Welcome to the 5th edition of ‘Saturday Fantasy’! If you’re new to the RLD, 3 of us will select players each week that we think will do well fantasy wise. Currently, I’m leading 6-2-0 over Michael and Chris, respectively. It’s time to get your act together, Mr. Devils fan!

Projected Goaltenders:
CAR- Cam Ward
(09/10 stats: 2-6-3, 2.89 GAA)
PHI- Ray Emery (09/10 stats: 5-3-1, 2.62 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Carolina is arguably the worst team in hockey right now, and it won’t help that they’ll be going up against a desperate Flyers club. It won’t matter who’s in net… Flyers win big!
Prediction: Flyers 5, Hurricanes 1
---
Edmonton Oilers (7-5-1) @ Boston Bruins (5-5-1)
1:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
EDM- Shawn Horcoff
BOS- Patrice Bergeron

Projected Goaltenders:
EDM- Nikolai Khabibulin
(09/10 stats: 2-6-3, 2.89 GAA)
BOS- Tuukka Rask (09/10 stats: 1-1-1, 3.17 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
I’m guessing Rask gets the call for Boston since they play tomorrow in New York. The Oilers survived a major scare against Detroit on Thursday. Should be a good game, and I like Boston in a close one.
Prediction: Bruins 4, Oilers 3 (OT)
---
Atlanta Thrashers (4-4-1) @ Ottawa Senators (6-3-2)
2:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
ATL- Zach Bogosian

Projected Goaltenders:

ATL- Johan Hedberg (09/10 stats: 1-1, 3.12 GAA)
OTT- Pascal Leclaire (09/10 stats: 4-2-1, 2.72 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
The Thrashers have lost four straight since starting 4-1. They’ll look to get back on track, but Ottawa has been a house of horrors for them. The Sens catch the Thrashers sleepwalking today…
Prediction: Senators 4, Thrashers 2
---
New Jersey Devils (7-4-0) @ Tampa Bay Lightning (4-3-3)
3:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
NJ- Zach Parise

Projected Goaltenders:

NJ- Martin Brodeur (09/10 stats: 6-4, 2.58 GAA)
TB- Mike Smith (09/10 stats: 2-2-3, 3.17 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
New Jersey puts their perfect road record (6-0) on the line in Tampa today as they take on the Bolts. Tampa’s riding high after Thursday’s win, and I think they’ll get payback on the Devils.
Prediction: Lightning 3, Devils 2
---
Buffalo Sabres (8-1-1) @ New York Islanders (3-4-5)
7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
BUF- Drew Stafford
NYI- John Tavares

Projected Goaltenders:
BUF- Ryan Miller
(Last night vs. TOR: 33 Saves, 2 GA)
NYI- Martin Biron (09/10 stats: 0-3-2, 3.45 GAA)

Game Thoughts:

Both of these clubs picked up overtime wins last night, and are looking to build on their current winning streaks. If Miller is in net for the Sabres, I think they could roll the Isles.
Prediction: Sabres 4, Islanders 1
---
Toronto Maple Leafs (1-7-3) @ Montreal Canadiens (6-7-0)
7:00 ET… TV: CBC, NHL Net. (US)

Players to watch:
TOR- Matt Stajan
MTL- Brian Gionta

Projected Goaltenders:
TOR- Vesa Toskala
(09/10 stats: 0-2-1, 5.57 GAA)
MTL- Carey Price (09/10 stats: 2-5, 3.44 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
If it ends up being Toskala vs. Price, it’ll undoubtedly be the most entertaining game of the night (whether it’s good or bad). This game could go either way, but I just see the Habs simply out-scoring the Leafs
Prediction: Canadiens 5, Maple Leafs 4
---
Minnesota Wild (4-9-0) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (11-2-0)
7:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
MIN- Mikko Koivu
PIT- Alex Goligoski

Projected Goaltenders:
MIN- Josh Harding
(09/10 stats: 0-2, 5.51 GAA)
PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury (09/10 stats: 9-1, 2.07 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
I think the Wild will show up in Pittsburgh as Casper for Halloween! Coming off a win last night at home, Minny will be due for a down game. Even without Malkin, look for the Pens to smoke the Wild.
Prediction: Penguins 5, Wild 1
---
Florida Panthers (3-7-1) @ St. Louis Blues (5-5-1)
8:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
FLA- Nathan Horton
STL- Paul Kariya

Projected Goaltenders:
FLA- Tomas Vokoun
(09/10 stats: 1-7-1, 3.65 GAA)
STL- Chris Mason (09/10 stats: 3-3-1, 2.69 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
The Panthers won a thriller in Dallas last night, but I think they’ll come up on the short end of the stick here. St. Louis is desperate to get some momentum going, and will handle the Panthers.
Prediction: Blues 3, Panthers 0
---
Dallas Stars (6-2-5) @ Nashville Predators (5-6-1)
8:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
DAL- James Neal
NSH- Shea Weber

Projected Goaltenders:
DAL- Marty Turco
(09/10 stats: 4-2-3, 2.26 GAA)
NSH- Pekka Rinne (09/10 stats: 3-3, 2.74 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Nashville has something going here. They’ve responded since the embarrassing losses, and won two games this week in different styles. The Stars may be the better team, but not on this night.
Prediction: Predators 3, Stars 2
---
Anaheim Ducks (4-6-1) @ Phoenix Coyotes (8-4-0)
9:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
ANA- Ryan Getzlaf
PHX- Radim Vrbata

Projected Goaltenders:
ANA- Jonas Hiller
(09/10 stats: 4-4, 3.06 GAA)
PHX- Ilya Bryzgalov (09/10 stats: 7-3, 1.77 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Anaheim trounced Vancouver last night, and could have scored too many goals (if there’s ever such a thing). I think they’ll get shutdown by Dave Tippett’s stout defense. Go with the ‘Yotes…
Prediction: Coyotes 4, Ducks 1
---
Detroit Red Wings (4-4-3) @ Calgary Flames (7-3-1)
10:00 ET… TV: CBC, Local Networks

Players to watch:
DET- Pavel Datsyuk
CGY- Jay Bouwmeester

Projected Goaltenders:
DET- Chris Osgood
(09/10 stats: 3-2-2, 3.40 GAA)
CGY- Miikka Kiprusoff (09/10 stats: 7-2-1, 3.09 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
After getting off to hot start vs. the Avs, Brent Sutter’s club waltzed through the rest of the game and lost 3-2. I don’t see that happening again. Detroit has goaltending issues, and the Flames light the lamp at home.
Prediction: Flames 4, Red Wings 3

Friday Night Fights

Best fights from the week that was!

Morning Skate: October 30

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Devils 2, Bruins 1
Lightning 5, Senators 2
Capitals 4, Thrashers 3
Coyotes 2, Blues 0
Predators 2, Blackhawks 0
Oilers 6, Red Wings 5 (SO)
Canucks 2, Kings 1 (SO)
Predictions record: 5-1-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Ilya Bryzgalov, PHX
(32 Saves, Shutout)
He rebounded extremely well after a pair of bad performances with a 32-save effort against a relentless Blues team. He made a lot of great saves.
2. Steven Stamkos, TB (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Stamkos scored an absolute beauty vs. Ottawa last night, and had 2 more points to go with it. He’s really taken off this season!
3. Ales Hemsky, EDM (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Hemsky was big in the Oilers’ win over the Wings, scoring a pair of nice goals.
Dud of the Night:
Edmonton’s kid line
… Sam Gagner was taken off the top line (in favor of Horcoff) and had a horrible night alongside Andrew Cogliano & Robert Nilsson. The three each had a -3 rating, and combined for just 4 shots on goal. The Oilers won, but they’ll need better play from this line moving forward.

Tonight’s Slate:
Islanders @ Capitals, 7:00 ET

Canucks @ Ducks, 10:00
Avalanche @ Sharks, 10:30

Games of the Night:
Pittsburgh Penguins (10-2-0) @ Columbus Blue Jackets (6-5-0)

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
PIT- Jordan Staal

Staal will have to step up in Malkin’s absence.
CBJ- Antoine Vermette
He recently had a 5-game point streak, and needs to play better for the Jackets to start winning again.

