Is writing on wall for Parise exit?

Photobucket
Zach Parise and the New Jersey Devils avoided arbitration on Friday when the restricted free agent was signed to a one-year, $6 million contract. Even before this deal, though, dating back to last summer’s re-signing of Ilya Kovalchuk, it seemed like Parise’s future in New Jersey was murky. Is the writing on the wall for Parise, a UFA-to-be in 2012, to head for greener pastures next off-season?

Will Weber sign a long-term deal?

Photobucket
The clock is ticking. Shea Weber and the Nashville Predators have until Tuesday to hammer out a long-term deal. If not, the two sides will head to arbitration, which will result in a short-term contract. Will the trend continue of teams re-signing their restricted free agents prior to arbitration? Music City certainly hopes so.

Hodgson in holding pattern

Photobucket
In June of 2008, the Vancouver Canucks selected center Cody Hodgson 10th overall in the NHL Entry Draft. One year later, he donned the cover of The Hockey News’ Future Watch magazine after a dominant season in the OHL and World Juniors. Talked up as the “most complete” prospect in hockey at that time, why hasn’t Hodgson broken through in the NHL yet?

Canucks still team to beat in West

Photobucket
Early signs suggest the Western Conference is going to be as good and competitive as ever. A couple of the top competitors have even improved this off-season. However, the road to the Cup final from the West will still go through Vancouver.

Contrasting views on Osgood’s Hall of Fame credentials

Photobucket
One of the hottest topics around the NHL since Tuesday has been the debate of whether the now-retired Chris Osgood should be in the Hall of Fame. He has 401 wins and three Stanley Cups to his credit, which would normally be enough to be a lock for the Hall. However, some feel he benefitted from being on great Detroit teams over the years.

What if Pittsburgh never won the 2005 lottery?

Photobucket
Six years ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise changed forever for the better. It was on July 22, 2005, that the then-struggling organization won a unique draft lottery that involved all 30 teams. Obviously, winning that lottery enabled the Penguins to draft a teenage phenom by the name of Sidney Crosby. You may have heard of him.

The rest has been history. Crosby has become the best player in the sport, as well as the face of the league. The Pens have made the playoffs in all but one season since Crosby arrived (his rookie season) and even won the Stanley Cup in 2009.

What if the Penguins hadn’t won that lottery, though? When Commissioner Gary Bettman opened the envelope that revealed who got the first overall pick, what if the (Mighty) Ducks logo had appeared instead?

How will Buffalo get under the cap?

Photobucket
Believe it or not, the Buffalo Sabres have the highest payroll in hockey. Yes, the same Buffalo Sabres that have been handcuffed over the years as a ‘small market team’. With Terry Pegula on board as owner, they no longer have that problem.

With this summer’s spending spree, the Sabres actually sit above the salary cap by over $2 million. That’s not taking into account the pair of restricted free agents still needed to be signed. So what will GM Darcy Regier do to get back under the cap?

New Capitals contemplate their roles

Photobucket
Over the course of the last few weeks, three of the Washington Capitals' off-season acquisitions have met with the media to talk about what they hope to bring to the team.

Stamkos contract gets done

Photobucket
As announced by the Tampa Bay Lightning, RFA Steven Stamkos has signed a new five-year deal worth $7.5 million annually. Rumor mongers can move on now.

Which Steve Mason will show up this season?

Photobucket
This is something that Columbus Blue Jackets fans are probably thinking about, considering that their franchise netminder, Steve Mason, has not been the same goaltender that won the Calder Trophy back in 2009.

There is no doubt that Mason is a young, talented and athletic netminder who has the ability to win hockey games on his own and make big saves. With that said, however, he has not done that on a consistent basis over the past two seasons.

Can ‘Predator Hockey’ win a Stanley Cup?

Photobucket
‘Predator Hockey’, as defined by Barry Trotz: Forechecking-based attack that’s in your face, a strong team defense, great goaltending and a team that will outwork you every night.

It’s a term the Predators coach uses on a nightly basis, so much so that all it’s lacking is a copyright. And for the first time since breaking into the league in 1998, ‘Predator Hockey’ made it to the second round of the playoffs. Can that style of play, preached by Trotz, get even farther and win a Stanley Cup? Or has it reached its peak?

