From today up to July 1, NHL teams can buyout players from their contracts, and open up cap space. It’s not that simple though… here’s a breakdown of how the buyout system works. I went through and picked out some players who could be bought out over the next two weeks.
Todd White, ATL (1 year remaining, $2.375 million)
Michael Ryder, BOS (1 year remaining, $4.0 million)
Steve Staios, CGY (1 year remaining, $2.7 million)
Ales Kotalik, CGY (2 years remaining, $3.0 million/per)
Sergei Samsonov, CAR (1 year remaining, $2.533 million)
Brent Sopel, CHI (1 year remaining, $2.333 million)
Cristobal Huet, CHI (2 years remaining, $5.625 million/per)
Ethan Moreau, EDM (1 year remaining, $2.0 million)
Patrick O’Sullivan, EDM (1 year remaining, $2.925 million)
Robert Nilsson, EDM (1 year remaining, $2.0 million)
Erik Ersberg, LA (1 year remaining, $750,000)
Georges Laraque, MTL (1 year remaining, $1.5 million)
Wade Redden, NYR (4 years rema… never mind, wishful thinking!)
Jonathan Cheechoo, OTT (1 year remaining, $3.0 million)
Todd Fedoruk, TB (1 year remaining, $1.508 million)
Jeff Finger, TOR (2 years remaining, $3.5 million/per)
Darcy Hordichuk, VAN (1 year remaining, $775,000)
John Erskine, WSH (1 year remaining, $1.25 million)

Why do you think Ersberg will be bought out and not traded?
I wouldn't rule out a trade with him... but I also wouldn't rule out a buyout. That's why he's on the list.
