There are games like Wednesday's, when rivals Boston and Montreal drop the gloves multiple times and total 192 PIM's. Then there's crossing the line, like what some of the Islanders did last night as they tried to seek revenge on Pittsburgh, who beat them up a week ago.
There will be heavy suspensions and fines. Trevor Gillies, Matt Martin, Eric Godard and Micheal Haley should all be hearing from the league in the near future.
Here are a few videos from last night's brouhaha...
Here's the penalty box score from this game...
This is an opportunity for the NHL to lay down the law. After a couple 1970's-style brawls within just a few days, I'm sure this isn't sitting well with Gary Bettman. 346 penalty minutes were registered in this game... 346! At one point, there were a combined seven players on the bench for both sides.
What Gillies did to Tangradi was bush-league and immature. It was a direct elbow to the head, he attempted to mug Tangradi immediately thereafter, then went on to taunt Tangradi as he was visibly shaken up. Just a classless series of events from Gillies, who should get the book thrown at him in my opinion.
Godard left the bench to defend Brent Johnson, and will receive an automatic 10-game suspension. Dan Bylsma will be facing a $10,000 fine, and possibly a suspension as well.
It will be interesting to see what the league does after this. Will they send a message?