Projected Goaltenders:
PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury
(09/10 stats: 9-1, 2.07 GAA)
CBJ- Steve Mason (09/10 stats: 5-4, 3.57 GAA)

Injury Report:
PIT-
Evgeni Malkin (shoulder, out), Sergei Gonchar (wrist, out), Tyler Kennedy (undisclosed, doubtful), Max Talbot (shoulder, out), Ben Lovejoy (shoulder, out)
CBJ- Jan Hejda (knee, out), Fredrik Modin (knee, out), Andrew Murray (shoulder, out)

Game Thoughts:
Pittsburgh heads to Columbus without Malkin, and will need others to step up tonight. The Jackets should be jacked up tonight, playing the champs and looking for a win. Mason will have to shake off his recent struggles for them to have a chance. I’ll say they pull the minor upset as they edge the Penguins in OT/shootout.
Prediction: Blue Jackets 3, Penguins 2 (OT)
---
Colorado Avalanche (10-1-2) @ San Jose Sharks (8-4-1)
10:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
COL- Wojtek Wolski

Wolski is starting to heat up again, tallying 6 points in the last 5 games.
SJ- Patrick Marleau
Marleau is one of the hottest players in the league right now with 11 points in the last 6 games.

Projected Goaltenders:
COL- Craig Anderson
(09/10 stats: 10-1-2, 1.97 GAA)
SJ- Evgeni Nabokov (09/10 stats: 7-3-1, 2.66 GAA)

Injury Report:
COL-
John-Michael Liles (shoulder, out), Darcy Tucker (concussion, out), Peter Budaj (swine flu, doubtful), Cody McLeod (eye, out), T.J. Galiardi (ankle, questionable), Ruslan Salei (back, out), Matt Hendricks (groin, questionable), Tom Preissing (knee, out)
SJ- Devin Setoguchi (leg, questionable), Joe Pavelski (foot, out), Torrey Mitchell (knee, out), Ryan Vesce (leg, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
This is a big test for the Avalanche after picking up wins in Calgary and Edmonton. They have the Sharks’ attention, who’ll be looking for payback after getting embarrassed in Denver on opening night. It’s hard to keep picking against Colorado, but I like San Jose’s chances to pull it out.
Prediction: Sharks 3, Avalanche 2

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Capitals over Islanders
Sabres over Maple Leafs
Wild over Rangers
Blackhawks over Canadiens
Stars over Panthers
Ducks over Canucks

Malkin to miss 2-3 weeks with shoulder strain

Pittsburgh was dealt another key injury today as Evgeni Malkin will miss some time with a shoulder strain. He has reportedly played with this injury all season, and was still able to gather 14 points in 12 games. The news comes a week after defenseman Sergei Gonchar broke his wrist… he’ll miss at least another month. Tyler Kennedy is also day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

The 10-2 Penguins are now without their power play quarterbacks. Sidney Crosby, who already has 9 goals, will have to carry the load in the mean time. After back-to-back games this weekend, the Pens travel out west for the always-difficult California trip. If there’s no sort of setback, Malkin should be back during their three-game homestand in mid-November.

This team has a tight grip on the Eastern Conference, and may scale back with both ‘Geno and Gonchar out. Jordan Staal will play a bigger role offensively, likely stepping up onto the 2nd unit. If Alex Goligoski can keep up his torrid pace, and Staal fills in nicely for ‘Geno, the Penguins should be able to stay ahead of the pack. Dan Bylsma will still have some work to do as the team plays a lot of games in November, most coming on the road.

Canada's goalie quandry

Photobucket

Going into this season, Team Canada’s goalie situation for the 2010 Olympics was a simple thought process: who is going to backup Roberto Luongo?? Things have definitely changed through the first month of play. We're just two months away from the roster being set, and the race for the starting job in Vancouver in February is on! IMO Marc-Andre Fleury is leading the pack, followed by Luongo, Martin Brodeur, and Cam Ward (in that order). Two others to keep an eye on would be Steve Mason and Carey Price.

How can you not say Fleury is the clear-cut starter in net at this time?? His numbers are mind-boggling (9-1, 2.07) and is fresh off his Stanley Cup victory. His 2004 collapse at the World Juniors is behind him, looking like the best goalie in the NHL at this moment. Injuries have been a thorn in his side in the past. But if he can stay healthy and keep playing the way he is, he should get the nod between the pipes in Vancouver.

Brodeur and Ward are both viable options to be a backup for Team Canada. I don’t know if GM Steve Yzerman wants to hand the keys to the old guard in Brodeur, but he’d be a great second option. Ward, like the whole Hurricanes team, has struggled coming out of the gates. Though he’s a great playoff performer, he’ll have to turn things around to have a chance at making the team.

And then there’s ‘Bobby Lou’. An inconsistent start coupled with a broken rib may be enough to relegate him to backup this winter. You know he wants to start in Vancouver, but can Yzerman put all the weight on Luongo’s shoulders?? He’s proven the last few years that his shoulders aren’t big enough in crucial moments (i.e. 2nd round vs. Chicago).

Luongo would be the popular choice since the Olympics are taking place in the city where’s he loved. But I don’t know if you can pin the hopes of a country on him. Fleury has been clutch in the playoffs, and is proving that he’s an elite goaltender this season. It’d be a helluva story to see Luongo possibly win gold in Vancouver as the starter. But if Yzerman uses his brain, Fleury may be the best candidate for the job.

Thursday's Links

[The Fourth Period] Coyotes Must Go... A really interesting piece over at TFP by David Bernstein. Phoenix has had attendance struggles since the home opener (which sold out). The recent news of Jerry Moyes selling the team to the NHL means the Coyotes are safe -- for now.

[CNNSI] Strange Tale of the Coyotes... Jon Wertheim has a similar article to Bernstein's... a very interesting article. If it really is as bad as people are saying it is, then why does the NHL keep fighting it?? If there's 10,000 people in the building on a nightly basis, that should be an alarm to the league that hockey can't work in the desert (especially when the team is winning!)

[Yahoo! Puck Daddy] Greg Wyshynski ponders if the lockout changed hockey more than the Miracle on Ice. While I partly agree in that the lockout changed the game more, the 1980 US hockey team's feat was far more important for the game of hockey.

[The Hockey Writers] Why Atlanta should trade Kovalchuk... Brian over at THW has a great breakdown of the Ilya Kovalchuk situation in Atlanta. Should they deal him?? Only on deadline day if the team is out of the playoff picture. They have to get something for him if he opts not to re-sign.

[The Program] These Three Turkeys... The Ducks, Devils, and Wild appear on this week's list. If I could add one to this list, it'd be the Florida Panthers. Tomas Vokoun's GAA is 3.65, and most of the skaters are on the wrong side of the plus/minus rating (by a big margin).

[PredsOnTheGlass] Buddy over at POTG has a good preview for tonight's Predators/Blackhawks game. After last night's win, I think the Preds will get another one tonight. 4-2 is my prediction...

[HockeyBuzz] Eklund throws out another ridiculous rumor of his... this time involving Carey Price. Why in the world would Montreal trade him?? Jaroslav Halak can't survive as a starter, and Price is still the #1 whether he's starting or not. If you ask me, there's a 0% chance Price heads out the door.

[The View from 111] Mark shares his experience of skydiving at Ft. Campbell, KY! It's a good read...

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Islanders 3, Rangers 1
Sabres 4, Devils 1
Blues 5, Hurricanes 2
Coyotes 4, Blue Jackets 1
Penguins 6, Canadiens 1
Senators 4, Panthers 3
Stars 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)
Predators 4, Wild 3
Avalanche 3, Flames 2
Sharks 2, Kings 1 (SO)
Predictions record: 5-5

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Sidney Crosby, PIT
(3 Goals)
Sid had his best performance of the year, netting his third career hat trick. He also recorded nine shots.
2. Dwayne Roloson, NYI (34 Saves, 1 GA)
‘Roli the Goalie’ was all over the place, and led the Islanders to a win over their crosstown rivals.
3. Ryan Miller, BUF (31 Saves, 1 GA)
It was ‘Miller Time’ last night in Newark as the Sabres’ net-minder shutdown the Devils.
Dud of the Night:
Montreal Canadiens
… Going into Pittsburgh with a 4-game win streak, I thought the Habs would have a chance at pulling off the upset. But as it turned out, they didn’t even show up at the arena! It was an awful performance, and they let the Pens’ top line do whatever they’d like.

