB
Final Prediction: NY Islanders (1 year, $2.7 million)

Note… If the Isles were smart, they’d get a solid goalie as insurance for the oft-injured DiPietro. Roli would be enough for them to at least compete in every game.

24. Rob Scuderi
Favorite: None
Dark horses: 10-15 teams
Final Prediction: San Jose (4 years, $13 million)

Note… Scuderi earned his dough in the last couple postseasons. He’ll be highly valued, and the Sharks may need him the most.

25. Bill Guerin
SIGNED W/ PITTSBURGH… 1 year, $2 million

Note… This is a perfect fit for Guerin as he can still score goals next to Crosby. Good decision by Shero & company to bring him back.

Other notable free agents:
Craig Anderson… Toronto Maple Leafs
Marc-Andre Bergeron… New York Rangers
Todd Bertuzzi… Tampa Bay Lightning
Rob Blake… San Jose Sharks
Mike Comrie… Ottawa Senators
Ty Conklin… Philadelphia Flyers

In the shoes of... Gillis & Murray

In the closing hours leading up to noon et on Wednesday, I’m going to pretend that I’m fielding questions from a press conference in the shoes of GM’s around the NHL. Today we continue with Canucks GM Mike Gillis and Sens GM Bryan Murray!

1. Are you optimistic that you’ll be able to sign the Sedins??
“Not at all. They’re hoping for 12-year deals, but they won’t be getting on the market. I’m in Sweden right now trying to convince them to stay. We’re going ahead and planning like they won’t be here. I expect them to sign elsewhere by Thursday.”
2. Will you be able to lock up Luongo to an extension??
“Without a doubt… something should be announced Wednesday or Thursday. There’s no way we’re trading him or letting him go. He’s way too important to our franchise.”
3. Ok, so if you won’t be able to bring back the Sedins, will you try to make a splash this week??
“Yes – we’ll go hard after the top tier guys like Gaborik and Hossa. I’d be surprised if we struck out on all of them. We also have to sign a couple other forwards to keep up in the West.”

---

1. What’s going to be the end result of the Heatley fiasco??
“I’m afraid that Dany is not going anywhere. We’ve tried and tried to trade him away, but other teams haven’t given me a good enough offer. Heater lost the respect of a lot of numerous GM’s when he publicly demanded a trade.”
2. Will you pay the $4 million bonus that is due to Heatley tomorrow??
“No way!”
3. So if you can’t deal him, what do you expect to do starting tomorrow??
“We’re going to be a bit handcuffed. We have to get a couple good forwards in here to help the big three out, but it seems doubtful right now. Don’t expect us to do too much during the frenzy.”

AM Video Fix!

The Sedins hook up for a nice goal in the '07 playoffs

A Pittsburgh radio station sings a song to Hossa!!

Marian Gaborik scores 5 goals in a game last season...

In the shoes of... Brian Burke

In the closing hours leading up to noon et on Wednesday, I’m going to pretend that I’m fielding questions from a press conference in the shoes of GM’s around the NHL. Tonight we’ll start with Brian Burke!

1. I have to get this off my chest… is your ego big enough that you have to have the #1 or #2 pick in the draft??
“Yes, why do you think I came to Toronto?”
2. Do you expect to see Tomas Kaberle in a Leafs uniform come October??
“As of right now, yes. But we’re exploring our options as some teams have offered some nice packages. With his no-movement clause being lifted for a period of time, we’re going to do anything to make our team better.”
3. If Vancouver can’t sign the Sedin twins by Wednesday, are you going to try to sign them??
“Are you kidding me!? I would love to bring the twins to Toronto. What kind of question is that? I drafted them when I was with Vancouver, and we have the cap room here to sign them. Of course we'll make a play for 'em.”

4. What do you guys like about Nazem Kadri??
"Where have you been!? Jesus Christ... he's going to be a heckuva player in the league despite his size."

DWAYNE ROLOSON

Height: 6’1”
Weight: 180
Catches: Left
Age: 39

2008/09 Salary: $3.0 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $2.5-3.0

2008/09 Stats: 63 GP, 28-24-9, 2.77 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO

Possible Suitors:
1. NY Islanders
2. Colorado
3. Edmonton
4. Toronto
5. Tampa Bay
6. Retirement

Favorite: NY Islanders

Dark horse destination: Tampa Bay

Dwayne Roloson was not all that bad of a goalie with the Oilers the last few years. He had the capability of stealing a game when he had to, and didn’t get much help at all on some nights that they lost. I know his numbers weren’t very good, but there were nights where he was the best player on the ice for Edmonton. There’s no way he’ll be starting 63 games with his new club (like he did last year). ‘Roli’ is 39, and is probably looking to head east to be to closer to his family. If the Islanders want to compete, they should sign Roloson to a 1 year deal to at least platoon with the oft-injured Rick DiPietro. If that doesn’t happen, look for the Leafs and Avs to be other possibilities for this ageing netminder. I’m sure he’ll consider retirement, as well.

