Top 5 moments of 2009

Special moments can come in many different ways. They can come as a goalie breaks a historic record. They can come as a team defies the odds in Game 7. They can come as the most decorated franchise celebrates their 100th anniversary. They can come as a team pulls off a feat that is totally rare – scoring with 0:00 on the clock. They can even come as a historic franchise goes from rock-bottom to cloud nine. 2009 delivered many memorable moments, and here are five that stand out the most. Let’s just let the videos do the talking!

1. Penguins win Stanley Cup in Game 7

2. Brodeur breaks all-time wins record

3. Jussi Jokinen beats the buzzer vs. New Jersey

4. Canadiens’ on-ice Centennial celebration

5. Blackhawks advance to conference finals

Guest blog: Classic comes to Fenway!

What does the Winter Classic mean to the city of Boston?

This is the question I was posed when writing this blog entry. I chewed on it, thought about it for a few days. I've been caught up in the hype, the live webcam, the pre-Classic skates, the scalping scandals, the commercialism and promotion that is surrounding this understandably epic game. And these are, for the most part, all positive things (minus the scalping!). My heart swells when I see those gold-and-brown toques around the Boston area. This game means publicity for our improving hockey club and has the potential to draw even more fans.

These are all good things – but I don't think they really get at the heart of what this game really means.

Any Red Sox fan can tell you about the history of the ballpark; about Babe Ruth and David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez and Jim Rice and Bill Buckner; about years like 1918, 1986 and 2004 and 2007. Any Bruins fan can tell you about the history of this franchise; about the five Stanley cups; about Ray Bourque and Bobby Orr and Eddie Shore; about Cam Neely and Sergei Samsonov, Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron. Last year, we saw a merging of these two great North American sports at Chicago's Wrigley Field. Both of those teams have just as rich a history as our teams here in Boston. Those of us who follow both sports could only dream of having the timelines of our own historic franchises woven together on a day the way they were woven at Wrigley.

It was rumored in April, confirmed in June, promoted through the summer at Sox games. Bruins jerseys started appearing randomly in the stands just like Sox hats have been interloping in the Garden for years. Instead of being flooded by Red Sox fans, crazed and sweating and celebrating in the warm October nights in 2004 and 2007, Kenmore Square will be colored by a sea of black and gold (and brown), freezing temperatures far below anything typically experienced by our Red Sox, and an aura of something fresh, something new; a new piece of history being written. Fenway is a ballpark awash in brilliant colors; there's something romantic about the sharp contrast of red seats, green grass, green walls, and blue sky; the smells and sounds and sights of thousands of people uniting behind a team on a hot summer day.

Now take that image and flip it on its head.

Instead of stretching out at Fenway with a hot dog and a beer in your shorts and T-shirt, you're huddling with your neighbors. Colors are muted; the inside of the park seemingly brighter than ever, the ground covered in snow and an oval of ice, the bright green of the grass and brown of the dirt toed by batters and pitchers like a dream, the possibliity of snow making this image of Fenway on Ice even more surreal. Baseball's coming back, Sox fans, but first we have the Winter Classic; hockey on a baseball field. It's not something that's happened before in Boston, and who knows if it will happen again? The important thing will be the incredible feeling of two history-rich teams colliding. Savor it, sports fans.

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Flyers 6, Rangers 0
Devils 2, Penguins 0
Canadiens 2, Lightning 1 (OT)
Bruins 4, Thrashers 0
Avalanche 4, Senators 3
Oilers 3, Maple Leafs 1
Flames 2, Kings 1
Sharks 5, Capitals 2
Predictions record: 7-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Martin Brodeur, NJ
(32 Saves, Shutout)
Brodeur picked up his 2nd shutout in as many weeks against Pittsburgh.
2. Simon Gagne, PHI (3 Goals, 1 Assist)
In his 6th game back from injury, Gagne netted a huge hat trick against the Rangers.
3. Joe Pavelski, SJ (2 Goals)
‘Joe Pa’ made a statement for his inclusion on Team USA with a pair of goals.
Honorable Mention: C. Price, T. Rask, P. O’Sullivan, M. Leighton, R. Bourque, M. Kiprusoff
Dud of the Night:
New York Rangers
… Philly waltzed in and out of MSG with an easy 6-0 win over the Blueshirts. After Claude Giroux put the Flyers up 3-0, John Tortorella took a timeout and chewed out his team; it obviously didn’t work. It looked like everything was going in the right direction for the Rangers… but last night was a step back.

Thornton has struggled against Phoenix this year… will that change tonight?
PHX- Scottie Upshall
Upshall has come up big for the ‘Yotes recently with 8 points in the last 6 games.

Projected Goaltenders:
SJ- Thomas Greiss
(09/10 stats: 3-3-0, 2.79 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
These two faced off in San Jose on Monday, with the Sharks coming out on top via the shootout. After beating the Caps last night, Todd McLellan’s gang will have to make the trip to the desert in less than 24 hours. That’s a tough rebound, especially against a team that has won ten straight in their own barn. Look for Bryzgalov and his 1.60 home GAA to come through in the end.

Projected Goaltenders:
NJ- Martin Brodeur
(Last night vs. PIT: 32 saves, 0 GA)
CHI- Cristobal Huet (09/10 stats: 17-8-2, 2.13 GAA)

CHI- Dave Bolland (back, out), Adam Burish (knee, out)

Game Thoughts:
This makes it two straight nights where we’ve had a potential Stanley Cup preview! The Devils make the trip to Chicago after shutting out the Pens last night. Joel Quenneville’s club has been dynamite at home this year, and is firing on all cylinders. This will a great game, and I think the ‘Hawks get to Brodeur.
Prediction: Blackhawks 4, Devils 2

Reaction to Team Canada

Here are the 23 players named to Team Canada’s Olympic roster by Steve Yzerman:
Forwards
Sidney Crosby
Jarome Iginla
Jonathan Toews
Rick Nash
Eric Staal
Mike Richards
Brendan Morrow
Dany Heatley
Joe Thornton
Ryan Getzlaf
Patrick Marleau
Corey Perry
Patrice Bergeron
Defensemen
Chris Pronger
Shea Weber
Brent Seabrook
Scott Niedermayer
Dan Boyle
Drew Doughty
Duncan Keith
Goaltenders
Martin Brodeur
Roberto Luongo
Marc-Andre Fleury

In my roster prediction last night, I had Mike Fisher, Martin St. Louis, Shane Doan, and Jay Bouwmeester on the team instead of Patrice Bergeron, Eric Staal, Mike Richards, and Drew Doughty.