Tonight’s Slate:
Devils @ Bruins, 7:00 ET
Senators @ Lightning, 7:00
Capitals @ Thrashers, 7:00
Coyotes @ Blues, 8:00
Blackhawks @ Predators, 8:00
Red Wings @ Oilers, 9:30
Canucks @ Kings, 10:30

Games of the Night:
Washington Capitals (7-2-2) @ Atlanta Thrashers (4-3-1)

7:00 ET… TV: NHL Net. (US), Local Networks

Players to watch:
WSH- Alex Ovechkin

‘Ovie’ has scored his 11 goals in a total of 6 games (5 multi-goal games).
ATL- Rich Peverley
‘Pev’ is on a 5-game point streak, and must keep it going with Kovalchuk out.

Projected Goaltenders:
WSH- Jose Theodore
(09/10 stats: 3-2-2, 2.47 GAA)
ATL- Ondrej Pavelec (09/10 stats: 3-2-1, 2.78 GAA)

Injury Report:
WSH-
Eric Fehr (upper body, doubtful), John Erskine (hand, out), Boyd Gordon (back, out), Tomas Fleischmann (blood clot, out), Quintin Laing (swine flu, out)
ATL- Ilya Kovalchuk (foot, out), Nik Antropov (groin, questionable), Kari Lehtonen (back, out), Boris Valabik (ankle, out)

Game Thoughts:
This is a really big game for Atlanta. Even with Kovalchuk and possibly Antropov out, they need to beat the Caps. They went 0-3 last week, and need to gather some momentum. It’ll be difficult tonight as they take on a Caps team that is rolling. I think they’ll be too much once again for John Anderson’s crew.
Prediction: Capitals 5, Thrashers 2
---
Vancouver Canucks (6-6-0) @ Los Angeles Kings (8-4-1)
10:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
VAN- Henrik Sedin

While everyone else is dropping like flies, Henrik has been producing consistently.
LA- Anze Kopitar
Kopitar was held without a point last night, but still leads the league in that department. I smell a big game from him.

Projected Goaltenders:
VAN- Andrew Raycroft
(1st start of the season)
LA- Jonathan Quick (Last night @ SJ: 29 Saves, 1 GA)

Injury Report:
VAN-
Roberto Luongo (rib, out), Daniel Sedin (foot, out), Sami Salo (knee, out), Pavol Demitra (shoulder, out), Kyle Wellwood (toe, doubtful), Ryan Johnson (upper body, doubtful), Rick Rypien (groin, questionable), Jannik Hansen (hand, out)
LA- Justin Williams (upper body, doubtful)

Game Thoughts:
This is going to be a tough one for Vancouver. They’re coming off a tough loss to the Wings on Tuesday, and the news about Luongo’s injury (yet minor) has to have an effect on their psyche. Los Angeles shouldn’t be affected by the back-to-back, and put up a valiant effort at the Shark Tank. Look for the Kings to score in bunches on Raycroft…
Prediction: Kings 5, Canucks 3

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Bruins over Devils
Lightning over Senators
Coyotes over Blues
Predators over Blackhawks
Oilers over Red Wings

Top 5 Surprises of October

There have been a handful of teams that have performed beyond (or below) expectations so far this season. It seems like there’s more than normal, so we’ll countdown the biggest surprises through the first few weeks…

1. Colorado Avalanche
Even GM Greg Sherman and coach Joe Sacco couldn’t have dreamt of this unbelievable start in their first season holding those positions! Colorado was hands down the worst in the Western Conference last year, and made a few small moves this summer while drafting future star Matt Duchene. One of those ‘small’ pickups was goalie Craig Anderson. All he’s done is start every game of Colorado’s 9-1-2 start, playing lights-out between the pipes. Sacco has done an incredible job getting this team to the top of a division where they were picked by many to finish last.
2. Phoenix Coyotes
Another good surprise early on has been the Desert Dogs. Amidst the ownership issues, the ‘Yotes have played outstanding hockey. The mastermind behind all of this is Dave Tippett, who replaced Wayne Gretzky a week before the regular season. His defensive system has worn off on the team, and opponents are having trouble getting pucks past Ilya Bryzgalov. The offense is getting the job done with veterans… not all of those rookies they had a year ago. Even though I’m not ready to say they’re a true playoff contender, Shane Doan & company have been a great story to kick off the 09/10 campaign.
3. Anaheim Ducks
Randy Carlyle’s crew has been surprisingly disappointing. They were expected to compete for a top seed in the West after their solid off-season. But those moves haven’t paid off, and the blue-line losses of Pronger and Beauchemin are stinging badly right now. Another loss that has had an effect is Francois Allaire. The goaltending coach extraordinaire left for Toronto this summer. Hiller and Giguere have struggled in net without him. The Ducks have too much talent to miss the playoffs. If they can’t turn it around soon, you may have to start thinking about Carlyle being on the hot seat.
4. New York Rangers
I honestly didn’t think the Rangers would be any good this season. The defense was hit hard in free agency, the offensive pickups were suspicious, and they made a big risk throwing so much money at Marian Gaborik. Boy was I wrong! This team is legit. I can’t give props to everyone who has made a big impact, but Vinny Prospal and Michael Del Zotto are two that stand out. Prospal, who was bought out by Tampa, followed John Tortorella to the Big Apple. He’s been a force on the power play along with Del Zotto, who’s making a name for himself on the back end. Glen Sather doesn’t look so dumb after all!
5. Carolina Hurricanes
Like Anaheim, the ‘Canes have sputtered out of the gates, raising many questions of whether they’ll bounce back. The injury to Erik Cole has to be playing some sort of a factor, but even his presence may not have been able to help Carolina this month. The offense just hasn’t been there when needed. Eric Staal has been a ghost offensively, producing just 4 points in 10 games. If you look back to last season, they were inconsistent before they fired Peter Laviolette. They caught a lot of breaks in their late-season run, and may not be able to get those same ones this season.

Honorable Mention-
Good: Kings, Sabres
Bad: Red Wings, Bruins

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Capitals 4, Flyers 2
Avalanche 3, Oilers 0
Red Wings 5, Canucks 4
Predictions record: 1-2

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Craig Anderson, COL
(25 Saves, Shutout)
Anderson continues to dominate his opponents with his 2nd shutout of the season in Edmonton.
2. Pavel Datsyuk, DET (2 Goals, 1 Assists)
Datsyuk finally snapped out of his funk with a clutch 3-point performance against the Canucks.
3. Alexander Semin, WSH (1 Goal, 2 Assists)
Semin’s wicked wrister was the game-winner, but his nice set-up to Backstrom was just as important in the Caps’ comeback.
Dud of the Night:
Edmonton Oilers
… They’ve now gone two straight games without a goal, albeit against Luongo and Anderson. Since their wild comeback vs. Columbus last week, the Oilers are 0-3.

Games of the Night:
Buffalo Sabres (6-1-1) @ New Jersey Devils (6-3-0)

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
BUF- Tyler Myers

Myers has played his way into the Calder discussion with 5 points and a +8 rating.
NJ- David Clarkson
Clarkson has taken the next step in his game, scoring 8 points in 9 games thus far.

Projected Goaltenders:
BUF- Ryan Miller
(09/10 stats: 6-0-1, 1.69 GAA)
NJ- Martin Brodeur (09/10 stats: 6-3, 2.42 GAA)

Injury Report:
BUF-
Toni Lydman (groin, doubtful), Andrej Sekera (rib, out)
NJ- Patrik Elias (groin, out), Paul Martin (arm, out), Jay Pandolfo (shoulder, out), Mike Mottau (hip, out)

Game Thoughts:
New Jersey has been great on the road, but subpar on home-ice. They’ll look to turn that around against Buffalo tonight. Ryan Miller & company have won 6 of 7, taking the lead in the Northeast. But Miller has struggled against the Devils, and I think Brodeur will come oh-so-close to tying Terry Sawchuk’s shutout record.
Prediction: Devils 3, Sabres 1

Colorado Avalanche (9-1-2) @ Calgary Flames (7-2-1)
10:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
COL- Matt Duchene

I’m real curious to see how Duchene will fare against the toughest opponent he will face to this point.
CGY- Dion Phaneuf
The ‘Phaneuf Train’ is back! He has 5 goals thus far and is playing like he did a couple years ago.