Current Prediction:
New York Islanders (1 year, $2.7 mil)

ROB SCUDERI

Height: 6’0”
Weight: 218
Shoots: Left
Age: 30

2008/09 Salary: $0.725 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $2.75-3.5

2008/09 Stats: 81 GP, 1 G, 15 A, +23
Playoff Stats: 24 GP, 1 G, 5 A, +5

Possible Suitors:
1. San Jose
2. Buffalo
3. NY Rangers
4. Anaheim
5. Edmonton
6. Washington
7. Carolina
8. Florida

Favorite: None
Dark horse destination: Washington

Scuderi has emerged as a really good defenseman in his own end in these last 2 playoff runs to the finals. His ability to kill off penalties and control the puck is greatly valued by other teams. And this year was a career-year for him, recording a +23 and 16 points. Re-signing in Pittsburgh seems to be a long-shot right now… but so did re-signing Orpik last summer, so you never know. I don’t have a current favorite for him… you can put all those teams in a blender and mix ‘em up. All 8 would really boost their defensive corps by signing Scuderi. Out of those teams, though, San Jose may need him the most. They’re soft on the back end (besides Douglas Murray), and could’ve really used Scuderi against Anaheim.

Current Prediction:
San Jose Sharks (4 years, $13 million)

BILL GUERIN

Height: 6’2”
Weight: 220
Shoots: Right
Age: 38

2008/09 Salary: $4.5 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $2.5-3.5

2008/09 Stats: 78 GP, 21 G, 27 A
Playoff Stats: 24 GP, 7 G, 8 A, +8

Possible Suitors:
1. Pittsburgh
2. St. Louis

Favorite: Pittsburgh
Dark horse destination: St. Louis

Billy Guerin was a HUGE pickup for the Penguins, both on and off the ice. His veteran presence was key during the playoff run, and he put up some nice numbers in his short time there, too. Guerin’s wearing down a bit, but can still score 25-30 goals in the right situation; and Pittsburgh is the place he can do that. He loved playing with Crosby, and had the most fun in his career in those last couple months. Sources are saying he’s close to re-signing in the Steel City. It looks like the only place on his radar is Pittsburgh.

Current Prediction:
Pittsburgh Penguins (1 year, $3.2 mil)

MIKE KNUBLE

Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230
Shoots: Right
Age: 36

2008/09 Salary: $2.8 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $2.5-3.0

2008/09 Stats: 82 GP, 27 G, 20 A, +5
Playoff Stats: 6 GP, 2 G, 1 A

Possible Suitors:
1. Washington
2. Detroit
3. Anaheim
4. Buffalo
5. San Jose
6. Columbus
7. Nashville
8. Minnesota

Favorite: Washington
Dark horse destination: Columbus

At 36, Mike Knuble can still be a very affordable 20-30 goal scorer in this league. He will improve any power play, scoring 36 goals on the man advantage in the last 3 years. Knuble is just a couple years removed from the 30-goal plateau, and could reach it again if given more opportunities on another team. I don’t think he’ll be going back to Philly, even though he wants to. The Chris Pronger acquisition will cap-strap Philly, and Knuble likely won’t be in the plans. I’m sure he wants to win, so Washington, Detroit, and Anaheim are instant fits. But teams that had poor power plays (Nashville, Columbus) could seek his services.

Current Prediction:
Washington Capitals (2 yrs, $5.6 mil)

ERIK COLE

Height: 6’2”
Weight: 205
Shoots: Left
Age: 30

2008/09 Salary: $4.0 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $2.75-3.5

2008/09 Stats: 80 GP, 18 G, 24 A
Playoff Stats: 18 GP, 0 G, 5 A, -5

Possible Suitors:
1. Carolina
2. Dallas
3. NY Islanders
4. Ottawa
5. Nashville

Favorite: Carolina
Dark horse destination: Nashville

Cole had an up-and-down campaign with Edmonton & Carolina this past season. He was traded to the Oilers on July 1 last year, and things didn’t quite work out there. Cole was traded back to Carolina at the deadline. His return sparked a huge push by the ‘Canes to lock up a playoff spot. But his success didn’t transfer over to the postseason, where he only tallied 5 assists in 18 games. His market value took a big hit in the playoffs. I think you’re going to see him go on the market on Wednesday, and realize there’s not much interest in him given his past health issues. In the end, I can’t really see him re-signing with the Hurricanes as they’ll be going in a different direction… I think a trip to Big D could be in his sights.

Current Prediction:
Dallas Stars (3 yrs, $10 mil)

JOHNNY ODUYA

Height: 6’0”
Weight: 200
Shoots: Left
Age: 27

2008/09 Salary: $0.6 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: Around $3 mil

2008/09 Stats: 82 GP, 7 G, 22 A, +21
Playoff Stats: 7 GP, 0 G, 0 A, +3

Possible Suitors:
1. New Jersey
2. San Jose
3. Tampa Bay
4. Atlanta
5. Minnesota

Favorite: New Jersey
Dark horse destination: Minnesota

The ex-7th round pick by the Capitals has developed into a really solid defenseman with the Devils in a matter of 3 seasons. Oduya picked up a career-high 29 points this year in New Jersey, and those numbers can only go up. There will be a lot of suitors for Oduya if he hits the market Wednesday… but I see a return trip to the Devils by then. It’s a good fit for both parties.