I like the roster that Yzerman has put together, but would’ve liked to see Jay-Bo and St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong, Doughty has definitely earned his Olympic bid; Bouwmeester is a versatile defenseman with more experience. And St. Louis brings a veteran presence who can be slotted on any line. But that’s why I’m not officially picking the team.

Looking at the possible line combinations… I think you could see Crosby, Iginla, and Nash on the top line; Toews or Staal put alongside Getzlaf and Perry; the Sharks trio of Marleau, Heatley, and Thornton on the ‘third’ line; Morrow, Richards, and maybe Toews on the fourth line. I don’t know what the strategy will be with Bergeron, whether if he’s the 4th line center or the 13th forward. We’ll wait and see.

On defense, I like how Pronger and Niedermayer along with Keith and Seabrook can be blue-line pairings. Which leaves us with Boyle and Weber as another pairing, with Doughty as the potential extra D-man.

We can expect to see Luongo and Brodeur to battle it out over the next four to six weeks for the starter spot. I have a hunch Brodeur will get the nod. Fleury should be the emergency net-minder.

The snub list is too long to dive in to… but I know Mike Green is not a happy camper today. Shall injuries occur next month, though, Yzerman has a lot of choices as far as replacements go.

Coach Mike Babcock certainly will have some tough decisions in a month or so, but it’s a great problem to have. There’s no reason why this team shouldn’t win Gold on home-ice in Vancouver. Every ingredient is included on Team Canada, and will be heavy favorites when February rolls around.

Top 5 upsets of the decade

One of the best things about the Stanley Cup Playoffs is that anybody can beat anybody on any given night… which means upsets happen pretty often (compared to other sports). It’s upsets like these that have made the playoffs so exciting this decade…

1A. #8 Oilers over #1 Red Wings (‘06 WCQF)
There was no way the Oilers could win this series. Dave Lewis’ Red Wings were head-above-shoulders the best team in the NHL. With 124 points, the Wings ran away with the Presidents’ Trophy. Steve Yzerman, Nicklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, and Brendan Shanahan were just going to be too much. On paper, the Oilers, who clinched their playoff spot in Game #81, didn’t have a chance.

But once the series started, Detroit realized they’d be in a dogfight. Chris Pronger and the Oilers went toe-to-toe with them in the first four games, forcing a 2-2 series tie. After a crucial road win in Game 5, 8th-seeded Edmonton had a chance to pull off the massive upset at home. It was a game for the ages, but the Oilers needed some 3rd period magic to finish off Detroit. They got it behind the heroics of Hemsky and Pisani. Hemsky’s game-winner with 1:06 to go in Game 6 will forever be remembered by Oilers fans (a goal that puts a smile on my face just think about it!)

Craig MacTavish’s gang went on to the Stanley Cup Finals that spring, and took the Hurricanes to a seventh game. This Edmonton team reeled off one of the most magical playoff runs in playoff history, as the team took the country by storm with Rexall rockin’ on a nightly basis. They not only stunned the whole NHL… they sent shockwaves through the world of sports.

1B. #7 Mighty Ducks over #2 Red Wings (‘03 WCQF)
This series didn’t technically go down as a 1 vs. 8 matchup, but it certainly had the David vs. Goliath feeling to it. Goliath had just won the Stanley Cup and was heavy favorites to breeze through their first round series against the pesky Mighty Ducks in 2003. David had other ideas.

J.S. Giguere put together a great 02/03 regular season campaign; he was Anaheim’s only chance at winning the series. He had to play out of his mind… and he did. Giguere took the Mighty Ducks on a memorable ride in 2003, and it all started with a sweep of the defending champs. Game 1 went into triple overtime, where Paul Kariya would lift them with the winner. After stunning the Wings again in Games 2 and 3, Steve Rucchin’s overtime goal in Game 4 completed the improbable sweep at the Pond.

This was certainly one of the more memorable upsets in playoff history. And it was the way Mike Babcock’s Mighty Ducks outworked the Wings, just wanting it more in the end, that impressed so many. Carried by that style of play, the Mighty Ducks outlasted its opponents all the way to Game 7 of the finals, where they were beaten by a better Devils team. This Anaheim team is more proof of how David has a better shot at Goliath than people think…

3. #8 Canadiens over #1 Bruins (‘02 ECQF)

Jose Theodore, who won the Hart AND Vezina Trophies in 2002, backstopped the Canadiens to a stunning upset of rival Boston in the first round. Montreal beat the B’s in six games, inspired by the surprise return of Saku Koivu, who beat his bout with cancer. Theodore was brilliant in Games 5 and 6 as the Habs manufactured enough goals to pull off the unlikely upset. This series has a chapter by itself in the prolonged novel that is the classic Habs/Bruins rivalry.

4. #7 Kings over #2 Red Wings (‘01 WCQF)
Los Angeles had a fighter’s chance heading into their first round date with Detroit in ’01, but those chances took a turn for the worse after Scotty Bowman’s Red Wings took a commanding 2-0 series lead. With their backs against the wall in Game 4 – down 3-0 in the 3rd, and 2-1 in the series – the Kings pulled off one of the best comebacks the NHL has ever seen. They rallied late to tie the game, and stole the overtime win. L.A. used that momentum to win Game 5 in Detroit, and Adam Deadmarsh put an end to series with his OT winner in Game 6. Truly an epic series, thanks to the unforgettable comeback in Game 4.

5. #8 Ducks over #1 Sharks (‘09 WCQF)
Let’s be honest… Anaheim was no 8 seed. Randy Carlyle’s crew struggled in the 2nd half, but had the talent to be a 4 or 5 seed. They took on in-state rival San Jose, who won the Presidents’ Trophy, and appeared to be the Cup favorite. But the Sharks partied a little too much with that useless trophy, and came out flat in Games 1 and 2 – losing both. They would end up making a series out of it, forcing a Game 6 in Anaheim; but the Ducks looked like better, stronger team in this series, and never relinquished their series choke-hold. San Jose’s playoff misery continued, while Anaheim pulled off yet another epic upset.

