What if we had a different points system?

Here is the first look of the 2010/11 season at the standings if there was a different points system. The most popular solution is to dish out three points per game (and the one I’m in favor of the most). A regulation win would be worth three points apiece, whereas an overtime/shootout victory will get you just two. The loser in extra time would still get a single point.

The tiebreaker at the end of the year would be total wins, followed by regulation wins. I’m a big fan of this system (which was used at this year’s Olympics), and did some ‘research’ as to what the standings would look like if this was indeed how we handed out the points.

So far, there isn’t much change to the current standings. However, our end-of-year results last season saw some playoff teams fall out of the top eight in their respective conferences.

It was a crazy game in Philadelphia last night, especially when the Flyers put it away early. Here's what transpired...

You can bet Danny Briere will get suspended for his high-stick across Frans Nielsen's face there in the last video. How many games, exactly? I'll let you be the judge.

Video: Cory Sarich's own-goal

It has to be the most embarrassing thing for a defenseman: scoring on your own net. Cory Sarich did just that tonight against the Capitals, in the midst of Calgary's second period self-destruction. Poor Kipper.

Saturday Faceoff: Coach’s Challenges?

Photobucket
After Colton Orr’s controversial game-winning goal against the Panthers this week, one hot topic has been the possibility of coach’s challenges. Panthers GM Dale Tallon is planning on proposing this at the next GM meetings, and 14 of 21 surveyed coaches would like to see this new addition. Do we?

Yes, bring on challenges
By Patrick Hoffman

I may not the biggest football/NFL fan, but one thing I do love about the game is when a head coach challenges a play.

When the coach challenges a close play, it is fun, it is exciting, it is risky and can be extremely rewarding, especially if the official reverses the call in your favor.

While it's tough to figure out, I think that something like this would be great for the NHL. There are so many times when it's just the players arguing whether they scored or if there was a controversial non-penalty call; so wouldn't it be interesting if the coach could challenge the referee's call on the ice whether the puck was in, was not in, whistled dead, etc.?

Projected Goaltenders:

DET- Jimmy Howard (back, out), Brian Rafalski (knee, out), Jonathan Ericsson (back, out), Kris Draper (groin, out)

Game Thoughts:
The Preds and Wings renew acquaintances tonight as both look to build off a fast start. Nashville has been the talk of the NHL, but was humbled Thursday against the Blues. Detroit has lost Howard to back spasms, so Osgood will get the call again. Even though the Preds usually play well against Detroit and are unbeaten on the road, I think Mike Babcock and company will grab the two points.

Taking the Next Step?

Photobucket
Here are some players that have really taken the next step this season through 8-10 games…

- Steven Stamkos, 18 points in 9 games
Stamkos is on pace for 164 points. In all seriousness, I think it’s time to consider him as one of the best players in the game. Is he up there with Crosby, Ovechkin, and Malkin? He will be soon enough.
- Chris Stewart, 14 points in 10 games
A seven-game point streak (including last night’s hat trick) has lifted Stewart to second in the league in points. The power winger for Colorado impressed with 64 points last year, but will easily exceed that total at this current rate.
- Patrick Sharp, 9 goals (12 pts) in 10 games
Sharp is certainly one Blackhawk that has benefitted from the summer cap purge. He has scored nine goals (and three game-winners) thus far. Could he eclipse his previous career high of 36 goals in a season?

3. Tim Thomas, BOS (20 Saves, Shutout)
Close but no cigar: I. Bryzgalov, PHX; N. Backstrom, MIN; M. Fisher, OTT; W. Simmonds, LA; K. Wilson, CBJ

Quick-hit Observations:
- Tim Thomas is 5-0 with a 0.60 goals-against average and two shutouts. Safe to say he’s the early leader for the Vezina?? He has been better than his Vezina-winning 2008-09 campaign.
- Ottawa has bounced back from a tough start by scoring 10 goals in their last two wins. Daniel Alfredsson has 11 points in the last 7 games. Can they keep it up?
- If Halak and the Blues keep up their current play, they will win the Central Division. Mark my words.
- Dallas has started to fade back to reality with three straight losses (all on home-ice). To take a page out of ex-football coach Dennis Green: They are who we thought they were!
- After seeing Henrik Karlsson last night, Miikka Kiprusoff will have to play an excess of 70 games once again.