Current Prediction:
New Jersey Devils (4 years, $12 million)

July 1, 2008 - A look back!

Here is a look back to last year's frenzy on July 1st. This was our 'live blog' from that day. Thought some of you may be interested in reading this. Some of the comments I made that day were, well, stupid!

We'll hopefully be doing something like this again Wednesday through Friday...

--------------------------------------
RLD VAULT: JULY 1, 2008

*updates will appear at the top of this post.

News: Hossa's agent meeting with K-Lowe tonight
RLD opinion: I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but Hossa going to Edmonton just makes too much sense! Wherever he signs, I think he'll make a decision tomorrow.

News: Ryder re-unites with Julien in Boston
RLD opinion: Remember when Michael Ryder broke out and became a household name?? Claude Julien was the coach of the Habs. Ryder needed to get out of Montreal, and will be in a good situation in Boston. He signed a 3-year, $12 million deal earlier tonight. The Bruins likely won't sign Hossa, so they turn to Plan B and grab Ryder.

News: Valiquette re-signs in New York
RLD opinion: Not a surprise here. No idea what the contract may be. But, good move by the Rangers. Valiquette is one of the best backups in the league that no one knows about.

News: Mark Streit an... Isle?
RLD opinion: Mark Streit has just signed a 5-year, $20.5 million deal with the New York Islanders. The Islanders?? I think this may have been a reaction to what the Rangers and Devils have done. I cannot see Streit doing well there. He's more of a system defenseman, and doesn't fit well at all on the island IMO.

News: David Koci the latest to sign with the Bolts
RLD opinion: Tampa Bay signed Koci two a 1-year, 2-way deal. If he plays in the NHL, he'll make $525,000. Koci has most recently been in the Blackhawks organization.

News: Redden taking his game to Broadway
RLD opinion: Redden signs on with the Blueshirts with a 6-year, $39 mil deal. Two great moves by New York in the last hour. Rozsival and Redden make that blueline suddenly formidable.

News: Hagman signs with the Leafs
RLD opinion: Toronto has made their 3rd move of the day with the signing of Niklas Hagman. I think this is a solid move by Cliff Fletcher. The contract is for 4 years, $12 million.

News: New York Rangers re-sign d-man Rozsival
RLD opinion: Defenseman Michal Rozsival has decided to re-sign with the Rangers. The contract is reportedly worth $20 million over 4 years. Good job by GM Glen Sather...

News: Bobby Holik goes back to New Jersey
RLD opinion: Holik has signed a 1-year, $2.5 million deal with the Devils, according to SportsNet. He's disappeared since signing with the Thrashers after the lockout.

News: Flyers sign grinder Metropolit

RLD opinion: He's nothing more than a 4th-liner, but something the Blueshirts need. Terms of the contract TBA.

News: Commodore signs with Blue Jackets
RLD opinion: Good signing until you see the contract. 5 years, $18+ million. I'm sorry... Jackets just spent stupid money on an average d-man. He'll be making more $$ than Nashville's Ryan Suter.

News: Rolston to New Jersey
RLD opinion: Great move by the Devils. 4 years, $20 million... a bit too much for a 35-year old in my opinion. Still, they needed to add some offense this summer. Remember, New Jersey drafted him way back when...

News: Backes' offer sheet matched by Blues
RLD opinion: I'm a bit surprised. Backes will now make $7.5 mil over 3 years.

News: Ottawa signs Auld to backup Gerber
RLD opinion: So... Bryan Murray is going with Gerber. We'll see if they make the playoffs. Auld's contract is for $2 mil over 2 years. Auld was average with Boston last season, sporting a 2.68 GAA in 32 appearances. The Sens could've done better.

RLD opinion: Veteran netminder Olaf Kolzig has signed a 1-year, $1.5 million deal with the Lightning. He could make a nice duo with Mike Smith, and will be a good tutor to Karri Ramo.

RLD opinion: Pittsburgh has signed Eric Godard to a 3-year deal; New York has signed forward Aaron Voros (Terms TBA).

News: Canucks sign Backes to offer sheet
RLD opinion: Vancouver has reportedly offered Blues RFA David Bakes to an offer sheet. It's a $7.5 million deal over 3 years. St. Louis has 7 days to match it. If I were GM John Davidson, I'd let Backes go... he's not worth $2.5 mil a year.

News: Cory Stillman going to South Florida
RLD opinion: The Florida Panthers have signed veteran Cory Stillman to a 3-year deal. Nice signing by GM Jacques Martin, but he still has some work to do...

News: Cristobal Huet signs with Chicago

RLD opinion: Fedoruk has signed a 3-year deal with the Coyotes. Solid move by Gretzky and company. Fedoruk was an impact for the Wild late in the year last season.

News: Toronto has signed defenseman Jeff Finger
RLD opinion: TSN is reporting the deal is worth $14 million over 4 years. You gotta wonder if McCabe or Kubina is about to get traded.

News: Colorado replaces Theodore with Raycroft
RLD opinion: I called this one! The Avs have moved quickly after losing Jose Theodore to the Capitals. Andrew Raycroft has signed a 1-year, $800,000 deal with Colorado. We'll see how Raycroft responds after getting out of Toronto... I think this could be good for him.