Just missing the cut…
#8 Sharks over #1 Blues (’00 WCQF)
#7 Canadiens over #2 Bruins (’04 ECQF)
#7 Mighty Ducks over #1 Stars (’03 WCSF)
#6 Hurricanes over #1 Bruins (’09 ECSF)
#7 Avalanche over #2 Stars (’06 WCQF)

Ducks 4, Wild 2
Predictions record: 4-2

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Drew Stafford, BUF
(2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Sunday's healthy scratch sparked Stafford, who tallied 3 points, including a goal via the penalty shot in the Sabres’ comeback win.
2. Bobby Ryan, ANA (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Ryan’s skill-set was on display last night with his big 3-point game.
3. Steve Ott, DAL (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Ott was everywhere for the Stars, and scored the game-winner in the 3rd.
Honorable Mention: P. Lalime, D. Roloson, S. Weber, P. Kane, J. LaBarbera
Dud of the Night:
Pittsburgh’s big letdown
… The defending champs were up 3-0 in the 2nd period, and even chased Ryan Miller – the best goalie in the league right now. But Crosby and company couldn’t hold on to that lead, as Stafford and Lalime led Buffalo to a memorable comeback win. More proof that a 3-0 lead is the worst in hockey…

NJ- Zach Parise
Parise broke out of his slump with 2 goals Monday… can he carryover that success?

Projected Goaltenders:

Game Thoughts:
After their collapse in Buffalo last night, the best thing the Pens can do is play right away and have amnesia. But they are facing the red-hot Devils. New Jersey has had the Pens’ number this season, and has played great at home lately. Look for Pittsburgh to make this a very good game (as expected), but I like the Devils with the extra day of rest.

Players to watch:

Green's last-ditch effort to make Team Canada fell short... how will he respond??
SJ- Joe Pavelski
‘Joe Pa’ is an x-factor tonight; he usually plays better at home.

Projected Goaltenders:

(09/10 stats: 3-2-0, 2.82 GAA)
SJ- Evgeni Nabokov (09/10 stats: 21-5-7, 2.30 GAA)

SJ- Brad Staubitz (face, out), Jody Shelley (soreness, out)

Game Thoughts:
Is tonight’s game in the Bay Area a Stanley Cup preview?? Probably not, but it’s fun to think about. Last year, their meeting at the Tank was a Sharks beat-down (7-2), but the Caps got them back this past October in D.C. San Jose is on a 5-game win streak, while Bruce Boudreau doesn’t know what to expect out of his goaltending. Because of that, I like Team Teal…
Prediction: Sharks 4, Capitals 2

Top 5 Game 7's of the decade

Game seven… are there any two words in sports that hold a greater meaning?? I didn’t think so. This decade, there were 36 of them in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, each having its own defining moment. Five of those 36 went to overtime, and all the road team won all five. Today we look at the five best Game 7’s from this decade…

1. Pittsburgh @ Detroit – 2009 Stanley Cup Finals
Last year’s Cup Finals of Red Wings/Penguins was one of the better playoff series in recent memory. The home team won each of the first six games, and not many pundits gave the Pens much of a chance to win Game 7 at the Joe. But Dan Bylsma’s defied the odds – again – as they took down mighty Detroit 2-1. Pittsburgh’s Max Talbot scored both goals as they held on without Sidney Crosby, who suffered a leg injury in the 2nd period. Marc-Andre Fleury made a game-saving stop at the buzzer to give the Pens their first Stanley Cup since the Mario Lemieux days in the early 90’s.

2. Edmonton @ Carolina – 2006 Stanley Cup Finals
On paper, an Oilers/Hurricanes Cup Final probably isn’t so attractive. But when you consider the heart and passion they displayed throughout the series, along with the electrifying atmospheres in Raleigh and Edmonton, it was one of the most watchable (and memorable) series I can remember. The ‘Canes scored very early in the 1st, and again in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead into the 3rd. Fernando Pisani’s goal pulled the Oilers within one, but was stoned by Cam Ward in the closing moments. Carolina’s Justin Williams scored an empty-netter as the Hurricanes claimed their first ever Stanley Cup.

3. Carolina @ New Jersey – 2009 Eastern Conf. Quarterfinals
Down 3-2 with less than two minutes remaining, the Canes’ hopes were slipping away in Newark. But just mere minutes later, Devils fans had experienced a nightmare. Jussi Jokinen tied the game at 3 with 1:20 to go. Brodeur and company probably thought ‘Ok, let’s get to overtime and win it then.’ 48 seconds later, Eric Staal snapped a wrister by the most decorated goaltender in NHL history. Carolina won the game 4-3, pulling off the comeback simply known as ‘The Shock at the Rock’.

4. Minnesota @ Colorado – 2003 Western Conf. Quarterfinals
Patrick Roy and the Avalanche were in complete control, holding a 3-1 series lead against 7th-seeded Minnesota. But the Wild managed to knot the series with a pair of 3-2 wins, including Game 6 in overtime thanks to Richard Park. That set the stage for an unexpected Game 7 in Colorado. The Avs were huge favorites, despite the Wild holding all the momentum. Marian Gaborik tied the game at 2 late in the 3rd, and Andrew Brunette broke the Avs’ hearts in overtime. That game wound up being Roy’s last in the NHL.

5. Calgary @ Vancouver – 2004 Western Conf. Quarterfinals
Another chapter was added to the Flames/Canucks rivalry with this epic 7-game series in 2004. There were some crazy games, and the road team won five of the seven. Calgary led 1-0 after the 2nd period by virtue of a Jarome Iginla breakaway goal. With the Flames holding a 2-1 lead with under a minute to go, the Canucks went on the power play – a golden opportunity to tie the game – but committed a penalty with 20-some seconds remaining. So with an empty net, Matt Cooke jammed home a rebound with 5.7 seconds left, sending GM Place into a wild frenzy. But less than two minutes into the first overtime, Martin Gelinas scored on the power play to advance the Flames to round two.