Niederreiter Heading Back to Portland

Photobucket
Last night marked the ninth game of the season for the Islanders, which meant they had to make a decision on rookie Nino Niederreiter, the fifth overall selection in this past June’s draft. Would they keep him along for the ride, or save a year on his entry-level deal and let him continue to develop in the WHL? The Isles chose the latter.

I think this is the right decision by GM Garth Snow and the brass. Niederreiter, 18, was getting third-line minutes (13:35 average) and only had two points in his nine-game ‘tryout’.

Niederreiter now gets to go back to the WHL and work on becoming a ‘more dominant’ player, as Chris Botta points out. ‘El Nino’ and Blue Jackets prospect Ryan Johansen had a lot of chemistry last season with the Winterhawks, but there is still room for improvement. In 65 games last year, Niederreiter recorded 36 goals and 60 points – which isn’t flattering on the junior level.

With such a young team already and injured forwards on the mend (i.e. Kyle Okposo and Rob Schremp), why not send him back to Portland to develop his game?

Despite the early-season success on Long Island, the Isles aren’t necessarily in a ‘win-now’ state of mind. They have time to develop their prospects the right way, and this further shows that they are starting to make some good decisions. Plus from a business stand-point, the organization saves some money as well as an extra year on his entry-level contract.

We’re going to see a lot more from ‘El Nino’ in the future... he is a special talent. He got a taste of what the NHL is like, and can now work on the little things to make him a better all-around player for when next year’s training camp on Long Island rolls around.

As for the other five draft picks from the 2010 draft currently in the NHL, they are all expected to stick with their respective clubs for the rest of this season.

Habs Hitting Their Stride

Photobucket
Here is a bold prediction that I made back on September 13: “Montreal will be the fourth straight eight seed that got past the first round to fail to make the playoffs the following season.”

Now, I’m not going to back away from that statement until I see more of this team; it has just been nine games. However, if these nine games are a small sample of what’s to come this season in Montreal, all the doubters (including yours truly) will be proven wrong.

Jacques Martin’s crew is 6-2-1 and leading the Northeast Division. They have gotten timely goal-scoring and goaltending as they’ve won five of their last six.

The reason why I was dead-set on believing the Canadiens would fall short of the postseason was Carey Price. How was he going to deal with the pressure of being the number one? Will he turn into the goaltender we all expect him to be? Can he carry the burden without a 1B-type backup?

It seemed like too many questions to be answered – just with Price alone. I also felt a hangover from their Cinderella run was possible as they seemingly overachieved in the postseason.

Price has been a bright spot so far, though. He has been clutch in key situations, and the three losses should not be pinned on him. What’s also impressive is that he has started all nine games for Montreal (which could change this weekend).

While I still think he can still improve his game, the biggest thing going for him is that those boos from the pre-season have disappeared.

Another standout in this hot streak has been Andrei Kostitsyn. He has been a bit of an enigma since his breakout campaign in 2007/08. Consistency was a struggle for him, but it’s been anything but thus far. Maybe getting separated from his brother Sergei was the right solution?

Kostitsyn leads the Habs with 10 points, including five goals in the last five games. Tomas Plekanec has been a great playmaker alongside Kostitsyn; those two have shown great chemistry here in October. Plekanec has been stellar all around, being the catalyst of the offense through nine games. If Michael Cammalleri – the other contributor on that top line – can find his scoring touch, look out!

A couple unsung heroes for the Canadiens thus far are Jeff Halpern and P.K. Subban. Halpern has won nearly 60-percent of his faceoffs, while chipping in with five points. Remember, he was a late bargain signing by GM Pierre Gauthier (Sept. 7).

Subban, a rookie, is logging over 22 minutes of ice-time – second on the team. His calm presence on the back end is almost unheard of for his age (21). If the season ended today, he would get my Calder Trophy vote.

Not to mention, defenseman Andrei Markov is almost set to return to the lineup, which will be a big shot in the arm for the Habs on the blueline. Markov suffered a torn ACL in last spring’s playoffs against Pittsburgh and is just now getting back to full strength.

