Leafs in the Playoffs: Good for Hockey

I know that when it comes to Canada, hockey is everything.

People north of the border live and die with the sport and their favorite team. Obviously, this is also appropriate for those who love the Toronto Maple Leafs.

When talking about Canada, there is always the debate: who is Canada's team? One could either go with the Montreal Canadiens; or Leafs and since one team has had more success than the other in recent years, let's keep this post on the Leafs.

For a number of reasons, it would be great for the league if the Leafs could somehow find a way to make it into the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season:

1) It's always Exciting: When the Leafs are in the playoffs, the hockey always seems to be great. There are plenty of rivalries, overtime games, hard hitting and great goaltending. These are the characteristics that made the Leafs one of the tougher teams to play against from 1998-1999 season to the 2003-04 season.

2) The Fans: As I mentioned above, Leaf fans live and die by their team. They are one of the most passionate and knowledgeable hockey fan bases in the league and deserve to see their money well spent by having a successful product on the ice. GM Brian Burke is doing everything he can to make that happen.

3) The League: When the Leafs are in the playoffs, the NHL and the organization reap the benefits. We're talking about television ratings, ticket prices, merchandise, media coverage, etc. All good things when it comes to the sport and one of its original six franchises.

These are some of the reasons to consider why it would be good to have them make the playoffs in 2010-11 and beyond.  After yesterday, this team is 2-0 and playing with a lot of confidence and pride.  Could a hot start trigger a surprise season in Toronto?