Honorable Mention:
2000 Eastern Conf. Finals – New Jersey @ Philadelphia
2000 Western Conf. Finals – Colorado @ Dallas
2001 Eastern Conf. Semifinals – Pittsburgh @ Buffalo
2001 Stanley Cup Finals – New Jersey @ Colorado
2002 Western Conf. Semifinals – San Jose @ Colorado
2003 Western Conf. Semifinals – Minnesota @ Vancouver
2003 Eastern Conf. Finals – New Jersey @ Ottawa
2004 Eastern Conf. Finals – Philadelphia @ Tampa Bay
2004 Stanley Cup Finals – Calgary @ Tampa Bay
2006 Eastern Conf. Finals – Buffalo @ Carolina
2007 Western Conf. Quarterfinals – Dallas @ Vancouver
2008 Eastern Conf. Quarterfinals – Philadelphia @ Washington
2009 Eastern Conf. Quarterfinals – NY Rangers @ Washington

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Devils 3, Thrashers 2
Hurricanes 6, Capitals 3
Blue Jackets 1, Red Wings 0 (OT)
Lightning 2, Bruins 1
Senators 4, Canadiens 2
Flames 4, Oilers 1
Sharks 3, Coyotes 2 (SO)
Wild 4, Kings 3
Predictions record: 4-3-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Eric Staal, CAR
(2 Goals, 3 Assists)
The Staal/Jokinen/Cullen line was firing on all cylinders in D.C., and Staal picked up 5 big points in the upset.
2. Rene Bourque, CGY (3 Goals)
Bourque scored a goal shorthanded, on the power play, and at even strength in the Flames’ win in Edmonton.
3. Steve Mason, CBJ (34 Saves, Shutout)
‘Mase’ was terrific vs. the Wings last night, putting in his best outing of the season.
Honorable Mention: E. Belanger, Z. Parise, M. Smith, J. Jokinen, C. Neil, J. Howard, M. Kiprusoff

Last Ten: Penguins (6-3-1) … Sabres (6-2-2)
Away/Home: Penguins (13-5-0) … Sabres (12-5-4)
Season Series: 1-0 Penguins

Players to watch:
PIT- Evgeni Malkin

‘Geno has 4 points in the last 2 games, and has fared well vs. Buffalo in his short career.
BUF- Tim Connolly
Connolly had 3 big points in St. Louis, and is on a 3-game point streak.

Projected Goaltenders:
PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury
(09/10 stats: 22-10-1, 2.44 GAA)
BUF- Ryan Miller (09/10 stats: 21-8-3, 1.98 GAA)

Injury Report:
PIT-
Mark Eaton (lower body, questionable)
BUF- Derek Roy (upper body, doubtful), Patrick Kaleta (lower body, questionable), Nathan Gerbe (groin, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
This is a big game for the Sabres. They dropped a shootout decision to these Pens a week or so ago, and need to get more separation from Boston. Crosby and company are coming off a tough loss to the Leafs, looking to rebound with a ‘W’. It will be a close game, and I think the Sabres pull it out in overtime.
Prediction: Sabres 3, Penguins 2 (OT)

Vancouver Canucks @ Phoenix Coyotes
9:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Canucks (23-16-0) … Coyotes (24-13-3)
Last Ten: Canucks (7-3-0) … Coyotes (6-2-2)
Away/Home: Canucks (7-10-0) … Coyotes (15-5-0)
Season Series: First meeting

Players to watch:
VAN- Mason Raymond

Raymond is hot right now, but has never tallied a point vs. Phoenix. Will that change tonight??
PHX- Shane Doan
The ‘Yotes will look to Doan tonight, as he has 6 points in the last 5 games.

Projected Goaltenders:
VAN- Roberto Luongo
(09/10 stats: 19-12-0, 2.28 GAA)
PHX- Jason LaBarbera (09/10 stats: 2-3-0, 2.33 GAA)

Injury Report:
VAN-
Pavol Demitra (shoulder, out), Mathieu Schneider (personal, out), Ryan Johnson (foot, questionable), Michael Grabner (ankle, out)
PHX- Daniel Winnik (arm, out), Kurt Sauer (headaches, out)

Game Thoughts:
This shall be a very interesting game down in Phoenix tonight. Doan and company are coming off a tough shootout loss in San Jose last night, while Vancouver had a day of rest after impressive back-to-back wins over rivals. It’s tough to get a feel for this game since they’ve split their 8 matchups in the desert since the lockout. Even if Bryzgalov doesn't start, you can't go against a team that has won 9 straight at home, can you?
Prediction: Coyotes 3, Canucks 2

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Islanders over Blue Jackets
Blackhawks over Stars
Blues over Predators
Ducks over Wild

Jackets/Caps trade; more coming?

Photobucket
We have ourselves a trade! This morning, there were whispers on Twitter about a Columbus-Washington trade going down sometime today. Those whispers turned into crazy rumors, which had people saying that Nikita Filatov and Karl Alzner would be swapped (we know that wouldn't happen!) The trade was actually Jason Chimera to Washington for Milan Jurcina and Chris Clark. Here's what I make of this deal...

Columbus needed defensive help, no question. So they are taking a flyer on Jurcina, hoping he could glue something together. If he doesn't work out, GM Scott Howson may try to make a more drastic acquisition. They also get a locker room leader in Clark, who was the captain in Washington. Maybe bringing him in could help turn things around internally after losing nine in a row. For the Jackets, I think this is a low-risk, medium-reward type deal.

Now, from the Caps' point of view, some people are criticizing GM George McPhee for pulling the trigger on this. The team has 54 points, tops in the East, and just traded away their captain in what seems like an uneven deal. Well, here's how this makes sense for them: Clark's contract ends after next season, with a cap hit of $2.633 million. Now the Caps have a little more wiggle room financially; plus, it's only a matter of time before Ovechkin gets the 'C' on his chest.

Remember... Nicklas Backstrom, Semyon Varlamov, and Alzner will all become RFA's in the next two summers, so they'll need all the cap space they can get. Also, they had an influx of defensemen, so I'm sure McPhee was more than happy to part with Jurcina. They are getting a scrappy veteran in Jason Chimera who can help out on the 3rd or 4th line, and on the penalty kill (like Clark). His deal doesn't expire until the end of the 2011/12 season, but he's younger and cheaper than Clark. Chimera also has a bit more offensive talent.

The only thing I question about this trade is the timing of it on Washington's behalf, since they are looking down on the rest of the Eastern Conference. I'm interested to see how they react tonight against Carolina.

So we're less than 24 hours since the roster freeze has been lifted, and we already have a deal of semi-significance. Does this mean there's more to come?? I wouldn't doubt it. Everybody is approaching the halfway point in the season, and this is when we usually start to see these kind of deals go down. I'd watch these teams closely over the next week or so: Buffalo, Carolina, Edmonton, Nashville, both New Yorks, and Toronto.