Markov should provide a lift to the power play, too. The man advantage, quarterbacked by Markov, is usually something that the Canadiens feed off of. Last year they ranked second in the league; three years ago they were first.

Without the services of Markov, though, Montreal has suffered on the power play, striking at a putrid 6.1-percent rate (last in the NHL). Can you imagine how good this club could be if the power play returns to its usual success?

For the Habs to ultimately keep this success going, Price will have to stay consistent, the offense can’t slow down, and the power play needs to improve. If those things happen, they’ll be on their way to proving us doubters wrong.

Wednesday GOW Recap:
Lightning 5, Penguins 3
I thought this game lived up to its billing. Both teams came out flying as Pittsburgh held a 2-1 lead not even four minutes in. Tampa Bay clawed its way back after going down 3-1 and switching goaltenders. Martin St. Louis’ breakaway goal early in the third put the Lightning on top for good, 4-3; he tacked on an empty-netter to win 5-3. The Bolts seemed to have made a statement to the league last night they are for real and will not be going away anytime soon.

Yesterday’s scores:

Capitals 3, Hurricanes 0
Canadiens 5, Islanders 3
Lightning 5, Penguins 3
Blackhawks 3, Kings 1
Sharks 5, Devils 2

My 3 stars of the night:
1. San Jose’s top line (13 Points)… Thornton, Heatley, and Marleau feasted on New Jersey as Jumbo Joe notched a hat trick and five points.
2. Michal Neuvirth, WSH (29 Saves, Shutout)
3. Martin St. Louis, TB (2 Goals, 1 Assist)

Players to watch:
STL- David Perron
Perron recently had a pair of two-goal games. Will that get his season jump-started?
NSH- Steve Sullivan
Last time these two met, Sullivan had a pair of big goals.

Projected Goaltenders:
STL- Jaroslav Halak (2010/11 stats: 4-1-1, 1.81 GAA)
NSH- Pekka Rinne (2010/11 stats: 2-0-2, 1.58 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
After hearing about how good they are through the press all week, the Predators will get a chance to show it on the ice. Their opponent tonight, St. Louis, has flown under the radar in the mean time. The Preds have won five straight in this head-to-head series; so you can bet the Blues will be determined to get the two points. It will be a close game, but Rinne just simply has their number.

Projected Goaltenders:
LA- Jonathan Quick (2010/11 stats: 5-1-0, 1.95 GAA)
DAL- Kari Lehtonen (2010/11 stats: 5-3-0, 2.70 GAA)

Injury Report:
LA- Drew Doughty (upper body, out), Scott Parse (groin, out)
DAL- None

Game Thoughts:
It’s no revelation that the Kings are sitting atop the Pacific, but it is a bit of a surprise that the Stars have done so well in the early going. Coming off a game last night in Chicago, look for L.A. to slow the game down and try to grind out a win. Dallas has dropped two straight at home. I like the Kings to grab an ‘ugly’ two points.
Prediction: Kings 2, Stars 1

Wednesday Game of the Week

Sid’s Pens and Stamkos’ Bolts Square Off
Photobucket
When the Penguins and Lightning drop the puck tonight, it will mark a rare occasion – co-Rocket Richard winners playing against each other. Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos split last year’s award by scoring 51 goals apiece, just edging Alex Ovechkin by one goal. Stamkos has the edge early on with eight goals; Crosby has six.

Crosby made it a point to score more last season after he went on a scoring barrage in the 2009 playoffs. His goal total jumped from 33 to 51 in one year, which could be a result from shooting more (298 shots in 09/10; 238 in 08/09).

You knew Stamkos was a great talent when he was drafted. But I don’t if any of us expected he would score 51 in his sophomore season – especially after his inconsistent rookie campaign. He was an absolute machine on the power play, scoring 24 goals with the man advantage.

Now it seems as if Tampa Bay’s success is catching up to Stamkos’.

With rookie coach Guy Boucher behind the bench, the Bolts have jumped out to a nice 5-2-1 start, and are currently leading the Southeast Division. Some of that success can be attributed to Stamkos, who has also started on fire with a league-leading 15 points. But the Lightning have also excelled on special teams.

We all know how lethal the power play unit is – Stamkos, Martin St. Louis, Vinny Lecavalier, Ryan Malone, Pavel Kubina. That is some serious ammo!

