Welcome Back, Carey Price

When the Montreal Canadiens drafted Carey Price in 2005, many Canadiens fans and pundits thought they were getting the next Patrick Roy or Ken Dryden.

After his great rookie season in 2007-08 however, things fell apart for Price. He began to allow soft goals, looked out of position, developed poor work habits, was effected by the heavy amount of pressure and ultimately, lost his job to now St. Louis Blues netminder Jaroslav Halak.

This season, however, the Price has been right for Montreal and Carey is proving to the organization and its fans that he is everything they wanted in a professional goaltender.

As the undisputed No. 1 goaltender this season, Price is 11-5-1 with a 2.05 goals against average, a .930 save percentage and three shutouts. Not bad for someone who was almost run out of town in the pre-season, eh?

After a particularly bad pre-season performance against the Ottawa Senators, Price told members of the Montreal media to "relax" and "chill out". It turns out that Price was absolutely right and now provides his hockey club with steady goaltending between the pipes.

His steady play in net could especially be seen last night in his 3-0 shutout win over the high-octane Philadelphia Flyers. The 23-year-old goaltender made 41 saves and controlled his rebounds, was in position for second and third shots and was cool and calm under pressure. He even had the Bell Centre crowd on its feet after making a few great saves.

It may still be early in the season but right now, Price is becoming the goaltender that the Habs' hoped they were getting when they drafted him. For Price, it must feel good to be back on top of his game.