Power Rankings #13

Photobucket
1. Chicago Blackhawks (26-9-3), LW: 1
In their one loss this week, the ‘Hawks heavily outplayed San Jose, but couldn’t get the bounces. They impressed everyone with a home-and-home sweep of Nashville.
2. Washington Capitals (24-8-6), LW: 4
The Caps looked like a team to be reckoned with as they took down the Sabres and Devils. Is Michal Neuvirth the new starter in D.C.?
3. New Jersey Devils (26-9-1), LW: 2
Martin Brodeur and company showed their mettle with a dominant win in Pittsburgh. But Zach Parise has to wake up... he'
s still goalless in December.
4. San Jose Sharks (23-8-7), LW: 8
The Sharks are starting to look like that juggernaut we’ve been expecting. They have a flashy showdown with the Caps, sandwiched though by a pair of big tilts vs. Phoenix.
5. Phoenix Coyotes (24-13-2), LW: 7
Speaking of the Desert Dogs… Dave Tippett’s gang has now won 9 in a row at home (franchise record), and is hitting on all cylinders.
6. Pittsburgh Penguins (26-12-1), LW: 3
Pittsburgh falls three spots in a week where they belted Ottawa 8-2?? Well they surrounded that big win with a couple disappointing home losses.
7. Buffalo Sabres (23-11-4), LW: 6
Lindy Ruff’s Sabres had an up-and-down week, but did pick up 5 out of a possible 8 points. They must find a way to get Vanek rolling again.
8. Vancouver Canucks (23-16-0), LW: 12
All is good in VanCity – for now. The ‘Nucks have won 7 of 9, but have a key 3-game road stretch this week. Can they turn around their struggles away from home??
9. Boston Bruins (19-11-7), LW: 13
Tim Thomas is finally looking like the goalie that was between the pipes a season ago. And if he keeps it up, the B’s may find themselves in a fight with Buffalo for the division.
10. Colorado Avalanche (22-12-6), LW: 10
The Avs put together another solid week, despite the 3rd period collapse vs. Anaheim. They have a 4-point lead on the Canucks in the Northwest.
11. Los Angeles Kings (22-13-3), LW: 9
Terry Murray’s club lost their one game this week after a nine-day layoff. By no means did they deserve to drop here, and will look to get back in the groove in the coming days.
12. Montreal Canadiens (19-18-3), LW: 20
I think we all now know just how important Andrei Markov is to this team. They are 5-0 with him in the lineup this year, and the power play has taken off.
13. Nashville Predators (22-14-3), LW: 5
Heading into this weekend, the Preds certainly had high expectations. But they laid an egg against the ‘Hawks, unable to get a point. A crucial week awaits them.
14. Calgary Flames (20-12-5), LW: 11
Calgary has been bad this month, but they are a better team than this. Jarome Iginla has struggled, and the Saddledome isn’t the ‘black hole’ it should be.
15. Ottawa Senators (19-15-4), LW: 14
Cory Clouston and company suffered a big loss when Alfredsson hurt his shoulder this week. They beat Buffalo thereafter, but an offensive slump could follow.
16. Minnesota Wild (19-16-3), LW: 18
How good have the Wild been lately?? Since a disappointing 7-12-2 start, Minnesota is 12-4-1 and sitting just 4 points outside of a playoff spot.
17. Dallas Stars (16-11-11), LW: 16
The inconsistent Stars are 4-4-4 in their last 12 games, and can’t get any sort of rhythm going. You have to think that if this continues, it will damage their playoff hopes.
18. Detroit Red Wings (19-14-5), LW: 17
Even though the Wings are struggling to score goals, Jimmy Howard has taken over as their starter. Also, a less-than-hectic schedule these next couple weeks should help.
19. Atlanta Thrashers (18-15-4), LW: 15
Atlanta has really struggled this month as they have failed to win a game in regulation. Although the offense has been there, Pavelec and Hedberg have let them down in net.
20. Philadelphia Flyers (18-18-2), LW: 25
Have the Flyers turned it around?? Not yet, but signs are pointing towards better days after a 3-game win streak to close out the week.
21. New York Rangers (18-16-4), LW: 24
You can see the wheels starting to turn in the right direction for the Blueshirts, as well. John Tortorella’s epic press conference seems to have woken this team up.
22. St. Louis Blues (17-16-5), LW: 21
The Blues still can’t buy a win at home. They have three games at Scottrade this week, and if they come up empty, Andy Murray could start feeling the heat (if he isn't already).
23. Florida Panthers (16-17-7), LW: 19
The ‘Cats had scored 23 goals in a recent six-game stretch, but the offense has cooled down since.
24. Toronto Maple Leafs (14-17-9), LW: 23
I want to think that Sunday’s win in Pittsburgh is the start of something, but Ron Wilson’s gang has lost 5 of 7 and is too inconsistent.
25. Tampa Bay Lightning (14-15-9), LW: 29
After losing 8 of 9 to start December, the Bolts have won 3 of 4. Are the tides turning in Tampa??
26. Anaheim Ducks (15-16-7), LW: 22
Anaheim has had back-to-back shoddy performances, and needs to pick up wins this week against conference foes.
27. New York Islanders (15-18-7), LW: 27
The Isles’ offense simply isn’t cutting it as they have scored 3 goals or less in all but one game this month.
28. Edmonton Oilers (15-19-4), LW: 26
Edmonton is reeling right now, and find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference. They’ve lost 6 straight – all in regulation – and have tough games coming up this week.
29. Carolina Hurricanes (9-22-7), LW: 28
Even the returns of Staal and Ward haven’t been able to turn this team around. I have a feeling a trade or two will occur within the next month.
30. Columbus Blue Jackets (14-18-7), LW: 30
The Jackets have now gone 9 games without a win, and I’m starting to wonder if something is wrong internally. If so, Ken Hitchcock could be shown the door.

The Week Ahead

Top 5 games I’m looking forward to:
1. Capitals @ Sharks (Wednesday)
2. Flyers @ Bruins – Winter Classic (Friday)
3. Penguins @ Devils (Wednesday)
4. Sharks @ Coyotes (Thursday)
5. Capitals @ Kings (Saturday)

Matchup of the Weak:
Blue Jackets @ Islanders
(Tuesday)… YUCK!