However, the penalty kill has flown under the radar, killing off 89-percent of the opposition’s power plays. Dominic Moore and Nate Thompson have been solid up front, while Victor Hedman and Mike Lundin lead the way on the blueline.

That unit will have its hands full tonight against the high-flying Penguins.

Dan Bylsma’s group has played exceptionally well after a rocky start, especially given the injuries they’ve endured. Jordan Staal, Zbynek Michalek, and Brooks Orpik have all missed time here in the early going.

A pleasant surprise for this team has been Mark Letestu, who had only 10 games of NHL experience before this season. He has slid into the vacant spot left by Staal on the second line, racking up seven points in nine games.

The biggest question mark in Pittsburgh, though, is the goaltending. Backup Brent Johnson has been terrific, sporting a 4-0-1 record and 1.39 goals-against average. The uncertainty lies with Marc-Andre Fleury. He has a ghastly .859 save percentage and is a liability between the pipes nowadays.

Key Stats:
Records – PIT (5-3-1, 11 pts) … TB (5-2-1, 11 pts)
Power Play – PIT (8/49, 16.3%, 14th) … TB (10/38, 26.3%, 4th)
Penalty Kill – PIT (28/34, 82.4%, 19th) … TB (32/36, 88.9%, 5th)

Keys to the Game:
Pittsburgh… Stay out of the box
Since Tampa Bay will be missing some regulars from its lineup, Pittsburgh can’t do them any favors. The Lightning have arguably the most prolific man advantage unit in the league, while the Pens have an average penalty kill, at best.
Tampa Bay… Shoot the puck
The Bolts lead the league in shots for (36.1) and have a +8.5 shot differential. They are playing the second-ranked team in shots against. It will be important for Stamkos and company – especially if Fleury is in net – to shoot the puck and cause havoc in front.

Injuries:
Pittsburgh… Jordan Staal (foot, out), Zbynek Michalek (shoulder, doubtful)
Tampa Bay… Mattias Ohlund (knee, probable), Dominic Moore (groin, out), Simon Gagne (neck, out), Brett Clark (wrist, questionable), Matt Smaby (illness, questionable)

Final Thoughts:
I have been looking forward to this game for the last few days. It will be a nice litmus test for the upstart Lightning, despite the injuries. Pittsburgh comes in as one of the better road teams in the league (3-0-1), and will be looking to rebound after getting shutout in St. Louis. Mike Smith, who has experienced success against the Pens (1.68 GAA in six starts), will have to be lights-out. However, unless it’s a high-scoring affair, I see Pittsburgh getting the two points. The Bolts could have Clark and Smaby out, while Ohlund will be seeing his first game action of the year. Should be an exciting, fast-paced contest!
Prediction: Penguins 4, Lightning 2

RLD All-Underrated Team

Photobucket
Today we take a look at some of the more underrated players around the league. Who’s the most underrated first-line winger? Third-line center? Backup goaltender? Here’s my list… the All-Underrated Team.  Debate it all you want!

First Line:
LW- Zach Parise
If Parise was in a premier market (i.e. Montreal, Toronto) he’d be talked up as a top-five forward in the league. He has racked up 94 and 82 points, respectively, in the last two seasons with a plus-54 rating. Despite a slow start to 2010/11, Parise is still the best left wing not named Ovechkin in the NHL if you ask me.
C- Paul Stastny
Like Parise (and some of the others on this list), Stastny would be a star if playing in a bigger city. Stastny has been an assist machine ever since breaking into the league in 2006/07, and plays well in both ends. Last season he had a career-high 79 points. If the first eight games are any indication, Stastny could be setting a new high this year.
RW- Dustin Brown
The Los Angeles captain is one of those players that can glue everything together up front… he does it all. Brown scores goals, kills penalties, throws hit weight around, draws penalties, can play on any of the top three lines… and it doesn’t stop there. I think he’ll eventually turn into a consistent 30/30 player.