Lightning look to build on breakout season

Photobucket
One of the bigger surprises of the 2010-11 regular and post-season, the Tampa Bay Lightning found a new attitude and became a threat again to the Eastern Conference. After falling one win short of a Cup final berth, the Bolts hope they can carry over that success to the 2011-12 campaign, and are out to prove last year was no fluke.

Ranking goaltending tandems

Photobucket
From 1 to 30, here’s a ranking of the one-two combos between the pipes for the 2011-12 NHL season.

Saturday Faceoff: Stamkos or Doughty?

Photobucket
Two substantial restricted free agents remain both unsigned and susceptible to an offer sheet: Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty. They were drafted first and second overall, respectively, in the 2008 draft and are asking for big raises this summer. Carolyn and I debate which of these superstars in the making we’d give an offer sheet to if we were an NHL general manager.

Silly spending could prove costly

Photobucket
When the NHL entered the lockout that killed the 2004-05 season, hockey fans sought a silver lining. They wanted anything to cling to that showed the NHL and NHLPA knew what they were doing, that these two powerful groups weren't just bickering children. Surely this new "cost certainty" we heard so much about would save the NHL in the long run, and make the NHL much more like the NFL with the level of competition.

Hockey fans were wrong.

A look at 2012 free agency

Photobucket
Is it too soon to see how next year’s free agency class looks? Absolutely not! Here’s an early look at some of the free agents that will be highly sought after next summer, if they’re not re-signed before then.

Depth should make Eastern Conference stronger

Photobucket
In recent seasons the Western Conference has been the NHL’s deeper, better conference. They have owned the East in head-to-head play and had won three of the last four Stanley Cups before Boston tripped up Vancouver. With this summer’s activity, the Eastern Conference has closed the gap.

Predators unveil new home jerseys

Photobucket
The Nashville Predators not only have made some changes in personnel this off-season, but they have also steadily unveiled a new design with the logo and jerseys over the last few weeks. Wednesday at the Skate of the Union event in downtown Nashville, fans got the first look at the new home jerseys.

Manitoba on my mind

As the new Winnipeg Jets (which are, of course, the old Atlanta Thrashers) hurriedly assemble their NHL roster for the 2011-12 season, I’ve been curious to see what the Canadian expertise will bring that apparently was missing when the team was located in Bettman’s Sunbelt. I read enough headlines in June to know that clearly hockey belongs in Winnipeg like moose belong in the boreal forest.

Top 5 dates to circle on 2011-12 calendar

Photobucket
Today was the day that the NHL schedule used to be released, but the league has changed that the last two years by unveiling it in June. To whet your appetite for the 2011-12 season, here are five dates (six, actually) you need to circle on your calendar.

Can Oilers follow in footsteps of Pittsburgh and Chicago?

Photobucket
The 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins and 2010 Chicago Blackhawks have one thing in common. Both went through tough times before and after the lockout, but benefitted from it by winning a Stanley Cup with a core mostly made up of high draft picks.

With back-to-back No. 1 overall picks in their possession, can the Edmonton Oilers be the next team to experience a renaissance of sorts, like Pittsburgh and Chicago?

Is Toronto ready to end playoff drought?

Photobucket
For the last handful of years, one of the laughing stocks of the NHL has been the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s been a slow rebuild process ever since Brian Burke took over as general manager. After some solid, under-the-radar off-season acquisitions, are the Leafs ready to be a playoff contender in the Eastern Conference?

Thomas’ competitiveness led to banner season

Photobucket
Tim Thomas did just about everything a goaltender could do in one season. He won the Vezina Trophy as the top goaltender in the NHL; he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP; and he won the biggest prize of them all: the Stanley Cup.

Thomas has had an adventurous career that will make for a good novel one day. At the age of 37, winning the Cup – with a shutout in Game 7, no less – was the perfect ending to one of the best goaltending seasons in NHL history.

Saturday Faceoff: Would you trade for Semin?

Photobucket
With the free agents all picked over, some teams are still looking for some offensive punch. One name that a lot of people have turned to is Alexander Semin as possible/likely trade bait. If you one of the other 29 general managers in the NHL, would you trade for Semin? Erika and I debate…

Video: New NHL 12 trailer

Here is something to whet your appetite if you are a fan of EA Sports and their NHL series. Here's a new trailer for NHL 12, which was released this week...