Two teams to watch:
1. Montreal Canadiens

Which Montreal team will we see… the Habs or the Hab-nots?? They’ve won four in a row, and the man advantage is hitting on all cylinders. They have a big game tonight in Ottawa, a quick 2-game swing in Florida, and a home date with Buffalo on Sunday. This could be a make or break week for Jacques Martin’s club.
2. Vancouver Canucks
After winning 7 of the last 9 (8 at home), how will the Canucks handle the last 3 games of a 4-game road trip?? They slaughtered Calgary last night, but must travel to Phoenix, St. Louis, and Dallas this week. It’s important for them to keep up their success, and to keep climbing the standings in the West.

Predictions record: 5-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Patrick Kane, CHI
(2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Kane’s game-winner and 3 points lifted the ‘Hawks in a wild 3rd period.
2. Mason Raymond, VAN (3 Goals)
It’s safe to say Raymond got lucky on his 2nd goal, but he did earn his hat trick.
3. Tim Connolly, BUF (2 Goals, 1 Assist)
Connolly busted out of a slump with 3 points, including 2 goals in the 3rd.
Honorable Mention: M. Grier, J. Carter, T. Thomas, J. Madden, I. White
Dud of the Night:
St. Louis’ home woes
… You would think coming home after a successful road trip could spark something. But the Blues lost again on home-ice, this time 5-3 to the Sabres. They held a 3-2 lead going into the 3rd, but laid an egg in the final frame. St. Louis is now 6-12-2 at home, and left the ice to a chorus of boos last night.
Honorable Mention: Kiprusoff’s ‘Charmin-soft’ goal vs. Raymond

Season Series: Tied 1-1

Players to watch:
MTL- Andrei Markov

The Habs are 5-0 with him in the lineup, and he hasn’t missed a beat.
OTT- Mike Fisher
With three key forwards shelved, Fisher has to keep up his 1st half success.

Projected Goaltenders:
MTL- Jaroslav Halak
(09/10 stats: 10-5-0, 2.53 GAA)
OTT- Pascal Leclaire (09/10 stats: 9-6-1, 2.91 GAA)

Injury Report:
MTL-
Brian Gionta (foot, probable), Roman Hamrlik (knee, probable), Paul Mara (hand, out)
OTT- Daniel Alfredsson (shoulder, out), Jason Spezza and Nick Foligno (knee, out)

Game Thoughts:
Montreal is coming into Ottawa red-hot, having won four straight thanks to Halak and the power play. The Habs’ man advantage has gone 9/15 during this win streak, while the Sens have given up 4 power play goals in the last two games. Cory Clouston’s club pulled out a win in Buffalo, but may be too short-handed up front to slow them down right now.

The young D-man has come up big, and is on pace for a career year.
SJ- Patrick Marleau
In this recent 4-game win streak, Marleau has 5 goals and 7 points.

Projected Goaltenders:
PHX- Ilya Bryzgalov
(09/10 stats: 22-10-2, 2.02 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
This has suddenly become a marquee matchup, and will face-off again in Phoenix later this week. The ‘Yotes have won 4 of 5, and 9 in a row at home. But they are on the road tonight, facing a tough task in taking down the Sharks for a third time this year. San Jose is starting to turn it on, and is looking forward to this opportunity to finally solve Dave Tippett’s crew.
Prediction: Sharks 3, Coyotes 1

The strangest goal of the year!

Mason Raymond was just flipping the puck deep... and it somehow eluded Miikka Kiprusoff, and went into the net. The look on Sutter's face is classic!

Around the NHL

‘Hawks prove to be a very dangerous foe
Hockey fans in Chicago are forced to keep reminding themselves it’s only December 27th, because their Blackhawks are looking like one of the best – if not the best – team in the NHL. Joel Quenneville’s club is beginning to take the shape of a more-than-legit Cup contender. They are dynamite in every phase of the game, including goaltending… which was the biggest question mark heading into the season.

Nashville is a tough team to play against, especially at home. They usually give a full 60-minute effort at 110%. That was not the case last night, but I don’t know if it would’ve mattered. The ‘Hawks were too fast and too strong for the Predators handle in a 4-1 victory. Chicago now has a 6-point lead in the division, and complete their key home-and-home with Nashville tonight at home.

I’ve watched them closely this month, and was in attendance for their dominance over Nashville last night. And every time I’ve seen them, I come away more and more impressed. They have a killer combination of speed, skill, tenacity, and poise. Their top three lines can be matched with any other team’s top nine, the blue-line is deep and versatile, and the goaltending is stepping up in the clutch.

Quenneville and company are hitting their stride without the offense performing to its full potential; and by that, I mean scoring 4 or 5 a night during a dominant stretch. But with Huet and Niemi playing so well between the pipes, they don’t need to score that many goals. Assuming they stay healthy, this team truly has the ingredients to make a deep run this spring.

Should Montreal take Halak off the block?
Two weeks ago, GM Bob Gainey was dangling disgruntled net-minder Jaroslav Halak out on the trade market. Philadelphia, specifically, was reportedly interested. Halak and his agent have experessed their discontent publicly with his playing time since the beginning of the season. He and Carey Price were seemingly splitting time, but Price was still getting the bulk of the starts.

With Montreal winning four straight, though, should Gainey put off any plans of dealing Halak?? The answer is simple: yes! Halak has been unbelievable during this recent win streak, compiling this stat line: 4-0, 1.48 GAA, .967 SV%. He has obviously unseated Price of his starter’s role at least for now. Montreal has climbed into 7th position in the Eastern Conference, with Halak and the power play on a roll.

What does Semin’s extension mean?
The second half of Washington’s Russian attack received a nice one-year extension yesterday, worth $6 million. Alex Semin has definitely earned his new deal, even though the price tag may be a tad too high. Previously set to become a restricted free agent this summer, Caps fans are guaranteed to see Semin and his countryman Ovechkin do their thing in D.C. at least another season (through 2010/11).