Second Line:
LW- Brooks Laich
Every team needs a Brooks Laich. The ninth-round pick of Ottawa in 2001 has found his stride with the Capitals on the second line. He notched 59 points a year ago and could easily put up 60 or 70 this season. Laich logs minutes in all situations… and scores in all situations.
C- Patrick Sharp
In my opinion, Sharp makes the Blackhawks go and is their x-factor up front. He has scored 10 shorthanded goals in the last four years, had a career-high 66 points in 2009/10, and is a point-per-game player here in the early going for a very affordable cap hit ($3.9M). If it weren’t for Toews and Kane, Sharp may be the face of this team.
RW- Rene Bourque
After underachieving in Chicago, Bourque has fit in quite well with the Flames. He scored 27 goals in 73 games a year ago; and so far this year, is showing signs he could top that total. He’s versatile in the fact that he can play a man up or a man down, as well as either wing. For whatever reason, Bourque gets overlooked.

Third Line:
LW- Jason Chimera
Chimera’s numbers won’t raise any eyebrows, but he does a lot of the little things that can make a difference; he is also a great skater.
C- Manny Malhotra
I don’t think Malhotra gets nearly the credit he deserves. He logs the second-most shorthanded ice-time for Vancouver, and had a plus-17 rating in San Jose last year.
RW- Joel Ward
‘Wardo’ is one of my favorite players to watch as he doesn’t take a shift off and does the things necessary to help his team win.

Fourth Line:
LW- Brandon Prust
Prust will take on anyone in a fight, but can also chip in offensively if needed.
C- Scott Nichol
I’ve always thought Nichol goes unnoticed; he wins face-offs and works his rear end off.
RW- Jannik Hansen
Hansen can be a pretty valuable bottom-six forward when healthy.

First Defensive Pairing:
Ryan Suter and Brent Seabrook
If these two weren't overshadowed by Norris-caliber defensemen in front of them, they’d get a lot more face-time. Instead, Suter and Seabrook play second fiddle on the blueline, and don’t get praised enough for their true value. Suter has logged more ice-time than Shea Weber in each of the last two years. In that same time-span, Seabrook has led Chicago in combined hits and blocked shots by a wide margin.

Second Defensive Pairing:
Keith Yandle and Mark Giordano
In his first full season in the NHL, Yandle tallied 41 points from the back end for Phoenix. He’s still somewhat of an unknown around the league. Yandle was easily the Coyotes’ best defenseman last year. Giordano had a bit of a breakout season in 2009/10. He has become a go-to defender in all situations for Calgary, picking up a career-high 30 points last year.

Third Defensive Pairing:
Roman Polak and Josh Gorges
Polak, 24, is an unheralded shutdown blueliner. He led all Blues defensemen in combined hits and blocked shots last year. Gorges quietly logs the most minutes for Montreal and was a big contributor on the back end during their Cinderella playoff run.

Goaltenders:
Starter- Tomas Vokoun
Vokoun has gone under the radar in two untraditional markets in his career (Nashville and Florida). I don’t think many people know just how good he is. Florida’s defense left him out to dry a lot in recent years, hence the average numbers. If Vokoun were playing in Boston or Philadelphia, he’d be flat-out dominant. All things considered, his career .919 save percentage as a starter is pretty solid.
Backup- Ty Conklin
Everyone’s first image of Conklin is his blunder way back in the 2006 final. However, if you look at his body of work in the last three-plus years (100 games, 53-29-10, 2.49 GAA, .917 SV%), you’ll understand how valuable he really is as a backup.

Coach:
Peter DeBoer
This may be a questionable/controversial pick as there are numerous other candidates as the most underrated coach (with a great track record, no less) – namely Barry Trotz and Lindy Ruff. But I’m going with the bench boss that gets little to no recognition down in Sunrise.

Peter DeBoer, just entering his third NHL season, was a fantastic coach in Kitchener and Plymouth of the OHL before making the jump. DeBoer doesn’t deserve any blame for his team not making the postseason in his first two years behind the bench. He is well-liked by his players and is a budding coach in this league. If you mentioned his name to an average hockey fan, he/she may not know who he is. If the Panthers were to make the playoffs in the next two or three years, DeBoer would deserve to win the Jack Adams.

8:30 ET… TV: Local Networks
2009/10 Season Series: 3-1 Blackhawks

Players to watch:
LA- Ryan Smyth
Smyth has gone without a point in three games… he’s due.
CHI- Patrick Sharp
Sharp has 21 points in 16 career games against the Kings.

