Here is the first look of the 2010/11 season at the standings if there was a different points system. The most popular solution is to dish out three points per game (and the one I’m in favor of the most). A regulation win would be worth three points apiece, whereas an overtime/shootout victory will get you just two. The loser in extra time would still get a single point.
The tiebreaker at the end of the year would be total wins, followed by regulation wins. I’m a big fan of this system (which was used at this year’s Olympics), and did some ‘research’ as to what the standings would look like if this was indeed how we handed out the points.
So far, there isn’t much change to the current standings. However, our end-of-year results last season saw some playoff teams fall out of the top eight in their respective conferences.

I know the record books would be shattered if the NHL went to this system, but it’s for the better in my opinion. This eliminates all of the extra point crap (when a game goes to OT), and rewards teams for getting the job done in 60 minutes. It would also create more excitement for the final two minutes of regulation in a tied game…
*I'll update these standings at the end of every month.
Did Doug Wilson get the distraction he wanted?

Good stuff, Ryan. I've been shouting for the "three-point must" system from the biggest soapbox that I can find, ever since they started giving extra points for losing but not for winning.
Don't worry about the record book being shattered: it already has been, courtesy the NHL "brain trust". Goalie wins, coaching wins, team wins, ".500" records, "100-point seasons, none of them mean anything like what they used to mean. Shootout results feature game-winning goalies but not game-winning goals. The standings don't add up, and neither do the stats.
The system has been thrown way out of balance, and the boys in charge seem to have no interest in fixing things. Artificial parity is much more important than competitive integrity. It's disgraceful.