But will they see #28 in red after that? What I took away from this news is that Semin’s long-term future may not be with the Capitals. They’ll have others to worry about, too, before the summer of 2011 – including Backstrom and Varlamov. If GM George McPhee opts to extend Semin long-term, the team may not have enough cap space to secure all of their young stars. This will be something to watch a bit closer when the time comes…

Canucks 4, Oilers 1
Sharks 5, Ducks 2
Predictions record: 8-2-3

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Jaroslav Halak, MTL
(47 Saves, 2 GA)
For the fourth straight game, Halak faced 40-plus shots. But he once again stepped up, and delivered a big 47-save effort in Toronto.
2. Kyle Okposo, NYI (1 Goal, 2 Assists)
Okposo had two critical helpers for the Isles, and also scored the OT winner to beat the Rangers.
3. Todd Bertuzzi, DET (2 Goals)
Bertuzzi came up big for the goal-starved Wings, scoring both of their goals vs. the Jackets.
Honorable Mention: D. Sedin, P. Marleau, P. Budaj, J. Thornton, N. Backstrom, A. Ovechkin, G. Latendresse, V. Lecavalier, J. Jokinen
Dud of the Night:
Predators’ 3rd jerseys
… Nashville continued their porous play in the slick, new third jerseys. They were flat out dominated, but also didn’t bring a full team effort. With the loss, the Preds are now 1-4-1 in the new jerseys, while playing lights-out in the regular home threads. The ‘Black and Blue’ thirds are having an opposite effect from the old mustards.

F- M. Gaborik (-2)
F- P. Marleau (2 G, 2 PIM)

Game Thoughts:
The Preds and ‘Hawks complete their home-and-home tonight at the United Center. With the 4-1 win last night in Nashville, the ‘Hawks hold a 6-point lead atop the Central Division. Barry Trotz and company must rebound and have a 110% effort from everyone, and it still may not be enough. The hard-working Preds could get a point, but the ‘Hawks are just hitting on all cylinders right now.

Jay-Bo has a -7 rating over the last 6 games; he must improve that number.

Projected Goaltenders:
VAN- Roberto Luongo
(Last night vs. EDM: 24 Saves, 1 GA)
CGY- Miikka Kiprusoff (09/10 stats: 18-9-5, 2.16 GAA)

Injury Report:
VAN-
Pavol Demitra (shoulder, out), Mathieu Schneider (personal, out), Ryan Johnson (foot, doubtful), Michael Grabner (ankle, out)
CGY- Cory Sarich (undisclosed, out), Adam Pardy (wrist, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
Vancouver went 6-2 on their lengthy home-stand, regaining some much-needed momentum. Now they head back out on the road, with a date with rival Calgary tonight. The Canucks have struggled on the road this season, but Brent Sutter’s club has been playing some poor hockey of late. Since the Flames have won the first two of the season series, I think Luongo and company are determined to get these guys.
Prediction: Canucks 2, Flames 1

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Flyers over Islanders
Bruins over Panthers
Sabrs over Blues
Penguins over Maple Leafs

Records:
Overall:
Devils (26-8-1) … Capitals (23-8-6)
Last Ten: Devils (9-1-0) … Capitals (7-3-0)
Away/Home: Devils (13-2-1) … Capitals (11-2-3)
Season Series: 3-0 Devils

Players to watch:
NJ- Patrik Elias

He is still hotter than a pistol, tallying a point in 8 straight games.
WSH- Alex Ovechkin
Ovie has 14 points in December already.

Projected Goaltenders:
NJ- Martin Brodeur
(09/10 stats: 23-8-1, 2.10 GAA)
WSH- Michal Neuvirth (09/10 stats: 2-2-0, 3.27 GAA)

Injury Report:
NJ-
David Clarkson (leg, out), Paul Martin (arm, out), Dainius Zubrus (knee, out)
WSH- Semyon Varlamov (groin, out), Brian Pothier (ribs, out), Boyd Gordon (back, out)

Game Thoughts:
New Jersey has flat-out owned the Caps this season, taking the first three games of the season series. But you know Ovechkin & company will be determined to change that, and avoid being swept by Lemaire’s Devils. My head says New Jersey… my guts says Washington.
Prediction: Capitals 3, Devils 2 (SO)
---
Chicago Blackhawks @ Nashville Predators
8:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Blackhawks (24-9-3) … Predators (22-12-3)
Last Ten: Blackhawks (7-3-0) … Predators (7-2-1)
Away/Home: Blackhawks (8-5-2) … Predators (12-6-1)
Season Series: Tied 2-2

Players to watch:
CHI- Jonathan Toews

Captain Toews has been pretty consistent lately, and normally gives Nashville fits.
NSH- David Legwand
‘Leggy’ usually saves his best for Chicago, and needs to play well in all areas.

Projected Goaltenders:
CHI- Cristobal Huet
(09/10 stats: 16-8-2, 2.16 GAA)
NSH- Pekka Rinne (09/10 stats: 14-6-2, 2.75 GAA)

Injury Report:
CHI-
Cam Barker (lower body, questionable), Ben Eager (upper body, questionable), Dave Bolland (back, out), Adam Burish (knee, out)
NSH- Jerred Smithson (hand, out), Jordin Tootoo (foot, out)

Game Thoughts:
The ‘Hawks and Preds will open up a key back-to-back slate tonight in the Music City. Chicago currently holds a 4-point lead in the division. These will be the last two games between the two this season – good planning by the NHL! Nashville has taken the previous two matchups. I think the Preds will return home from a successful western swing and get the ‘W’.
Prediction: Predators 3, Blackhawks 2
---

The rest of tonight’s action:
New York Islanders (14-17-7) @ New York Rangers (18-16-3)

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
NYI- John Tavares
NYR- Chris Drury

Projected Goaltenders:
NYI- Dwayne Roloson (09/10 stats: 12-7-5, 2.87 GAA)
NYR- Henrik Lundqvist (09/10 stats: 16-13-3, 2.41 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
The Isles/Rangers rivalry resumes, with both teams getting a win in their home-and-home last week. Tonight, I believe the Rangers will continue their newly found winning ways.
Prediction: Rangers 4, Islanders 1
---
Philadelphia Flyers (16-18-2) @ Carolina Hurricanes (9-22-6)
7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
PHI- Mike Richards
CAR- Jussi Jokinen

Projected Goaltenders:
PHI- Michael Leighton (09/10 stats: 2-4-0, 3.88 GAA)
CAR- Cam Ward (09/10 stats: 7-2-5, 2.86 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
With Boucher probably getting another night off with a lacerated finger, the ‘Canes could make it rough on their ex-teammate Leighton.
Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Flyers 2
---
Montreal Canadiens (18-18-3) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (13-17-8)
7:00 ET… TV: CBC