Projected Goaltenders:
COL- Craig Anderson
(Last night @ EDM: 25 Saves, Shutout)
CGY- Miikka Kiprusoff (09/10 stats: 7-1-1, 3.10 GAA)

Injury Report:
COL-
Darcy Tucker (concussion, out), Peter Budaj (swine flu, out), Cody McLeod (eye, out), John-Michael Liles (shoulder, out), Ruslan Salei (back, out), Matt Hendricks (groin, doubtful), Tom Preissing (knee, out)
CGY- Dustin Boyd (flu, questionable), Brandon Prust (upper body, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
How much longer can the Avalanche keep this up!? They are playing like the best team in the NHL, and completely shutdown the Oilers last night. They’ll take on a different animal tonight, as the Flames have been tremendous at home. Calgary is the team to beat in the division, despite the Avs’ success. Can Colorado send a statement??
Prediction: Flames 3, Avalanche 2
---
Los Angeles Kings (8-4-0) @ San Jose Sharks (7-4-1)
10:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
LA- Alexander Frolov
He has responded very well to his benching with 6 points in 3 games.
SJ- Joe Thornton
‘Jumbo Joe’ has been a machine this year, and has 37 assists in 39 career games against the Kings.

Projected Goaltenders:
LA- Jonathan Quick
(09/10 stats: 8-3, 2.91 GAA)
SJ- Evgeni Nabokov (09/10 stats: 6-3-1, 2.84 GAA)

Injury Report:
LA-
Justin Williams (lower body, out)
SJ- Devin Setoguchi (leg, questionable), Joe Pavelski (foot, out), Torrey Mitchell (knee, out), Ryan Vesce (leg, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
This is the game I’ve been waiting for since San Jose closed out their road trip with a pair of wins. Can they string together some wins… or will they stay inconsistent? Los Angeles will be looking to hang on to their division lead, and beat the Sharks earlier this year in a wild affair. I expect the Sharks to win, but not by much!
Prediction: Sharks 4, Kings 3 (SO)

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Rangers over Islanders
Blues over Hurricanes
Blue Jackets over Coyotes
Penguins over Canadiens
Senators over Panthers
Stars over Maple Leafs
Wild over Predators

Morning Skate: October 27

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Rangers 5, Coyotes 2
Canadiens 3, Islanders 2 (OT)
Blackhawks 3, Wild 1
Maple Leafs 6, Ducks 3
Predictions record: 3-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Tomas Kaberle, TOR
(1 Goal, 4 Assists)
Kaberle’s huge power play night fueled the Leafs’ barrage of the Ducks for their first win.
2. Niklas Hagman, TOR (3 Goals)
Hagman netted his second career hat trick, scoring all three of his goals came on the man advantage.
3. Marian Gaborik, NYR (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
‘Gabby’ scored a pair of power play goals to vault the Rangers to a big win. He left the game early, though, with an apparent groin injury.
Dud of the Night:
Anaheim Ducks
… The Ducks were the victims to the Leafs’ first win of the year, and it was ugly! They gave up 5… count ‘em!... 5 power play goals to the lowly Leafs. This team is in a major slump, and needs to get away from home in the worst way.

Tonight’s Slate:
Flyers @ Capitals, 7:00 ET
Avalanche @ Oilers, 9:30
Red Wings @ Canucks, 10:00

Games of the Night:
Philadelphia Flyers (5-3-1) @ Washington Capitals (6-2-2)

7:00 ET… TV: VERSUS, TSN

Players to watch:
PHI- James van Riemsdyk

The big rookie has been really good since returning from injury (4 pts, 4 games).
WSH- Alexander Ovechkin
‘Ovie’ has dominated Philly in 17 career games (28 points).

Projected Goaltenders:
PHI- Ray Emery
(09/10 stats: 5-2-1, 2.57 GAA)
WSH- Semyon Varlamov (09/10 stats: 4-0, 3.25 GAA)

Injury Report:
PHI-
Simon Gagne (lower body, doubtful), Ryan Parent (groin, out), Blair Betts (shoulder, out)
WSH- Alexander Semin (illness, questionable), John Erskine (hand, out), Tomas Fleischmann (blood clot, out), Boyd Gordon (back, out)

Game Thoughts:
Earlier this season, the Caps and Flyers played in the game of the season (so far), as Philly won 6-5 in overtime. Expect the same kind of game tonight! The Caps are looking to extend their 4-game win streak and send a statement. Varlamov is going to have to be stellar tonight. Last goal wins…
Prediction: Capitals 4, Flyers 3
---
Colorado Avalanche (8-1-2) @ Edmonton Oilers (6-4-1)
9:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
COL- Ryan O’Reilly

The 2nd round pick from this past summer is now riding a 7-game point streak.
EDM- Sam Gagner
He’s jelling on the top line with Penner and Hemsky, and has 14 points in 14 games vs. Colorado.

Projected Goaltenders:
COL- Craig Anderson
(09/10 stats: 8-1-2, 2.14 GAA)
EDM- Nikolai Khabibulin (09/10 stats: 5-3-1, 3.18 GAA)

Injury Report:
COL-
Darcy Tucker (concussion, out), Cody McLeod (eye, out), John-Michael Liles (shoulder, out), Ruslan Salei (back, out), Tom Preissing (knee, out)
EDM- Sheldon Souray and Steve Staios (concussion, out), Fernando Pisani (back, out), Mike Comrie (flu, questionable), Ryan Stone (knee, out)

Game Thoughts:
Colorado faces their toughest test so far this season with a tough four-game slate this week. Edmonton returns home after being outscored 7-2 by the Flames and Canucks this weekend. The Oilers have been great at home when not facing the Flames, and the Avs are due for a loss. Go with the men in blue…
Prediction: Oilers 3, Avalanche 1

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Canucks over Red Wings

Tuesday Morning Videos

Best videos from the past week...

Time to step up!

It's time for these players to step up big-time in the wake of costly injuries to their teams.

Atlanta Thrashers
Injury: Kovalchuk out 4 weeks
(broken foot)
Who needs to step up?? Bryan Little… He had 31 goals and 51 points last year, but has just 5 assists so far. With ‘Kovy’ out, Atlanta will need Little’s scoring touch if they want to hang with the pack in the East.

Boston Bruins
Injury: Savard out 4-6 weeks
(broken foot)
Who needs to step up?? David Krejci… No one will be able to fully replace Savard’s production. But Krejci can come close if he plays to his potential. He had 73 points last year, but has just 5 points. It’s his time to step up.

Detroit Red Wings
Injury: Franzen out 4 months
(torn ACL)
Who needs to step up?? Tomas Holmstrom… He has already filled in nicely for Franzen. Holmstrom is getting up there in age, but can still be effective in front of the net. Detroit needs him to keep it up in Franzen’s absence.

Florida Panthers
Injury: Booth out indefinitely
(concussion)
Who needs to step up?? Nathan Horton… There’s no timetable for David Booth’s return (not yet) after taking that vicious hit from Mike Richards. Booth is arguably the Panthers’ best player, and will be missed. It’s time for Horton to step up, or else he could get traded.

Montreal Canadiens
Injury: Markov out 4 months
(Achilles)
Who needs to step up?? Marc-Andre Bergeron… He has been good in his first three games with Montreal, scoring 2 goals and adding an assist. Markov will be out for at least 3 more months, so Bergeron needs to keep it up offensively.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Injury: Gonchar out 2 months
(broken wrist)
Who needs to step up?? Alex Goligoski… He is starting live up to the hype, already tallying 9 points in 11 games. This is his first full season in the league, and it’s going to be critical for him to continue to fill in nicely for the underrated Gonchar.

Vancouver Canucks
Injury: D. Sedin out 4-6 weeks
(broken foot)
Who needs to step up?? Mikael Sameulsson… Since Daniel went down, Samuelsson has been pretty good. The Canucks’ off-season addition up front has 10 points in 11 games, and jells well with Henrik on the top line.

