The Minnesota Wild announced today that they re-signed team captain Mikko Koivu to a 7-year contract extension worth $47.25 million.
Over the past few seasons, Koivu has been one of the most consistent Wild players, which head coach Todd Richards and and GM Chuck Fletcher acknowledged last October by naming Koivu the club's first permanent team captain. Last season, Koivu put up 71 points (22 goals and 49 assists) in leading his team in scoring while also playing in all but two games.
This signing was more than just about point totals. Really, this signing was about Koivu's commitment to the team and the leadership he provides on a daily basis.
Hopefully for the Wild, Koivu's leadership leads the team back into the playoffs in the near future.
