Carter, Richards reunited for Cup run

Photobucket NEWARK -- When Mike Richards and Jeff Carter were unceremoniously traded from Philadelphia, it’s understandable to think they weren’t too happy about it. And they weren’t.

“We were pretty mad,” Richards said about the trade. “I'm not going to lie. It's something I've never had before. I've never been traded. Jeff has never been traded. For us to be traded at the same time I think there was a lot of venting to each other.”

Kings' stars come through in overtime

Photobucket
It’s official: the Los Angeles Kings cannot lose on the road.

On the strength of an overtime goal from Anze Kopitar, the Kings pushed their playoff road record to 9-0 in a 2-1 win over New Jersey in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Video: Kopitar wins Game 1 in overtime

With the game tied 1-1 heading into overtime, the Kings and Devils were each looking for a hero in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.  Anze Kopitar stepped up for the Kings, capitalizing on this breakaway opportunity to lift the Kings to a 2-1 win.  With the win, the Kings took a 1-0 series lead and pushed their playoff road record to 9-0.  Game 2 will take place Saturday night in Newark.

Photobucket NEWARK -- The Los Angeles Kings are back in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993, but it’s not the first Cup run for veteran defenseman Rob Scuderi.

Can Devils earn breaks against Kings?

"I told Adam Henrique I watched his Game 6 goal multiple times because I didn't know how he got so open. He said, 'I didn't know either.'" - Dave Lozo, NHL.com

During the broken play that eventually ended the New York Rangers' season, rookie pivot Adam Henrique found himself alone and in the middle of the crease with the puck on his blade. Even though all five Rangers collapsed below the hash-marks, the puck still made its way past all parties and into the back of the net.

Henrique, whose three postseason goals came in game-deciding tilts, has a flair for the dramatic in these playoffs. But he will be hard-pressed to score such a 'gimmie' against the battle-tested Kings.

How the Cup finalists were built

Photobucket
This spring’s version of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has been a long, winding road of unpredictability.  That road has stopped at the Stanley Cup final with a No. 6 seed meeting a No. 8 seed, the first time under the current format that a division winner is not among the final two standing.

New Jersey and Los Angeles were equally impressive in their surprising runs to the final.  Here is how each team was built over the years…

Devils needed Kovalchuk, Kings didn’t – now they meet for the Cup

Saturday Faceoff: Top destination for Luongo?

Photobucket There’s a lot of confusion surrounding Roberto Luongo nowadays.  On Thursday, Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said Luongo wanted out.  Shortly thereafter, GM Mike Gillis said Vigneault misspoke.

Rookie Henrique sends Devils to final

Photobucket Coming into tonight's Game 6 between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, everyone in the hockey world seemed to want to talk about what happened in Game 6 in 1994 between these same two teams.

The Devils would have none of that as rookie forward Adam Henrique scored 1:03 into overtime to give his team a 3-2 win in the game, a 4-2 series win and a chance to play for the Stanley Cup against the Los Angeles Kings.

Gerard Gallant looks ready to win at NHL level

As the offseason approaches, remember this name: Gerard Gallant. No, Gallant isn't another upstart coach out of junior hockey like Pete DeBoer or Guy Boucher. Instead he's a former NHL bench boss who found a head coaching job and ran with it. And by all accounts, he should be ready to take his winning ways back to North America's premiere league.

Can New York dig out of another 3-2 hole?

Devils' tireless forecheck remains the difference

Through five playoff games between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers we have a series that is as tight as it can get. In fact, there has been no goal differential whatsoever with each club scoring 12 times. The Rangers, in their two victories squeaked out 3-0 scores, while the Devils have been a bit more dominating in their wins despite the numbers not quite painting that picture. The difference between the two teams, however, remains a relentless forecheck from the Devils.

Can the Coyotes build on their success?

Heartbroken, hurting, and frankly pissed off.

If you look at the faces of this Phoenix Coyotes team, they were clearly upset by last night's outcome. This rag-tag bunch of veterans, journeymen, and a few choice young players capable of playing in such a demanding system, were all forced to pack their bags and start their offseason.

The group of players currently assembled, we can only assume, will not all stay with Phoenix next season. Do the Coyotes, as an organization, have a proper core to build around? Moreover, can that core attempt to replicate this season's success?

Rangers dealing with a case of the 'yips'

What exactly are the yips? The yips are defined as a state of nervous tension affecting an athlete (as a golfer) in the performance of a crucial action. Athletes across sports are victims to the yips, especially those who play in New York-- the bright lights, roaring crowd, and worst of all, never-ending expectations of greatness are enough to get to most athletes, regardless of their raw skillset.

In baseball, the New York Yankees constantly deal with new players with an incurable case of the yips.  Even if you don't follow the sport, you might remember former All-Star second baseman Chuck Knoblauch struggling to make a routine throw from second. Knoblauch never got over the yips and won't be the last athlete to struggle with an exorbitant amount of pressure on them.

By the same token, the New York Rangers are hoping they can get over their ailment.

Alex Ovechkin and company surprised hockey pundits by advancing to the second round.  It was an unexpected playoff run that they can draw more positives from than other recent playoff failures.

Video: Hanzal boards Brown

In tonight's Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal picked up a major boarding penalty and game misconduct for this hit on Kings captain Dustin Brown:

Hanzal doesn't have a supplementary discipline record with the NHL, but that will change in the next few days. He deliberately shoved a vulnerable Brown into the end boards on what was a needless hit. Expect Hanzal to get a call from the league tomorrow.

Hanzal became the second Coyotes player to commit a major penalty in the game; captain Shane Doan hit Kings forward Trevor Lewis from behind in the second period. Doan's hit wasn't as vicious as Hanzal's and isn't worthy of a suspension.

As for the game, the Kings continued their dominance with a 4-0 win to take a 2-0 series lead over the Coyotes. The No. 8-seeded Kings are now 7-0 on the road this postseason. Incredible.

Anatomy of Devils' 3-1 series lead on Flyers

By David Strehle

In many aspects, the 2012 Eastern Conference Semifinals series between the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils has gone just the way the experts had predicted. One team has thoroughly dominated play through hard work and a furious forechecking attack, unleashing a barrage of shots at the opposing goaltender, who has yielded goals only after making a series of saves. The other club has had the tempo of each game dictated to it from the opening faceoff of the series. Pinned in their own zone for long stretches of time, frustration has set in and the usual discipline with which they have exhibited through the playoffs has dissipated.

Zidlicky helps to solidify both ends of the ice

Back in February, when New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello acquired Marek Zidlicky from the Minnesota Wild, he knew there was potential for a high reward. Why else would he send a hefty bounty of Kurtis Foster, Nick Palmieri, Stephane Veilleux, a second round pick in 2012, and, if they defeat the Flyers, a third round selection in 2013?

Lamoriello not only saw the potential of acquiring a puck-moving defenseman to help push the play forward, he saw the value in a veteran defender who was capable of playing better than his market value.
