Every other Friday, we’ll bring you an updated look at the candidates for the major awards around the league…
Stats: 26 GP, 21 G, 19 A, 40 Pts, +5
The Tampa Bay prodigy is still having an unbelievable year, but did everyone start the ‘50 in 50’ talk too soon?
3. Pavel Datsyuk
Stats: 22 GP, 8 G, 19 A, 27 Pts, +7
The magician-like Datsyuk is officially back. Everyone had a down year a season ago in Detroit, but Datsyuk is one that has comeback with a vengeance. His performance in San Jose the other night was masterful – a wizardry pass to Zetterberg and a crafty goal himself. After last year, Detroit has to appreciate what they see from Datsyuk that much more.
Other candidates: Tim Thomas, Alexander Semin, Brad Richards
2. Carey Price
Stats: 24 GP, 15-7-2, 2.00 GAA, .934 SV%, 4 SO
Stats: 19 GP, 10-7-2, 2.40 GAA, .910 SV%, 3 SO
Other candidates: Jimmy Howard, Jonathan Quick, Sergei Bobrovsky
2. Sergei Bobrovsky
Stats: 19 GP, 12-4-2, 2.18 GAA, .926 SV%
Is Bobrovsky finally the answer in net for Philadelphia? He has certainly looked the part in the first two months.
3. Logan Couture
Stats: 24 GP, 10 G, 5 A, 15 Pts, +2
The 21-year-old Guelph native broke into the league late last year and played 25 games, but is still Calder-eligible. Couture’s 10 goals leads all rookies and he’s been a great addition to the Sharks’ second line this season. Three of his 10 tallies are game-winners. He scored two nice goals last night in Ottawa.
Other candidates: Kevin Shattenkirk, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall
2. Dustin Byfuglien
Stats: 26 GP, 10 G, 17 A, 27 Pts, +4
Another great story in the NHL this year is Byfuglien’s emergence on the blueline. I don’t anyone expected this kind of production – if so, not this quickly. He has lit up the scoreboard on a regular basis, leading the Thrashers to playoff contention. Will he face the same criticism as Mike Green has in the Norris debate, though?
3. Kris Letang
Stats: 27 GP, 5 G, 19 A, 24 Pts, +13
Letang is making Pens fans forget about Sergei Gonchar by putting up Gonchar-like numbers on the back end.
Other candidates: Duncan Keith, John-Michael Liles, Zdeno Chara
3. Guy Boucher
Record: 14-9-3, 31 points, 5th Eastern Conference
Rookie coach Boucher has been a great fit in Tampa Bay thus far.
Other candidates: Joe Sacco, Bruce Boudreau, Marc Crawford