Projected Goaltenders:
LA- Jonathan Bernier (2010/11 stats: 1-1-0, 2.51 GAA)
CHI- Marty Turco (2010/11 stats: 4-2-1, 2.64 GAA)

Injury Report:
LA- Drew Doughty (upper body, out), Scott Parse (groin, out)
CHI- Tomas Kopecky (upper body, questionable), Brian Campbell (knee, out)

Game Thoughts:
Three years ago, Kings/Blackhawks wouldn’t have been an attractive matchup, per se. Now, it’s a heavyweight bout between two rising teams. L.A. sits atop the Pacific with 12 points, while Chicago is in a dogfight in a deep Central Division. Without Doughty and Bernier starting, I think this will be a tough one for the Kings. I see the rested ‘Hawks coming out on top in an exciting game.
Prediction: Blackhawks 4, Kings 3

Rangers Turning It Around

Photobucket
After a sluggish start that saw the team beat the Sabres 6-3 in the opener and then lose their next three, the New York Rangers have turned it around with three straight wins to propel their record to 4-2-1.

Prior to this current streak, the team's defense was extremely porous. They allowed 16 goals in the first four games, including six to the rival Islanders.  That's not what Rangers fans are used to seeing from their team.

Beginning with last Thursday's road victory over the Maple Leafs, the team has only allowed four goals during their three-game winning streak. This is mainly due to a defense that is blocking a ton of shots and the goaltending of Martin Biron and Henrik Lundqvist.  The two have combined for a 1.33 goals-against-average during the win streak.

What is remarkable is that the team has done this without the likes of Marian Gaborik, Chris Drury and Vaclav Prospal, all out with injuries. Instead, the team has done it with contributions up and down the lineup.

Starting with the offense, the team has been getting great play from Brandon Dubinsky (4 goals and 7 points), Ryan Callahan and Sean Avery (5 assists each), Artem Anisimov and Derek Stepan (5 points each), Ruslan Fedotenko (3 points), and Alexander Frolov (2 goals and 4 points). Without Gaborik and Prospal, the Blueshirts are showing that they have some depth.

On defense, the team has been getting solid efforts from Michal Rozsival (4 assists and 6 points), Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, and Michael Del Zotto (all with 3 points). It's hard not to notice Del Zotto these days as he's usually in the top three every night in terms of time on the ice; and when he makes a mistake, he ends up making up for it.

Coming into the season, goaltending was not a concern. With Lundqvist now having a reliable backup in Biron, Lundqvist should get more rest than seasons past. Biron showed just how reliable he was against the Leafs when he made 25 saves and picked up his first win as a Ranger. On the other hand, Lundqvist showed just how great he is when he stopped 62 of 65 shots this weekend in big wins against the Bruins (3-2) and Devils (3-1).

The season is young and there is a lot of hockey left to be played. With that said, the Rangers are showing that, with solid contributions all around, they can get the job done without their bigger name players.

With games against the Thrashers, Hurricanes and Leafs this week, it'll be interesting to see if the Blueshirts can continue to play smart hockey and pick up victories.

2009/10 Season Series: 4-1-1 Canucks

Players to watch:
COL- Matt Duchene
Duchene has had an up and down sophomore season thus far.
VAN- Henrik Sedin
The defending Hart winner is tied for the league lead in assists (10).

Projected Goaltenders:
COL- Peter Budaj (2010/11 stats: 1-0-0, 3.69 GAA)

Game Thoughts:
Vancouver and Colorado enter tonight’s tied for second in the Northwest Division. The Canucks took four of the six head-to-head meetings last year. Roberto Luongo, though, has sputtered out of the gates (like almost every year). If he can improve his game tonight, I see the Canucks coming out on top in a close one.
Prediction: Canucks 4, Avalanche 3

Video: Brown cleans Miettinen's clock

Kings forward Dustin Brown received a major penalty and game misconduct for this second period hit on Antti Miettinen. The question is... does it deserve a suspension?