Power Rankings #4

1. Pittsburgh Penguins (9-2-0), LW: 1
They didn’t look good against the Devils, but they were going to lose at some point. They completely dominated St. Louis, and showed resiliency against Florida. Marc-Andre Fleury has been outstanding, and could be emerging as a legit candidate to start for Team Canada in Vancouver.
2. Colorado Avalanche (8-1-2), LW: 9
All hail Craig Anderson! The free agent signee has to be the Vezina favorite through the first few weeks. Colorado picked up two impressive home wins, but has four big road games coming up. Can they keep their early season success going??
3. Washington Capitals (6-2-2), LW: 3
The Caps scored five goals in Atlanta without Ovechkin, Semin, or Backstrom being involved. They’ve now won four games in a row, ugly or not, and have a big rematch against the Flyers on Tuesday.
4. Calgary Flames (7-2-1), LW: 5
You can make an argument that the Flames are the best team in the West. Going into the season, the team’s offense was the biggest question mark. They have been scoring goals in bunches, especially at home. They host Colorado and Detroit to close out the month before they spend most of November on the road.
5. San Jose Sharks (7-4-1), LW: 6
You have absolutely no idea what Sharks team will show up on a nightly basis. They blew out the Rangers, and then lost 5-2 to the Lightning. I will say, though, that their win over the Flyers was very impressive with Thomas Greiss in net. They have company in the Pacific, though, and will have to work to win the division (contrary to last year).
6. Philadelphia Flyers (5-3-1), LW: 4
Philly is missing that ‘it’ factor thus far. After a great start to the season, Ray Emery has been a bit shaky, and the offense has struggled at times. I am very interested to see how they’ll fare against Washington tomorrow.
7. Chicago Blackhawks (6-3-1), LW: 7
It’s safe to say that Cristobal Huet made a bit of a statement with his shutout of Nashville. He’s been awful this year, but maybe that performance can turn it around. Duncan Keith has been a force this season, finally showing his offensive potential. Will the ‘Hawks be able to hang onto the RFA-to-be??
8. Buffalo Sabres (6-1-1), LW: 15
Ryan Miller is right there with Anderson if you want to talk about early Vezina candidates. He leads the league in save percentage, and has been rock solid. What’s been so impressive with this team is that they keep winning without Thomas Vanek and Derek Roy clicking. Just wait until they get the offense rolling!
9. New Jersey Devils (6-3-0), LW: 11
The road warriors kept rolling with victories in New York and Pittsburgh this week. They’re now 5-0 away from home, and breathing down the necks of the Rangers and Pens. Zach Parise and Travis Zajac have been carrying this offensively, and will need some help if they wish to keep up with the joneses.
10. Vancouver Canucks (6-5-0), LW: 12
Are the Canucks officially back?? I saw an interesting ‘tweet’ last week, stating the Willie Mitchell hit on Toews could have the same affect as the Alex Burrows short-handed goal from last year. The Burrows goal ended the long losing streak last February, and Vancouver came back in Chicago after the Mitchell hit.
11. New York Rangers (7-3-1), LW: 2
Did we reward this team too soon?? John Tortorella’s crew has dropped three in a row, and they’ve looked like a completely different team compared to when they won seven straight. They have a chance to turn things around this week against some weaker opponents.
12. Los Angeles Kings (8-4-0), LW: 21
Now that Anze Kopitar leads the league with 21 points, he’s officially taken the next step towards stardom. They’re the highest-scoring team in the league, and lead the Pacific Division by a point. Terry Murray & company have a big showdown in San Jose on Wednesday!
13. Phoenix Coyotes (6-3-0), LW: 16
Is Phoenix the real deal?? Ask me next week after they play three games against Western opponents who they’d be competing with for a playoff spot. They’ve been a great story thus far, but I’m still not totally sold that they’ll keep it up for 82 games.
14. Columbus Blue Jackets (6-4-0), LW: 8
I praised this team last week, but looked like a different team on their road trip. The goaltending was, well, awful! The defense was also shaky at best. I think they’re really missing the blue-line duo of Hejda and Commodore, who were unsung heroes on last year’s team.
15. Edmonton Oilers (6-4-1), LW: 18
Yes, they lost back-to-back games in Calgary and Vancouver, proving they have some work to do before their put on that level. But a great sign for this team is that they’re top line is coming into top form, and that they’re winning without Sheldon Souray. They have a couple big home games against Colorado and Detroit this week.
16. Dallas Stars (5-2-4), LW: 19
I have been pretty impressed by the Stars so far. 7 of their first 11 games have been on the road, and they’ve played extremely well away from home. Brad Richards and Brendan Morrow haven’t missed a beat from last year’s injuries, and youngsters James Neal and Jamie Benn are showing their great potential.
17. Ottawa Senators (5-2-2), LW: 13
The Sens lost two very winnable home games in different fashion. Their rally against the Preds fell short, and then blew a late 2-goal lead against Boston. If they want to be considered a really good team, Pascal Leclaire’s going have to be more consistent.
18. Montreal Canadiens (5-5-0), LW: 24
They took care of business against the Thrashers and Isles, and then won a thriller against the Rangers. Even though 4 of their 5 wins have come in overtime, putting together a winning streak without Andrei Markov is impressive. Jacques Martin’s gang has an important slate of games coming up.
19. Boston Bruins (5-4-1), LW: 23
I give a lot of credit to Claude Julien for keeping his team on track while facing adversity with the injuries to Savard and Lucic. They played really well this week, and Saturday’s come-from-behind win should give them momentum going into their game vs. New Jersey on Thursday.
20. St. Louis Blues (4-4-1), LW: 14
After beating Detroit twice overseas, this team has lost 5 of 7. Aside from their blowout win in Anaheim, the offense has been atrocious. Through nine games, David Backes’ breakout season looks like a one-year wonder. Blues fans have to be worried that last season’s remarkable comeback was a fluke.
21. Detroit Red Wings (3-4-2), LW: 10
If you were to ask me today who would make the playoffs in the West, Detroit would not be included. Chris Osgood is the same goalie we saw last regular season, and the offense isn’t producing. The Wings have to be frustrated, as they’ve blown a couple late leads over the last couple weeks. They have a critical Western Canada swing this week.
22. Atlanta Thrashers (4-3-1), LW: 20
Even though Atlanta beat Buffalo and New Jersey on consecutive nights away from home, I wasn’t drinking the Koolaid. This was a very telling week, as they fell to Washington and San Jose at home.
23. Anaheim Ducks (3-5-1), LW: 17
What in the world has happened to the Ducks?? Everyone expected them to be a contender to not only win the Pacific, but maybe the conference. They’ve been horrible on home ice, and the goaltending has been less than stellar.
24. Tampa Bay Lightning (3-3-3), LW: 27
The Bolts rise by default this week, but they did handle the Sharks on Thursday. Have you ‘Seen Stamkos’ lately?? He has been a force thus far, adding another element to their offense.
25. Nashville Predators (3-6-1), LW: 26
You have to admit… since they lost a pair of ugly games two weeks ago, they have played much better and have competed in every game. I’m still not sold, though, that they can make the playoffs with the team they have at this moment.
26. Carolina Hurricanes (2-5-3), LW: 22
Here’s another team that we may have overestimated going into the season. Eric Staal isn’t helping his own cause (4 points in 10 games). They can’t buy a win on the road, and it’s time to hit the panic button in Raleigh…
27. Minnesota Wild (3-7-0), LW: 28
Minny picked up a couple big overtime victories this week, but have a tough slate ahead of them. They have yet to win a game on the road, and half of their goals have come via the power play. Ouch.
28. Florida Panthers (2-6-1), LW: 25
When Steven Reinprecht leads your team in goals, you know you’re in trouble! The ‘Cats are one of the worst teams in hockey, and would drop further if it weren’t for the Isles and Leafs.
29. New York Islanders (1-4-4), LW: 29
Congratulations to the Islanders… they won a game! But they followed that up by getting smoked by the Habs, and blowing a 2-goal lead to the Caps at home. And really, they very easily could’ve lost to Carolina.
30. Toronto Maple Leafs (0-7-1), LW: 30
Could Toronto really go oh-for-October?? They’ll have to win on the road to keep that from that happening. Ron Wilson’s crew has four chances this week to get that first ‘W’.