News: Caps sign Jose Theodore

News: Rene Bourque traded to Calgary for draft pick
RLD opinion: Roster-clearing by Chicago? Maybe for Campbell... I didn't expect this many trades. It's like the trade deadline and UFA day mixed into one! The jury is still out on Bourque, in my opinion. A conditional 2nd round pick going back to Chicago.

News: Oilers trade Pitkanen to Carolina in exchange for Erik Cole

RLD opinion: TSN is reporting that the contract is worth $15 mil over 4 years. I expected this... he loved playing there after the trade deadline.

News: Raffi Torres traded from Edmonton to Columbus for Gilbert Brule
RLD opinion: This move gives Kevin Lowe an extra million to spend.... Hossa on his radar?? I believe so. Brule is good for the Oilers. The Oil just keep getting faster! As for Torres, well, I'll take a wait-and-see approach. Kind of a jeckyl-and-hyde player...

News: Pandolfo and Clarkson re-sign in Jersey, also
RLD opinion: This is from a very reliable source. No details of the contracts yet.

News: Rolston to test market
RLD opinion: I almost expected it after the Bolts couldn't sign him yesterday. Tampa is still one of his choices, though.

News: Mike Green re-signs with Washington
RLD opinion: A move that needed to be done by the Caps. TSN says the contract will be 4-years, $21 million. A bit too much I think, but that's what they had to do before Kevin Lowe offered $6 mil per, ya know?

News: Bryce Salvador re-signed with Devils
RLD opinion: Solid move by Lou. I think Salvador is a good fit in Jersey. The contract is a 4-year deal. Good start for the Devils!

AM Video Fix!

Darren Dreger's report on the Sedins from yesterday...

The video's title says it all... (watch to the end)

Quick look at the trading block!

- Bryan Murray’s self-inflicted ‘deadline’ to trade Dany Heatley has obviously passed and it doesn’t seem like anything is imminent. Teams like the Sharks, Wild, and Rangers may still be interested in acquiring ‘Heater’… but the Sens’ asking price seems to be a bit higher than teams are willing to go. Once July 1 arrives, Ottawa owes him a $4 million bonus. If he’s not dealt by then, he’s stuck in Ottawa. Right now, I’d say it’s an 85% chance that Heatley remains in Canada’s capital.
- It appeared that Leafs GM Brian Burke was close to trading away Tomas Kaberle on Friday… but nothing could get finalized. Unless Burke gets wowed before Wednesday, expect Kaberle to possibly be dealt after the frenzy to a team desperate for a d-man. I currently mark his chances of getting dealt at 60%.
- The rampant rumors on Vincent Lecavalier will not go away. I have one point to make here… there’s almost no chance that co-Lightning owner Len Barrie will change his stance on this mess before Vinny’s new contract kicks in on Wednesday. There’s at least a 90% chance that he stays in Tampa; that number gets closer to 100% by the day! Don’t believe the rumors – Vinny is a Bolt for life.
- Look for San Jose and Calgary to try to be active before July 1. The Sharks could unload one of their stars (Marleau, Michalek, etc.) before Wednesday to open up the possibility of signing one of the bigger free agents (Hossa?). And the Flames may have to move a defenseman, likely Robyn Regehr or Cory Sarich, to make room for Bouwmeester.

Grading the draft

TEAM-BY-TEAM DRAFT GRADES

5 years from now, these grades could end up being the complete opposite. But we're gonna go head and evaluate the picks!