Top 5 risk-reward free agent signings

Photobucket
Which free agents will either flourish with their new team, or fall flat on their face? With the free agent frenzy one week passed and most of the intriguing names off the board, here are five newly signed free agents that will ultimately be ‘boom or bust’ while donning their new sweater.

How will the Caps get under the cap?

Photobucket
Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee made several key signings around the free agent frenzy, and he’s made it clear that he is looking to build a championship team. With Troy Brouwer getting his new contract signed on Wednesday, the Capitals are now about $1.8 million over the cap according to CapGeek.

With a contract for Karl Alzner yet to come, it’s obvious that the Capitals must part with one or more players before the season begins to fit under the cap. Any trades would need to be for draft picks so that they do not take any more cap room on the roster; but the question is, who goes?

Blues being underestimated in West

Photobucket
Ever since their remarkable late-season push into the playoffs in 2009, pundits and fans have been waiting for the St. Louis Blues to take the proverbial next step. It looked like they were ready to do so early last season when they came flying out of the gates with a 9-1-2 record; but things unraveled from there.

With the youngsters continuing to grow together and improve, the potential is sky-high for this Blues club.

Who will fill vacant captaincy slots?

Photobucket
Some people believe the importance of having a good captain is overplayed, but they really can be difference-makers at tough times during a season. As of today, there are eight teams without a captain. Who should those teams designate as their new captain?

Minnesota better after unusual flurry of activity

Photobucket
Minnesota Wild fans often feel left out during big NHL events. Few players in the team's short history have deserved to be in the All-Star Game, the draft has traditionally been more painful than root canal, and they have never been in the running for big name free agents on July 1st nor much for mixing things up at the trade deadline. Add it all together, and it becomes clear why the team has never sniffed the Stanley Cup Finals.

This summer is different.

Top 5 remaining free agents

Photobucket
With the frenzy passed and most of the big names picked over, here are the five best free agents left on the market.

1. Jason Arnott
Though he’s 36 and wearing down, Arnott still has some game left in him. His experience and leadership can be valued by any team looking for depth down the middle. In his short stint with the Capitals, Arnott put up seven points in 11 games but wasn’t much of a factor in the playoffs. Still, there aren’t many centers on the market; the demand out-numbers the supply.

Hurricanes make changes to defense

Photobucket
Just when it seemed the Hurricanes were set with the six defensmen under contract Friday, GM Jim Rutherford today signed UFA Tomas Kaberle to a three-year, $12.75 million contract and traded Joe Corvo to the Boston Bruins for a 4th round pick. Corvo, 33, has 1 year at $2.25million left on his contract.

Kaberle, who is also 33, recently won his first Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins where he was a trade deadline acquisition this year. He has spent the balance of his 12-year career with the Maple Leafs, where rumors of his trade had become perennial fodder for hockey writers in Toronto. He was listed by most as the highest rated UFA remaining as of today.

Has Columbus improved enough for playoff push?

Photobucket
On Feb. 27, the Columbus Blue Jackets were eight games above .500 and three points out of a playoff spot courtesy of a great month of hockey (8-2-1). After a heartbreaking loss in Nashville to close out February, the Jackets went on a tailspin and won three games the rest of the way.

It was the sign of a young team. This off-season, GM Scott Howson has been busy in trying to get his team in the playoffs for just the second time. Has his efforts been enough?

Is path cleared for Preds to lock up ‘big three’?

Photobucket
At first glance, the Nashville Predators’ trade with Toronto this weekend could be puzzling to some. With that being said, Preds general manager David Poile usually has a method to his madness. The always-crafty GM is looking big-picture as the most vital contract negotiation(s) in team history await in the next days, weeks and months.

Sharks and Wild swap forwards

Photobucket
For the second time in 10 days, the San Jose Sharks and Minnesota Wild have pulled off a blockbuster trade. Dany Heatley is heading to the State of Hockey in exchange for Martin Havlat. San Jose gets faster with this deal, but Minnesota acquires the dynamic goal-scorer they’ve lacked since Marian Gaborik was in town.