The Week Ahead

Top 5 games I’m looking forward to:
1. Kings @ Sharks (Wednesday)
2. Flyers @ Capitals (Tuesday)
3. Penguins @ Blue Jackets (Friday)
4. Avalanche @ Sharks (Friday)
5. Canucks @ Kings (Thursday)

Two teams to watch:
1. Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver’s riding a nice three-game winning streak coming into the week, and Luongo is starting to turn it on. They have four big games, including a divisional game vs. Colorado on Sunday.
2. Montreal Canadiens
Jacques Martin & company won three in a row at home, and get the Isles at home tonight. But their big test comes this week in Pittsburgh and Chicago. If they can get a win out of that, they’ll have some momentum going into Saturday’s duel with the Leafs.

Canucks 2, Oilers 0
Predictions record: 2-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Roberto Luongo, VAN
(27 Saves, Shutout)
‘Bobby Lou’ picked up his first shutout of the season against Edmonton, and was clutch in the first period.
2. Anze Kopitar, LA (2 Goals)
The Slovenian keeps racking up points, pocketing a pair of goals last night. He leads the NHL with 21 points.
3. Manny Malhotra, SJ (2 Goals)
Malhotra stepped up in the clutch, scoring two goals in the 2nd and dominating the face-off circle.
Dud of the Night:
Derek Dorsett
… After this hip-check by Rob Scuderi on Jason Chimera, Dorsett came off the bench to go after Scuderi when the whistle. C’mon, Derek… you know better than that! Or do you??

Game of the Night:
Phoenix Coyotes (6-3-0) @ New York Rangers (7-3-1)

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
PHX- Shane Doan

The ‘Yotes captain has 7 points in the last 4 games.
NYR- Brandon Dubinsky
After a couple down games, I look for Dubinsky to step it up tonight.

Projected Goaltenders:
PHX- Ilya Bryzgalov
(09/10 stats: 6-2, 1.59 GAA)
NYR- Henrik Lundqvist (09/10 stats: 6-2-1, 2.68 GAA)

Injury Report:
PHX-
Kurt Sauer (headaches, questionable)
NYR- Donald Brashear (soreness, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
The Rangers have suddenly lost three in a row since winning seven straight. Dave Tippett’s Coyotes are hot going into their three-game road trip. I expect it to be a low-scoring affair, with the Blueshirts coming out on top as they’re due for a victory.
Prediction: Rangers 2, Coyotes 1

Blue Jackets 6, Ducks 4
Flames 5, Oilers 2
Predictions record: 10-3-2

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Craig Anderson, COL
(48 Saves, 1 GA)
What a performance from Anderson! 48 saves against Detroit kept Colorado rolling in the West, and he stopped all 21 shots that came his way in the 3rd. Impressive...
2. Michael Cammalleri, MTL (3 Goals, 1 Assist)
Any other night he'd be the #1 star, but he'll have to settle. 'Cammer' netted his first hat trick as a Hab, and scored the winner in OT.
3. Patrick Marleau, SJ (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Marleau came up huge with 3 points in Atlanta. The Sharks needed a win, and Marleau delivered in the clutch.
Dud of the Night:
Ottawa Senators
… A 3-1 lead with a 1:30-plus should be safe. But the Sens snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as they lost in a shootout to Boston (at home). Not a loss you want to have against a divisional opponent. This now makes two disappointing home losses in a row for Ottawa.

Games of the Night:
San Jose Sharks (6-4-1) @ Philadelphia Flyers (5-2-1)
7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
SJ- Dan Boyle

I think Boyle will need to have a good two-way game for the Sharks to win.
PHI- Jeff Carter
He had 11 shots on goal last night, but only came away with 2 assists. Will his luck change tonight?

Projected Goaltenders:
SJ- Evgeni Nabokov
(Last night @ ATL: 24 Saves, 3 GA)
PHI- Brian Boucher (1st start of the season)

Injury Report:
SJ-
Joe Pavelski (foot, out), Torrey Mitchell (knee, out)
PHI- Ryan Parent (groin, out), Blair Betts (shoulder, out)

Game Thoughts:
This should be a very interesting tilt, as these two had two epic battles a year ago. The off-and-on Sharks won in Atlanta last night, while the Flyers have won two in a row after a lengthy layoff. I expect Philly to light the lamp more than a few times tonight, and come away victorious.
Prediction: Flyers 5, Sharks 3

10:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
EDM- Sam Gagner

He’s jelling well next to Penner and Hemsky, and is on a 4-game point streak.

Grabner is starting to get it, and has 3 points in the last 2 games.

Projected Goaltenders:
EDM- Jeff Deslauriers
(09/10 stats: 1-0, 1.00 GAA)
VAN- Roberto Luongo (Last night vs. TOR: 35 Saves, 1 GA)

Injury Report:
EDM-
Sheldon Souray and Steve Staios (concussion, out), Fernando Pisani (back, out), Gilbert Brule and Mike Comrie (flu, questionable), Marc Pouliot (sports hernia, out), Ryan Stone (knee, out)
VAN- Daniel Sedin (foot, out), Pavol Demitra (shoulder, out), Sami Salo (knee, out), Kyle Wellwood (toe, out), Rick Rypien (groin, doubtful), Jannik Hansen (hand, out)

Game Thoughts:
Coming off a tough loss to Calgary, the Oilers will look to rebound against another division foe in Vancouver. Luongo & company beat the Leafs last night, and have been near-flawless at home. Will that success continue?? I think Edmonton has a legit shot, but will come up a bit short in the goaltending battle.
Prediction: Canucks 3, Oilers 2

Blues 3, Wild 1
Avalanche 5, Hurricanes 4
Predictions record: 3-0

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Sidney Crosby, PIT
(2 Goals, SO Goal)
Crosby carried the Pens to a come-from-behind victory last night. His shorty late in regulation plus the shootout tally made the difference.
2. Paul Stastny, COL (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
He was huge in the Avs’ wild win over the Hurricanes.
3. David Perron, STL (1 Goal, 1 Assist)
I thought he had a really strong game, and his slick short-handed goal ended up being the game-winner.

7:00 ET… TV: CBC, Local Networks

Players to watch:

‘Gabby’ is a -3 with just one point in this current 2-game losing streak.
MTL- Scott Gomez
Does Gomes have something up his sleeve for his former mates??

Projected Goaltenders:
NYR- Henrik Lundqvist
(09/10 stats: 6-2, 2.41 GAA)

Injury Report:
NYR-
Donald Brashear (soreness, questionable)
MTL- Andrei Markov (ankle, out), Ryan O’Byrne (knee, out)

Game Thoughts:
How will the Blueshirts respond to their recent two-game skid?? John Tortorella can’t be happy, and will be looking to get the power play going tonight. The Canadiens have won two in a row, both with Halak in net. The Habs have a good chance if they can get to Lundqvist, but I think he’s going to be too tough in this one.
Prediction: Rangers 3, Canadiens 2
---
New Jersey Devils (5-3-0) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (8-1-0)
7:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:

Parise’s coming off a 3-point game against the Rangers, and needs to play really well.

Projected Goaltenders:
NJ- Martin Brodeur
(09/10 stats: 5-3, 2.59 GAA)
PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury (09/10 stats: 8-0, 1.96 GAA)

Injury Report:
NJ-
Patrik Elias (groin, out), Mike Mottau (hip, doubtful)
PIT- Sergei Gonchar (wrist, out), Max Talbot (shoulder, out), Ben Lovejoy (shoulder, out)

Game Thoughts:
Pittsburgh rallied last night to beat Florida, 3-2 in a shootout. They’re taking on a different animal tonight, facing the road-perfect Devils. The Pens may be a popular choice tonight as they’ve now won seven in a row. But I’m going with the mild upset. The Devils are rolling after beating the Rangers, and have had early-season success against the Pens in recent history.
Prediction: Devils 3, Penguins 2 (OT)

Edmonton Oilers (6-2-1) @ Calgary Flames (6-2-1)
10:00 ET… TV: CBC

Players to watch:
EDM- Dustin Penner

He’s finally living up to expectations, picking up 14 points in the first 9 games.
CGY- Jay Bouwmeester
Jay-Bo has been a welcome addition to the Flames thus far with a +5 rating and 6 points.