* C- is the lowest grade I gave here…
* THN = The Hockey News

Anaheim Ducks: A-
I really liked what GM Bob Murray did this weekend. They got a GREAT return for Pronger and his 1 year remaining on his contract. IMO, Kyle Palmieri will turn out to be better than Peter Holland. Clark could be a steal on the blue line.
Atlanta Thrashers: B+
The Thrashers picked up some good building blocks for an average farm system. Evander Kane has the potential to be the most prolific goal-scorer in this class. Jeremy Morin and Carl Klingberg were also good picks up front.
Boston Bruins: C-
It’s hard to give them a grade, really. The B’s had very few picks, including just 3 in the first 5 rounds. I’m taking a wait-and-see approach with Jordan Caron. I felt they needed to get a couple defensemen in this draft.
Buffalo Sabres: B
Zack Kassian, comparable to Todd Bertuzzi, could be the power forward the Sabres have been looking for. I also liked the pick of Marcus Foligno, who has good blood-lines in the league. They picked a nice variety of prospects.
Calgary Flames: B
This grade probably would have been a C+ without the acquisition of Bouwmeester’s rights. Tim Erixon should be a nice defenseman in the future, but I’m unsure about the rest of their picks.
Carolina Hurricanes: C-
For me, the jury is out on their picks. I’m not sold that Paradis will turn out to be a good 1st rounder. I also thought they needed to draft some goaltending depth. Defenseman Brian Dumoulin could be a solid d-man, though.
Chicago Blackhawks: B+
GM Dale Tallon continued his strong drafting, despite the low 1st round selection. D-man Dylan Olsen will be a great fit with the ‘Hawks, and they got a steal at #209 with David Gilbert (ranked 47th by THN).
Colorado Avalanche: A+
They get the best grade from the draft. New GM Greg Sherman hit the jackpot this weekend. Duchene is going to be big-time in Denver… O’Reilly and Elliott were great value picks in the 2nd round… so was Tyson Barrie in the 3rd round.
Columbus Blue Jackets: B-
At #21, the Jackets picked possibly the best skater in the draft… John Moore. He’s a few years away from being NHL-ready, but he’ll be a good one. They did well stocking up defensemen.
Dallas Stars: C+
For a team that never gets to pick this high in the draft (#8), they took a pair of reaches in the first couple rounds. Scott Glennie should be a good sniper, but Alex Chiasson was a bit off the wall at 38.
Detroit Red Wings: B
The Wings found a steal at #32 in Landon Ferraro… he’s going to be a stud in the Motor City. Who will be their annual late-round gem?? I’m gonna say Nick Jensen, the d-man out of Green Bay in the USHL.
Edmonton Oilers: B+
GM Steve Tambellini had a very successful first draft. Paajarvi-Svensson fell to them at #10, but I feel like that could be a bust. But the selections of Toni Rajala and Olivier Roy caught my eye; both were great value picks in the 4th and 5th rounds, respectively.
Florida Panthers: B-
I hope they know Dmitry Kulikov could be tough to sign. Other than that, though, Drew Shore was a steal at #44. Most had him going in the 20-25 range of the 1st round. And Josh Birkholz could be a nice find in the 3rd round.
Los Angeles Kings: C+
Brayden Schenn is going to be a special player… but the rest of the picks seem to be projects. Kyle Clifford, taken at #35, wasn’t ranked in the top 100 by THN. Besides Schenn I don’t think LA their farm system too much.
Minnesota Wild: C
They really wanted Ryan Ellis at #12; and when Nashville took him, their draft table freaked out and dropped to #16. From there they may have reached for in-state product Nick Leddy. Matthew Hackett, though, could be their future starting netminder.
Montreal Canadiens: B
GM Bob Gainey & company pleased the home-town crowd by taking Louis Leblanc in the 1st round. Leblanc has drawn comparisons to Mike Richards. The Habs also had 2 solid value picks with Joonas Nattinen and Mac Bennett.
Nashville Predators: B+
As I stated yesterday, Ryan Ellis will be a great fit with the Predators. GM David Poile also picked up a gem in Zach Budish, whose stock dropped strictly due to injury. Other picks I liked were Michael Latta and Nick Oliver.
New Jersey Devils: C-
Top pick Jacob Josefson is not a good fit with them, IMO; that is just a total gut feeling. The picks of blue-liners Eric Gelinas and Seth Helgeson, though, may have saved this from being a disaster.
New York Islanders: A-
The only reason I think Tavares may not live up to his billing is because he’s going to the island. Garth Snow also did not need to trade up for Calvin de Haan. Goalie Mikko Koskinen projects to be a #1 goalie in the future.
New York Rangers: B+
I really liked the Rangers’ draft. 5 years from now, Chris Kreider could be one of the bigger stars to come out of this draft. Ethan Werek and Ryan Bourque were also good value picks. My only knock on their selections is that they needed to get one of the better goalies… their system is thin in net.
Ottawa Senators: A-
Jared Cowen is going to be really good in Ottawa… great value at #9. He has the potential to be like Phaneuf. I also liked their 2nd round picks of Jakob Silfverburg and goalie Robin Lehner.
Philadelphia Flyers: C+
GM Paul Holmgren mortgaged a chunk of the Flyers’ future to acquire Chris Pronger… and one of those picks turned into Kyle Palmieri. D-man Simon Bertilsson could be the best of Philly’s draft picks.
Phoenix Coyotes: C
I was not a fan of the Coyotes’ draft. I’m not sold that Oliver Ekman-Larsson was worth taking at #6… that pick just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for some reason. Their 2nd round pick, Chris Brown, should make the NHL, but was a bit of a reach.
Pittsburgh Penguins: B
I like the fact that the Pens got 2 big defensemen with their first 2 selections. Simon Despres slipped a bit and Pittsburgh snatched him; he’ll fit well there. Philip Samuelsson, the son of Ulf, should turn out to be a good pick, too. Good drafting by GM Ray Shero.
San Jose Sharks: C
Hard to give San Jose anything higher than a C since they didn’t have many picks, and no 1st rounder. I really liked the pick of 6’7” d-man Taylor Doherty, though. The Sharks usual put together solid drafts, so a couple of these picks will likely turn out good.
St. Louis Blues: C
I hate to mark them as losers in this draft, but I just don’t know much about their picks after Rundblad. I was not a fan of that pick, even though Rundblad will be a good d-man. Leblanc or Schroeder could’ve been a better fit IMO.
Tampa Bay Lightning: A
I thought GM Brian Lawton and his staff did a bang-up job this weekend. Victor Hedman and Carter Ashton were very solid picks in round one, and will fit in well in Tampa. Panik and Hutchings were good picks yesterday.
Toronto Maple Leafs: B
The Leafs don’t have a very good farm system, but I’m sure that will change in the next couple years under Brian Burke. It started this weekend with the picks of Nazem Kadri and Kenny Ryan, both of whom will be great offensively.
Vancouver Canucks: B+
I know the Canucks brass was not expecting Jordan Schroeder to drop to #22. This was an excellent pick, and he’ll blend in well with Cody Hodgson and the rest of the future ‘Nucks. That pick alone gives this team a good grade for the weekend.
Washington Capitals: B
I’m down on their 1st round pick, Marcus Johansson. I felt Ashton or Ferraro were better fits. But the picks of Orlov and Eakin saved them. Orlov was a fast-riser leading up to the draft, and they nabbed him at #55.