Power Rankings: Week 3

Photobucket
1. Pittsburgh Penguins… LW: 3
Seeing them up-close on Thursday, I can’t think of how good they’ll be when Jordan Staal and Zbynek Michalek get healthy.
2. Washington Capitals… LW: 1
The Caps were tripped up twice by Boston, but they are still considered an offensive juggernaut until proven otherwise.
3. Detroit Red Wings… LW: 4
Henrik Zetterberg has come out of the gates strong, producing 10 points in seven games.
4. Nashville Predators… LW: 7
Key contributors have been in and out of the Preds lineup thus far due to injury, yet Barry Trotz’s gang is the last of the unbeatens (in regulation) and leads the NHL in points (13).
5. Los Angeles Kings… LW: 5
L.A. may be without Drew Doughty for the foreseen future, but luckily Matt Greene returned from off-season shoulder surgery earlier than previously expected.
6. Boston Bruins… LW: 10
The top line for the B’s (Lucic-Krejci-Horton) has been sensational, combining for 22 points in six games!
7. Chicago Blackhawks… LW: 6
Last season the ‘Hawks led the league with a +9 shot differential; that number is just shy of -4 through 10 games.
8. Vancouver Canucks… LW: 2
In a scheduling quirk, the Canucks have just one game this week (Tuesday vs. Colorado).
9. Philadelphia Flyers… LW: 8
Philly doesn’t seem to be in sync yet. They have a pair of back-to-backs yet that should tell us more about this team.
10. Tampa Bay Lightning… LW: 11
Steven Stamkos is on fire, leading the league with 15 points and 8 goals. The kid is a hoss.
11. St. Louis Blues… LW: 14
After a few tough losses stringed together, the Blues had two huge wins over Chicago and Pittsburgh on Friday and Saturday.
12. San Jose Sharks… LW: 9
A Jekyll and Hyde week sees San Jose slip three spots. The loss of Evgeni Nabokov is starting to show.
13. Calgary Flames… LW: 22
The Flames have really turned it on, with Rene Bourque leading the way (six goals in last four games).
14. Montreal Canadiens… LW: 17
Is he finally starting to ‘get it’? You know who I’m referring to.
15. Colorado Avalanche… LW: 15
John-Michael Liles surprisingly leads the league in assists (10). Also, the Avs have two big divisional road games in Vancouver and Calgary this week.
16. Toronto Maple Leafs… LW: 12
Toronto has come back to earth after a 4-0 start. Can they turn it back around this week?
17. Phoenix Coyotes… LW: 16
In two home games last week, the Coyotes drew a combined attendance of 14,895. Come on, Coyotes fans.
18. Carolina Hurricanes… LW: 20
The ‘Canes made it out alive from their three-week road trip with a 4-3 record. They’ll finally play their home opener on Wednesday…
19. Dallas Stars… LW: 18
Given their record, it’s surprising to see the Stars ranked 26th on the power play and 30th on the penalty kill.
20. New York Islanders… LW: 24
P.A. Parenteau is the point-leader on a team that is currently second in their division?
21. Buffalo Sabres… LW: 23
Lindy Ruff’s club is 3-1 on the road (should be 4-0) and 0-4-1 on home-ice. Luckily, they have three road games on tap this week!
22. New York Rangers… LW: 27
In their current three-game win streak, Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Biron have combined for a 1.33 GAA and .956 save percentage.
23. Atlanta Thrashers… LW: 19
Chris Mason is on pace to play in the most games in his career, and has let in three or more goals in all but three games.
24. New Jersey Devils… LW: 13
When was the last time you saw a Devils team with a -15 goal differential?? John MacLean better turn this around quickly.
25. Columbus Blue Jackets… LW: 28
The Jackets are 4-3-0, meaning the Central is the only division with all five teams above .500 at this point.
26. Florida Panthers… LW: 26
Peter DeBoer’s crew has played pretty well in the early going, but has a key road trip north of the border this week.
27. Anaheim Ducks… LW: 25
Anaheim is surrendering an alarming 40 shots per game. Jonas Hiller won’t last much longer at this rate!
28. Ottawa Senators… LW: 21
Jason Spezza’s banged up, the goaltending is shaky, and they have no identity. It could be a tough year in Canada’s capital.
29. Minnesota Wild… LW: 30
Alright, so Todd Richards’ ‘bag skate’ worked. Next step? Consistency.
30. Edmonton Oilers… LW: 29
A quote from Tom Renney after Saturday’s loss: “We’ve had the good, the bad and ugly this season.”