Projected Goaltenders:
EDM- Jeff Deslauriers
(09/10 stats: 1-0, 1.00 GAA)
CGY- Miikka Kiprusoff (09/10 stats: 6-1-1, 3.23 GAA)

Injury Report:
EDM-
Sheldon Souray and Steve Staios (concussion, out), Fernando Pisani (back, out), Gilbert Brule and Mike Comrie (flu, questionable), Marc Pouliot (sports hernia, out), Ryan Stone (knee, out)
CGY- David Moss (upper body, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
The Battle of Alberta reunites tonight, and it promises to be good one! Both Calgary and Edmonton are coming off big wins over the Blue Jackets. The Oilers have won three in a row, while the Flames have been tough to beat on home ice. I’m guessing Deslauriers will get the nod for the Oil, as Khabibulin could be held out for tomorrow’s game in Vancouver. Either way, I think the Flames take care of their province-mates for the 3rd time this season.
Prediction: Flames 4, Oilers 2

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Senators over Bruins
Flyers over Panthers
Canucks over Maple Leafs
Capitals over Islanders
Sharks over Thrashers
Sabres over Lightning
Wild over Hurricanes
Blues over Stars
Blackhawks over Predators
Coyotes over Kings
Red Wings over Avalanche
Blue Jackets over Ducks

Around the NHL

- The Oilers are to be reckoned with!
Note to the rest of the NHL: the Edmonton Oilers are really good… I mean, scary good! Edmonton has reeled off three consecutive wins, and is hitting on all cylinders going into their big showdowns this weekend against division rivals Calgary & Vancouver. Pat Quinn has his team believing in each other, something Craig MacTavish wasn’t able to get out of them the last couple years.

The Oilers have played seven of their first nine at Rexall… and their true colors may show down the road. But I’m officially on the bandwagon after last night’s exciting 6-4 win over the Jackets, where they rallied from a 4-1 deficit. Nikolai Khabibulin hasn’t been great, but good enough. Once he gets rolling, the conference better look out!

A big reason why the Oilers are looking like a juggernaut is because of the top line. I’ve said all along that Ales Hemsky needs a go-to-guy beside him. He has two of them, now. Dustin Penner has finally burst onto the scene, making it clear that his ongoing riff with MacTavish affected his game. Penner looks like a new player, even before last night’s game (2 goals, 5 points). He leads the team with 14 points, and is looking like the $5 million player Oilers fans have been expecting the last two seasons.

Then you have Sam Gagner. Gagner had a bad sophomore slump last year, and it wasn’t looking good; the high expectations seemed to have gotten to him. But now that he’s centering the top line between Hemsky and Penner, his play is at a different level. If these three can stick together and stay healthy, they could emerge as one of the best top-line combos in the league.

Every year, a lot of people overreact to fast starts from surprise teams. Out of all of them this year, though, Edmonton could be the most legit. They have firepower up front (if Penner keeps it up), an underrated blue-line, and a big-time ‘tender in Khabibulin. Watch out, Western Conference… here come the Oilers!

- Halak pushing Price in Montreal
Could Carey Price really be getting pushed out as Montreal’s starting goaltender?? Not yet. But Jaroslav Halak is making his best case to get a lot more playing time this season. Albeit, he’s only beaten the Thrashers and Islanders in his two recent starts. He’s looked impressive, giving up a total of just two goals. Fantasy owners, beware… Halak is a hot commodity that might be worth picking up. They have five games in the next eight days, and he should see a lot of playing time if the Habs keep winning.

- Can you say road warriors!?
After last night’s solid 4-2 win over the Rangers, the New Jersey Devils are now a perfect 4-0 on the road. They’ve swept the Florida swing, and had a comeback win over the Caps last week. These Devils are obviously not the most talented team in the East… but they work hard and muster enough scoring out of their top producers (Parise, Zajac, etc.). Just wait until Patrik Elias comes back from injury! They’ll look to make it 5 in a row away from home tomorrow in Pittsburgh.

Why a 3-goal lead is the worst in hockey

Most people say a two-goal lead is the worst lead you can have in hockey. I disagree… a three-goal lead is worse. That is the deficit where the team ahead kind of takes the foot off the pedal and attempts to coast to a victory. All it takes for the losing team is a couple quick goals to get back in it. All of a sudden it’s a one-goal game, and the team that thought they had a win sealed up is on its heels trying not to give up the tying goal. And sure enough, they wind up giving that third goal up if there’s enough time left in the game.

We saw three examples of this last night. The Senators, Oilers, and Stars all came back from 3-goal deficits. The Sens and Stars didn’t win, but they forced overtime. The Oilers did come away victorious, scoring 5 unanswered after trailing 4-1. In each case, the teams that were ahead were on their heels once that lead shrunk to one. We’ve also saw many cases of this in the playoffs last year: Carolina vs. New Jersey (Game 4), Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia (Game 6), Calgary vs. Chicago (Game 4), Vancouver vs. Chicago (Game 1) to name a few!

You can debate all you want that a two-goal lead is the worst hockey. You’re just not going to convince… especially after last night!

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:
Canadiens 5, Islanders 1
Devils 4, Rangers 2
Flyers 4, Bruins 3 (SO)
Capitals 5, Thrashers 4
Predators 6, Senators 5 (OT)
Lightning 5, Sharks 2
Oilers 6, Blue Jackets 4
Coyotes 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)
Kings 5, Stars 4 (OT)
Predictions record: 6-2-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Dustin Penner, EDM
(2 Goals, 3 Assists)
Penner was the star of the Oilers’ big comeback at Rexall with 5 points.
2. Anze Kopitar, LA (3 Goals)
Kopitar’s great start continued with a hat trick in LA’s win over Dallas.
3. Shea Weber, NSH (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
I know Dumont had 5 points (4 A), but Weber’s pair of goals were gigantic for a Preds team that needed 2 points in the worst way.
Dud of the Night:
Nashville’s 3rd period
… The Predators go into the 3rd period with a 3-0 lead. That’s going to be a safe lead, right?? Well the Senators stormed back to tie the game at 3 before the 10-minute mark of the period. The Preds couldn’t hold a pair of one-goal leads late in the 3rd, and gave up a shorthanded goal with 1.6 seconds remaining (to Chris Phillips, nonetheless). Nashville luckily went on to win 6-5 in OT. The 3rd period has not been kind to Barry Trotz’s crew, and that’s something that needs to be fixed sooner rather than later.

Tonight’s Slate:
Panthers @ Penguins, 7:00 ET
Wild @ Blues, 8:00
Hurricanes @ Avalanche, 9:00

Game of the Night:
Carolina Hurricanes (2-4-2) @ Colorado Avalanche (6-1-2)

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
CAR- Eric Staal

Carolina’s leader is coming off a 2-point outing… can he carry it over??
COL- Ryan O’Reilly
The 2nd-rounder from this year’s draft is on a 5-game point streak.

Projected Goaltenders:
CAR- Cam Ward
(09/10 stats: 2-4-2, 2.47 GAA)
COL- Peter Budaj (1st start of season)

Injury Report:
CAR-
Erik Cole (leg, out), Tim Gleason (upper body, questionable)
COL- John-Michael Liles (shoulder, doubtful), Cody McLeod (eye, questionable), Ruslan Salei (back, out), Tom Preissing (knee, out)

Game Thoughts:
It’s kind of a quiet night around the league without a marquee game. Colorado comes home on top of the West and looking to rebound from an overtime loss to Minnesota. Even with Budaj starting, I think the Avs will edge the struggling ‘Canes in a low-scoring affair.
Prediction: Avalanche 2, Hurricanes 1

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Penguins over Panthers
Blues over Wild

Thursday's Links

[The Program] These Three Turkeys... Lecavalier, Huet, and Stastny show up on this week's list. All good choices, but how about Steve Sullivan?? 2 points in 8 games, even though he hasn't been with both Arnott and Dumont much this year.

[The Hockey News] Top 10 Bargain Players... Contrary to my 'Top 5 Overpaid Players' post yesterday, THN's John Grigg has a nice list of players who are a bargain!

[Crash the Crease] Kostitsyn/Gomez fight led to demotion... CTC has a link to an MSN article that states that a big reason to Sergei Kostitsyn's demotion was a physical altercation between him and Scott Gomez. Interesting news... Kostitsyn's stock is shot if it wasn't already!

[The Hockey Writers] Hossa or Havlat??... Jim Neveau at THW debates whether Chicago should've kept Martin Havlat over Marian Hossa. I've thought since day one that they were making a mistake letting Havlat go.