So there you have it!! My draft coverage is finished for the time being as we’re gearing up for a busy few days leading up to the frenzy on Wednesday. July 1 is usually one of the first dates I circle on my calendar… I love this time of year!!

Possible Suitors:
1. Anaheim
2. Minnesota
3. San Jose
4. Montreal
5. Washington

Favorite: Anaheim
Dark horse destination: Washington

Even though Koivu has pretty much passed his prime, he can still be a very good #2 center with the right team. He’s produced .82 points per game since the lockout. Montreal’s long-time captain seems to be heading elsewhere in the next week or so. Anaheim and Minnesota are the 2 favorites if you ask me. Does he go to SoCal to join his good friend Teemu Selanne?? Or to the State of Hockey where his brother Mikko plays?? His consistency and leadership will still get him a considerable contract… and with the Ducks being a good #2 center away from competing for a division title (or more), I think Saku heads to the west coast.

Anyone looking for a cheap and versatile top-nine forward?? Meet Chad LaRose. He’s an interesting player on the market this summer. LaRose had a solid postseason as he played with Staal & Whitney at times. I really like what had can bring to the table… a lot of effort & heart. He’ll play in all situations, and even scored 19 goals this year. He’s just 27, so there’s a chance his numbers could just keep going up. As of now, I’m assuming he will re-sign with the ‘Canes. But if he doesn’t, numerous teams will be after him. I might over-value LaRose, but for around $2 million a year, he can be a valuable piece to any puzzle.

Current Prediction:
Carolina Hurricanes (3 yrs, $6 mil)

Kenny Ryan interview after picked by Toronto...

Brian Burke interviewed after the pick at #7... (watch to the end!)

Why Ellis is a good fit with Nashville

The reaction at the Predators’ draft party at O’Charley’s in Franklin, TN wasn’t kind to the Predators’ pick of Ryan Ellis. Boos filled the restaurant and disgruntled fans started to make their way to the exits. The popular pick with the fans would have been forward Jordan Schroeder, who fell to the Canucks at #22. And yes, I feel the pain of Preds fans that disagreed with GM David Poile’s decision… flashy/exciting forwards are always nice to have. But it’s also nice to have a premier puck-moving defenseman in your organization.

Ellis, at 5’9” and 173, has a wicked slap shot from the point and is very reliable in his own end. He racked up 89 points in 57 games for Windsor of the OHL this season, who won the Memorial Cup. He’s also not afraid to show a gritty side to his game, and lay a big hit on his opponent. Ellis projects to be a premier power play quarterback when he arrives to the NHL.

Poile’s philosophy has always been on the defensive side of the puck… it seems like he always picks more d-men than forwards! But after Blum, Franson, and Sulzer, there are not many defensemen in the Preds’ system that is a guarantee to come to Nashville. Those 3 will eventually make it to the NHL in the next 1-2 years. Sulzer & Franson could step in this season. Ellis offers more depth to the defense in the system that the team needed, whether the fans like it or not. Poile also picked up a solid forward in Zach Budish with the 41st pick. Budish was supposed to be a 1st round pick, but missed most of last season with a knee injury suffered playing high school football. He'll surely fully recover from the injury, and is a big power forward that the Preds will be lucky to have in the lineup in 2-3 years.

I understand offense is the current need on the roster, but Jordan Schroeder won’t be ready for the NHL for at least 2 more years (like Ellis). He is going to be a good player with the Canucks, but Ellis is going to be a perfect fit for the Predators. I’d understand the displeasure if the Preds were at #4 and picked Jared Cowen over Evander Kane, but this is different. The more I think about this pick, the more I like it for Nashville…

Winners, losers, and steals

Winners & losers
5 winners:

Avalanche-
New GM Greg Sherman hit the jackpot this weekend. Duchene is going to be big-time in Denver… O’Reilly and Elliott were great value picks in the 2nd round… so was Tyson Barrie in the 3rd round.
Lightning-
Victor Hedman and Carter Ashton were very solid picks last night, and will fit in well in Tampa. Panik and Hutchings were good picks today.
Islanders-
‘Johnny T’ was certainly the prize of the draft… Calvin de Haan was a reach but will be good. Mikko Koskinen, the first goalie taken in the draft, projects to be a #1 ‘tender in the future.
Ducks-
I really liked what GM Bob Murray did this weekend. They got a GREAT return for Pronger and his 1 year remaining on his contract. IMO, Kyle Palmieri will turn out to be better than Peter Holland. Clark could be a steal on the blue line.
Senators-
Jared Cowen is going to be really good in Ottawa… great value at #9. I also liked their 2nd round picks of Jakob Silfverburg and goalie Robin Lehner.