Players to watch:
MTL- Tomas Plekanec
TOR- Phil Kessel

Projected Goaltenders:
MTL- Jaroslav Halak (09/10 stats: 9-5-0, 2.57 GAA)
TOR- Jonas Gustavsson (09/10 stats: 7-6-6, 2.85 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
One reason why the Habs should win: their power play is easily the hottest in the league (almost automatic), and Toronto has the worst penalty kill.
Prediction: Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 1
---
Ottawa Senators (18-15-4) @ Buffalo Sabres (22-11-3)
7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
OTT- Milan Michalek
BUF- Derek Roy

Projected Goaltenders:
OTT- Pascal Leclaire (09/10 stats: 8-6-1, 2.98 GAA)
BUF- Ryan Miller (09/10 stats: 21-8-2, 1.99 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Already without Spezza, the Sens became even more shorthanded with Alfredsson’s shoulder injury. I really like Buffalo in this one...
Prediction: Sabres 4, Senators 1
---
Columbus Blue Jackets (14-17-7) @ Detroit Red Wings (18-14-5)
7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
CBJ- Rick Nash
DET- Pavel Datsyuk

Projected Goaltenders:
CBJ- Mathieu Garon (09/10 stats: 4-4-2, 2.96 GAA)
DET- Jimmy Howard (09/10 stats: 11-8-1, 2.39 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
These are two struggling teams in the West, but Columbus has been terrible lately. They are playing with no confidence or passion. Detroit gets back on track tonight…
Prediction: Red Wings 4, Blue Jackets 2
---
Atlanta Thrashers (18-14-4) @ Tampa Bay Lightning (13-15-9)
7:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
ATL- Maxim Afinogenov
TB- Ryan Malone

Projected Goaltenders:
ATL- Ondrej Pavelec (09/10 stats: 9-9-3, 3.39 GAA)
TB- Mike Smith (09/10 stats: 6-10-5, 3.12 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
This is a tough game to get a finger on, and is a virtual toss-up. In the end, I think the Thrashers will prevail in overtime/shootout.
Prediction: Thrashers 4, Lightning 3 (OT)
---
St. Louis Blues (17-14-5) @ Minnesota Wild (18-16-3)
8:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
STL- David Backes
MIN- Andrew Brunette

Projected Goaltenders:
STL- Chris Mason (09/10 stats: 11-10-4, 2.48 GAA)
MIN- Niklas Backstrom (09/10 stats: 16-12-3, 2.45 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
St. Louis and Minnesota have made recent charges to move up the Western Conference standings. It should be a good low-scoring affair, with the Wild edging it out.
Prediction: Wild 3, Blues 2 (SO)
---
Dallas Stars (16-10-11) @ Colorado Avalanche (21-12-6)
9:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
DAL- Brad Richards
COL- Paul Stastny

Projected Goaltenders:
DAL- Alex Auld (09/10 stats: 5-2-3, 2.97 GAA)
COL- Peter Budaj (09/10 stats: 3-3-1, 2.41 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Dallas visits Colorado for the first time this year. I think the Stars have a real good shot, but the pesky Avs put another one in the win column.
Prediction: Avalanche 4, Stars 2
---
Los Angeles Kings (22-12-3) @ Phoenix Coyotes (23-13-2)
9:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
LA- Ryan Smyth
PHX- Shane Doan

Projected Goaltenders:
LA- Jonathan Quick (09/10 stats: 20-11-3, 2.58 GAA)
PHX- Ilya Bryzgalov (09/10 stats: 21-10-2, 2.02 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
The Kings and Coyotes reunite once again, with the Kings taking 3 of the first 4 meetings. I think Phoenix has the upper-hand tonight since Bryzgalov is so good at home.
Prediction: Coyotes 3, Kings 2
---
Edmonton Oilers (15-18-4) @ Vancouver Canucks (21-16-0)
10:00 ET… TV: CBC

Players to watch:
EDM- Dustin Penner
VAN- The Sedins

Projected Goaltenders:
EDM- Jeff Deslauriers (09/10 stats: 8-8-2, 2.88 GAA)
VAN- Roberto Luongo (09/10 stats: 17-12-0, 2.37 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
The last time Edmonton visited GM Place, they were smoked in a hurry. They’ll have revenge on their minds, but Vancouver will finish their long homestand with another victory.
Prediction: Canucks 4, Oilers 2
---
Anaheim Ducks (15-15-7) @ San Jose Sharks (22-8-7)
10:30 ET… TV: Local Networks

Players to watch:
ANA- Bobby Ryan
SJ- Patrick Marleau

Projected Goaltenders:
ANA- Jonas Hiller (09/10 stats: 11-10-2, 2.89 GAA)
SJ- Evgeni Nabokov (09/10 stats: 19-5-7, 2.33 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Anaheim has given San Jose everything they can handle this year, but have come up short each time. I don’t see it being any different tonight in the Shark Tank.
Prediction: Sharks 3, Ducks 1

Morning Skate: December 24

It's Christmas Eve!!

Photobucket
The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Bruins 6, Thrashers 4
Islanders 3, Maple Leafs 1
Rangers 4, Panthers 1
Capitals 5, Sabres 2
Canadiens 5, Hurricanes 1
Wild 3, Oilers 1
Penguins 8, Senators 2
Flyers 5, Lightning 2
Blackhawks 3, Red Wings 0
Stars 3, Blue Jackets 1
Coyotes 4, Ducks 0
Blues 2, Flames 1 (SO)
Predictions record: 7-4-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Marc-Andre Fleury, PIT
(45 Saves, 2 GA)
Fleury’s 23-save performance in the 1st period alone was good enough to get the 1st star… just spectacular!
2. Evgeni Malkin, PIT (3 Goals)
It’s difficult to give two of three stars to Penguins, but Geno’s hat trick set the tone for their onslaught on Ottawa.
3. Antti Niemi, CHI (33 Saves, Shutout)
The ‘Hawks shutout the Wings for the 2nd straight time, and this time Niemi shut the door.

Honorable Mention: N. Backstrom (both), I. Bryzgalov, M. Savard, B. Guerin, B. Betts, H. Lundqvist, V. Prospal, J. Halak, A. Auld, T. Plekanec
Dud of the Night:
Ottawa Senators
… The Sens continued their road woes with a pitiful performance – after period one. Once Captain Daniel Alfredsson left due to injury, it was downhill from there. They gave up 5 goals in the 2nd, and 3 power play goals overall to the 28th best man advantage in the league.

Note: There will be no ‘Thursday Links’ until after the New Year…