[SI.com] Jim Kelley says the NHL needs to look into 'crease-crashers'! I agree with Kelley to an extent. If there's a loose puck in the crease, the players have a right to do whatever it takes to score. If the goalie has covered up (or in the process of), I think players should be disciplined for it. Either way, it's all subjective by the officials.

Last night’s scores:

Bruins 3, Predators 2
Islanders 4, Hurricanes 3 (SO)
Sabres 5, Panthers 2
Wild 3, Avalanche 2 (SO)
Canucks 3, Blackhawks 2
Stars 4, Ducks 2
Predictions record: 3-2-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Mikko Koivu, MIN
(1 Goal, 1 Assist, SO Goal)
A day after being named captain, Koivu scored the game-tying goal, and the lone shootout goal to lift the Wild to their 2nd win.
2. Mikael Samuelsson, VAN (1 Goal, 1 Assist)
Samuelsson continues to be one of the better Canucks, scoring the game-winner late in the 3rd.
3. Marty Turco, DAL (24 Saves, 2 GA)
He didn’t have his best game, but he stood tall in the key moments to give the Stars a big road win.
Dud of the Night:
Florida’s 1st period
… The Panthers weren’t ready for what hit them in the opening moments against Buffalo. Grier and Pominville chased Scott Clemmensen within the first two minutes, and Buffalo scored five goals in a crazy opening frame. C’mon Panthers…

Games of the Night:
New Jersey Devils (4-3-0) @ New York Rangers (7-2-0)

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
NJ- Travis Zajac
He has started out well to start this year, and needs to continue that success.
NYR- Michael Del Zotto
The red-hot rookie tallied a goal and assist in their last meeting.

Projected Goaltenders:
NJ- Martin Brodeur
(09/10 stats: 4-3, 2.68 GAA)
NYR- Henrik Lundqvist (09/10 stats: 6-1, 2.33 GAA)

Injury Report:
NJ-
Patrik Elias (groin, out)
NYR- Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan (flu, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
The ‘Battle for the Hudson’ is renewed as the Devils head to MSG to face the Blueshirts. Lundqvist & company got the best of New Jersey a couple weeks ago, winning 3-2. John Tortorella was not happy how they lost to San Jose on Monday, and I’m sure they’ll be rarin’ to go tonight. The Devils are 3-0 on the road, but I don’t think that continues here.
Prediction: Rangers 4, Devils 2
---
Detroit Red Wings (3-3-1) @ Phoenix Coyotes (5-2-0)
10:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
DET- Henrik Zetterberg

Zetterberg has torched Phoenix in his career, and has 4 points in the last 3 games.
PHX- Ed Jovanovski
‘Jovo’ has been a big part to the Yotes’ success, and needs to have a strong 2-way game tonight.

Projected Goaltenders:
DET- Chris Osgood
(09/10 stats: 3-2-1, 3.21 GAA)
PHX- Ilya Bryzgalov (09/10 stats: 5-1, 1.14 GAA)

Injury Report:
DET-
Pavel Datsyuk (upper body, probable), Johan Franzen (knee, out), Andreas Lilja (head, out)
PHX- Kurt Sauer (headaches, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
How about these Coyotes, eh?? Dave Tippett has done a remarkable job, and the whole team has stepped up despite the off-ice troubles. Both teams are rested, so the first 10 minutes are key tonight. Phoenix will come out on fire, looking to get up early. If Detroit holds ‘em off, they’ll be fine. The Wings have had a lot of success in the desert since the lockout.
Prediction: Red Wings 3, Coyotes 2

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Canadiens over Islanders
Flyers over Bruins
Capitals over Thrashers
Predators over Senators
Sharks over Lightning
Oilers over Blue Jackets
Kings over Stars

Top 5 Overpaid Players

These players don’t exactly give you ‘bang for your buck’. It was tough to narrow this list down to just five, and something like this is pretty subjective. Here are the five NHL players that I think are the most overpaid…

1. Wade Redden, NYR
09/10 Salary: $8 million
Cap hit: $6.5 million
Years left: 5 years
Redden is making disgusting money, well beyond his worth. Glen Sather gave him a 6-year deal last summer, and it will go down as one of the worst contracts ever. His contract will hurt the Rangers when the salary cap goes down next summer. He’s off to an ok start this season, but that doesn’t hide his 26-point campaign from a year ago. Not exactly the numbers you want from your $8 million offensive defenseman.

2. Martin Erat, NSH
09/10 Salary: $5.25 million
Cap hit: $4.5 million
Years left: 6 years
The fact that he’s the highest-paid Predator should speak for itself. I don’t know what GM David Poile was thinking the day he offered this extension, but bravo to Erat for taking it. Erat honestly doesn’t deserve this type of money. He benefits from the success of others, and doesn’t take it upon himself to make something happen. And when he does try, it never works. If he spent as much time working in the offensive zone as he does dipsy-doodling in the neutral zone, he might be able to score a bit more. As a Preds follower, I’m sick of his act.

3. Scott Gomez, MTL
09/10 Salary: $8 million
Cap hit: $7.357 million
Years left: 5 years
Here’s another poor contract dealt out by Glen Sather. Gomez is a solid player and all, but he’s not an $8 million-type player. I’ve never thought highly of him, and he peaked in 2005/06 (84 points), by far his career-high. He doesn’t have that great of a two-way game, further justifying how bad this contract is. I was surprised the Habs took on this contract via trade, and it will come back to bite ‘em in the rear sooner or later.

4. Cristobal Huet, CHI
09/10 Salary: $5.625 million
Cap hit: $5.625 million
Years left: 3 years
Huet definitely earned his money at the end of the 07/08 season when he helped Washington get into the playoffs as a deadline pickup. But the Frenchman has not started more than 40 games in a season, and can be a total sieve on any given night. The fact that the ‘Hawks should be looking for a way to get rid of him less than a year and a half after signing him tells you all you need to know. Everyone knows his weakness between the pipes (high glove), and he couldn’t stop a bouncing puck out of the corner on Saturday.

5. Chris Drury, NYR
09/10 Salary: $8.05 million
Cap hit: $7.05 million
Years left: 3 years
Glen Sather strikes again! If you solely look at on-ice production, there’s no way Drury can be worth upwards of $8 mil. He’s a #2 center that scores around 60 points every year. He hasn’t come close to the player he was in Buffalo in the 06/07 season. I think he’s a good captain in this league, which is why he’s not higher on this list. I just can’t justify why he’s making that much for what he does (production wise).

Honorable mention:
Brian Campbell, CHI ($7.14M)
Roman Hamrlik, MTL ($5.5M)
Shawn Horcoff, EDM ($7M)
Brian Rolston, NJ ($5M)
Michal Rozsival, NYR ($6M)
Debate away......

B's and Pens suffer key injuries

The old saying is ‘when it rains it pours’. That’s what the Bruins are experiencing this season. The news got worse this morning as it was determined that star center Marc Savard will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. It’s just another injury that the Bruins are going to have to put up with, and this one will hurt the most. Savard is their leader offensively, and is really the only one having any kind of success for the B’s up front through 7 games. He’s been well over a point-per-game player since arriving in Boston.

This isn’t necessarily a devastating blow for the B’s, as he’ll only miss a month or so. But the fact that Milan Lucic is already out for the same length of time makes you wonder how they’ll survive offensively. If you go back to last year, they are now without their top line (Kessel-Savard-Lucic). This is an opportunity for Patrice Bergeron or David Krejci to step up and see more ice-time. It’s also a chance for the others in the division (Buffalo or Ottawa) to take off.

With a great defense, Boston should be able to keep their heads above water… especially if Tim Thomas can turn it around. They have to start right away without Savard and Lucic tonight against Nashville, and tomorrow in Philadelphia.
---
UPDATE: Gonchar breaks wrist, out up to 8 weeks
As much as Savard means to the Bruins, Gonchar that much more to Pittsburgh's blue-line. He already has eight points, and is the backbone to the power play's success. The Pens have won eight of their first nine games, looking like the best team in the league. How will they keep it up without Gonchar?? Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski will have to pick up the slack offensively.
It's no coincidence that when Gonchar came back from his injury last year, the Pens took off and won the Cup. He missed the first 2/3 of the season (approximately) with a shoulder injury. 'Gonch' came back at the same Dan Bylsma took over behind the bench. The veteran defenseman will be sorely missed by the Penguins.