5 losers:
Phoenix-
I was not a fan of the Coyotes’ draft… they could have done better at #’s 6 & 36 IMO.
New Jersey-
Jacob Josefson is not a good fit with them. The picks of Gelinas and Helgeson, though, may have saved this from being a disaster.
Carolina-
For me, the jury is out on their picks. They only had 6 picks, but still. I’m not sold that Paradis will turn out to be a good 1st rounder.
St. Louis-
I hate to mark them as losers, but I just don’t know much about their picks after Rundblad. Although Rundblad could be good, they needed a forward at #17 IMO.
Boston-
The B’s had very few picks, and I’m taking a wait-and-see approach with Jordan Caron.

I look at Biron as this year’s Jose Theodore, kind of. He’s not reliable as a true #1, but can be solid in a 1A-1B role. He had a worse year this past season than in 07/08, which could hurt his value come July 1. I see the Avs and Isles as prime destinations for Biron. His chances of returning to Philly took a hit when they signed Ray Emery this month. In the end, I think he’ll go to Colorado as they will make him their #1 man in net…

Beauchemin had a difficult season as he tore his ACL back in the fall, and only played in 20 games before the playoffs. He didn’t get many opportunities to perform to his potential as the Ducks brought in Ryan Whitney and James Wisniewski at the deadline. So teams have to look at what Beauchemin did before this season, which was kind of a lost one for Francois. He’s been a really solid player for Anaheim in the last 3 years, and has a heavy shot from the blue line. It’s tough to gage his asking price… it’ll probably in the $4 mil range. My gut tells me he’ll follow Brian Burke to Toronto, especially if they trade Kaberle.

Current Prediction:
Toronto Maple Leafs (4 years, $15 million)

Calgary lands Jay-Bo's rights

GM Darryl Sutter has pulled off a pretty big deal, reeling in the negotiating rights for Jay Bouwmeester - the top UFA defensemen this summer. Calgary gave up the negotiating rights to Jordan Leopold and a 3rd round pick.

Now the big question is whether the Flames can sign Bouwmeester by July 1 and fit him under the cap. I’m sure Sutter will want to keep both Jay-Bo and Dion Phaneuf. They have a bit less than $10 million to spend, which should be enough to sign Jay-Bo. With the need of a couple forwards, though, look for Cory Sarich or Robyn Regehr to get traded to either clear cap space or acquire a forward. Bouwmeester has said he wanted to sign in Western Canada this summer, so I’d be pretty confident that the Flames can lock him up by Wednesday.

Tavares goes #1...

Bell Centre goes nuts over Habs' pick!!

1st round recap + Pronger

The lack of trades was a disappointment, but the 1st round provided a lot of pick swapping after Nashville’s pick at 11. Here are my thoughts on some of the picks that were made tonight…

Picks I really like…
3. Matt Duchene, COL
The next great center for the Avs.
4. Evander Kane, ATL
Exactly what Atlanta needed.
8. Scott Glennie, DAL
The fast riser will be really good in Big D.
9. Jared Cowen, OTT
Bryan Murray had to have been thrilled for Cowen to fall to #9.
13. Zack Kassian, BUF
His presence in front of the net is something Buffalo does not have.
18. Louis Leblanc, MTL
This kid is going to shine in Montreal.
19. Chris Kreider, NYR
Could be the biggest steal of the draft 5 years from now.
21. John Moore, CBJ
The Jackets dropped and still got the d-man they wanted.
22. Jordan Schroeder, VAN
Could have gone as high as 6; will make great duo with Cody Hodgson.
28. Dylan Olsen, CHI
Chicago needed a d-man and got a big hitter.

Picks I didn’t like…
6. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, PHX
Pierre McGuire loved this pick… so I hate it!
12. Calvin de Haan, NYI
Garth Snow could have probably got him later in the 1st round.
15. Peter Holland, ANA
I’m not really high on this kid; not a good value pick IMO.
24. Marcus Johansson, WSH
Caps draft well, but Ferraro or Ashton would’ve been a better pick.
27. Philippe Paradis, CAR
We’ll wait-and-see with him, but could have traded down to get Paradis.

Potential busts...
1. John Tavares, NYI
He'll be a good player, but I don't think he'll live up to the hype.
10. Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, EDM
To me, this doesn't feel like a good fit.
14. Dmitri Kulikov, FLA
Sign-ability could be an issue with him.
17. David Rundblad, STL
I'm not feeling this pick; St. Louis already has a couple prime d-men prospects.
20. Jacob Josefson, NJ
This pick has bust written all over it... just a gut feeling.

Top remaining players for Day 2…
F Jeremy Morin
F Landon Ferraro
C Drew Shore
D Stefan Elliott
D Dmitri Orlov
C Ryan O’Reilly
F Ethan Werek
LW Carl Klingberg
G Matthew Hackett
C Joonas Nattinen
D Charles-Olivier Roussel
F Zach Budish

*I’ll have a new 2nd round mock draft up tomorrow morning!

PRONGER HEADED TO PHILLY

This turned out to be the only big trade of the day, and it could shift the power in the Atlantic Division to the other side of Pennsylvania. Chris Pronger is going to be a great fit with the Flyers. Anaheim got a considerable package in return, re-acquiring Joffrey Lupul, and a 1st rounder from last year in Luca Sbisa. The Ducks also got a couple 1st rounders this year (Palmieri) and next year, along with a conditional 3rd round pick.

Paul Holmgren & company sacrificed a chunk of their future to get Pronger. They basically traded away three straight 1st’s for the big defenseman, along with Lupul. But when you look at the Flyers’ blue line now, it’s one of the best in the league. It looks like this: Pronger, Timonen, Coburn, Parent, Jones, and Carle. That group has a little bit of everything, and it could be enough to get them back to being a legit Cup contender. Even though Pronger has just one year left on his contract, Philly wouldn’t have given up all of these pieces without thinking they could sign him to an extension. So I’d expect Pronger to sign a two or three-year extension later this summer. Hopefully his wife approves of Philly...

From Anaheim’s point of view, they got a heckuva return in this deal. With Scott Niedermayer notifying GM Bob Murray of his return earlier today, the door was wide open for Pronger to be dealt. Joffrey Lupul’s best couple years were with the (Mighty) Ducks. I was very surprised that Luca Sbisa was included in this trade. And then they received 3 additional picks, including tonight’s selection of Kyle Palmieri. With this trade, the Ducks continue to build a great core of young talents.

I love this deal for both teams. The pressure is on the Flyers to win a Cup in the immediate future, but Pronger’s recent playoff success should bode well. In the short-term, the Flyers win this trade. Long-term, it’ll obviously be the Ducks coming on top, and I think Paul Holmgren knows that.

I love the suspense!

For the first time since 2004, there is drama tied into the draft… and I love this suspense of not knowing who the Islanders are taking #1! The close to unanimous choice for the Isles is John Tavares… and how do they not pick him when they have a sold out building on the island?? Because they are the Islanders. This organization has a past of doing some things that are unusual and off-the-wall. I am actually expecting them NOT to pick Tavares, just because they are the Isles.

There is also suspense on the trade front. Tomas Kaberle won’t be traded until the draft starts because that’s when the window for his no-trade clause to go away happens. Philly, Vancouver, and now Boston look to be the favorites. Other big names in play are Dany Heatley and Jay Bouwmeester. The Sharks will be active, I believe, and was told by a source last night that Joe Thornton (not Marleau) could be moved sometime today… so keep an eye on that!

It’s certainly shaping up to be one of the more memorable drafts in recent history. I’m expecting a lot of wheeling and dealing on the floor of the Bell Centre, including picks & players… can’t wait! I’ll be attending a Predators draft party, so I’ll have a recap of my thoughts on tonight’s action later on or tomorrow morning. Enjoy the draft, everyone!!

SCOTT NIEDERMAYER

Height: 6’1”
Weight: 195
Shoots: Left
Age: 35

2008/09 Salary: $6.75 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $6.0-7.0

2008/09 Stats: 82 GP, 14 G, 45 A, -8
Playoff Stats: 13 GP, 3 G, 7 A

Possible Suitors:
1. Anaheim
2. Retirement
3. Vancouver

Favorite: Anaheim
Dark horse destination: Vancouver

Niedermayer continues to be one of the more reliable defensemen in this league, and has been really durable over the years. He was a big reason why the Ducks took down San Jose in round one of the playoffs this year. He can take over a game like no other defenseman. His skills on the man advantage are very valuable to the team.

And for the 2009-10 season, I fully expect Niedermayer to be in a Ducks uniform again… it’s really either that or retirement. Vancouver is a dark horse if he and his brother Rob want to ride off into the sunset together. It’s only a matter of time when he makes his decision, and Ducks GM Bob Murray would like one sooner rather than later. ‘Nieds’ re-signs for another year…

Current Prediction:
Anaheim Ducks (1 year, $6.25 million)

NIK ANTROPOV

2008/09 Salary: $2.15 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $3.75-4.5

Playoff Stats: 7 GP, 2 G, 1 A, -1

Possible Suitors:
1. NY Rangers
2. Columbus
3. Nashville
4. Washington
5. Dallas
6. Vancouver
7. Minnesota
8. NY Islanders

Favorite: NY Rangers
Dark horse destination: Vancouver

After 63 games in Toronto this year, Antropov was dealt to the Rangers at the trade deadline. Antropov performed pretty well for the Blueshirts as he was immediately placed on the team’s top line with Gomez & Avery. His big body and skills around the net are coveted around the league, but he has the potential of being a bust where ever he goes. Inconsistency has been the name of his game the last couple of years.

The Rangers really want to keep him, but they may not be able to afford him under a tight budget… plus, I believe GM Glen Sather will be aiming higher than Antropov. While teams like Columbus, Nashville, and Washington could get into the mix, I think he’ll be going back to Broadway; but that opinion could change between now and next Wednesday.

Current Prediction:
New York Rangers (5 yrs, $20 mil)
